THE CROOKSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL HOST ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE IN OBSERVANCE OF FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

crookston-firefighters-e1649365881751704333

The Crookston Fire Department will celebrate Fire Prevention Week starting Monday, October 9. Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored a public observance of Fire Prevention Week. This is the longest-standing public health observance in the United States. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn to stay safe in fire situations. Firefighters will provide life-saving, public education and efforts to decrease casualties caused by fires.

“During Fire prevention week, we, as firefighters in Crookston, like to get into the schools and meet with each of the grades,” said Fire Fighter and Fire prevention Coordinator Brian Hansen, “We’re going to start with Pre-K this year, and we’ll go all the way up to fifth grade at Highland Elementary.”

Students at Highland Elementary will be given homework from the Fire Department consisting of checking smoke detectors within their homes with an adult’s help. The children will count how many smoke detectors they have in their homes, as well as carbon monoxide detectors, and make sure they are working correctly. “It’s funny how throughout the year, someone could take batteries out for a TV remote, and you wouldn’t even know about it,” said Hansen, “Mom and dad might be at work, kids take the batteries out and don’t tell their parents, and you can go to bed that night without having a working smoke detector which, we can’t have in our community.”

The Crookston Fire Department will be visiting three elementary schools during the week. Below, you can find the find schedule for the week-

On Monday, October 9, Fire Fighters will visit Highland Elementary School for first, second, and third graders.

Wednesday, October 11, firefighters will visit Washington Elementary School during the morning, followed by a visit to Highland Elementary in the afternoon for the fourth and fifth graders.

Thursday,  October 12, Fire Fighters will visit Washington School preschool students.

Friday, October 13, Fire Fighters will visit Our Saviors Elementary School.

The Crookston Fire Department will host its annual Open House on Saturday, October, to conclude Fire Prevention Week. This event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This year’s theme is “Cooking Safety Starts With You.”

“A lot of our focus is going to be on the cooking safety,” said Hansen, “We will have at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. a live kitchen fire demonstration, in case people in the community haven’t seen our demonstrations at Nite to Unite.” This demonstration will include a kitchen prop being placed in the parking lot of the Fire Department, and a firefighter will take the audience through what can happen when trying to put out a grease fire with water.

The open house will also include thermal imager demonstrations and an obstacle course for children. Food and drinks will also be served during the event. The menu will include hotdogs, chips, and juice for the children and families to enjoy during the Open House.

ALEXANDRIA MAN CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE TAX CRIMES

minnesota-department-of-revenue-logo-e1689266180822186939

The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced that the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office recently charged Todd Michael Klingbeil, of Alexandria, with five felony counts of failing to pay sales and use tax, three felony counts of failing to file income tax returns, one felony count filing a false or fraudulent income tax return, and four felony counts of failing to pay income tax.

According to the complaint, Mr. Klingbeil willfully failed to file his state income tax returns for tax years 2018 through 2020, filed a fraudulent income tax return in tax year 2021, and failed to pay income tax for all those tax years. Additionally, the complaint states that Mr. Klingbeil failed to collect and remit sales tax for his business, Professional Lawncare LLC, from 2018 through 2022. The complaint alleges that Mr. Klingbeil spoke with department investigators and confirmed that he did not pay his taxes. According to the complaint, Mr. Klingbeil owes over $35,000 in tax, penalty, and interest.

Each tax-related felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Although most taxpayers comply with tax laws voluntarily, the department takes enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers to ensure that tax laws are administered fairly.

Many of the department’s criminal case referrals come from public tips. There is a 24-hour tip line for anyone who suspects that a person or business is violating Minnesota tax laws. Local callers may dial 651-297-5195 or call toll-free by dialing 1-800-657-3500. Tips can also be submitted to the department by email at tax.fraud@state.mn.us. Tipsters may choose to remain anonymous.

Northland Community & Technical College and Workforce Development Solutions will continue to offer free Nursing Assistant classes to increase the number of CNAs in the local workforce. Funding provided by Minnesota’s Next Generation Nursing Assistant (NGNA) – Train. Test. Work. initiative will provide registration fees and materials to complete the 78-hour hybrid course, clinical sessions, testing, and Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry placement.

The NGNA – Train. Test. Work. course starts with orientation on October 19 at Northland’s East Grand Forks campus. Class size is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Advanced registration is required. Attendance is mandatory for all in-person class hours, self-paced online content hours, Crookston clinical sessions, and the Nursing Assistant Competency Exam. Local employer partners will also attend campus sessions to discuss immediate hiring opportunities.

To qualify, applicants must be 16 or older, eligible to work in the U.S., and pass a Minnesota DHS background study with fingerprints and health screening; these costs are included with the course. No prior experience or prerequisite education is required.

“In less than two months, you can become fully prepared for a new career as an entry-level nursing assistant at no cost to you,” said Kristianne Boroski, who administers the NGNA – Train. Test. Work. program at Northland. “A CNA career is not only rewarding but is also in high demand. Employers provide solid starting wages with shift flexibility and paths to future opportunities.”

Northland continues to support the NGNA initiative, participating in all three training rounds since December 2021. Minnesota State training programs have resulted in over 1,300 certified nursing assistants to answer staffing shortages for entry-level healthcare workers, specifically in long-term care facilities.

For more information and to enroll, visit //www.northlandcollege.edu/wds or contact Workforce Development Solutions at wds@northlandcollege.edu.

trivalleyhscfplogo2015stacked-e1657740591915395568

Tri-Valley staff will be “On the Go” in October to conduct community forums in Warren, East Grand Forks, and Ada. In the past, community forums have been held in a set location. With a desire to engage more community members and to learn more about the needs and strengths of specific communities, Tri-Valley has taken this “On the Go” approach.

Tri-Valley staff will arrive on the T.H.E. Bus, and there will be a table with program information. Residents are invited to stop and visit with staff, check out the T.H.E. Bus, and get any information they would like. The team will also be canvassing the community and stopping at local businesses to visit with owners and customers about potential and perceived needs and strengths in the community.

Tri-Valley “On the Go” Schedule:

October 10 – Warren (10 am) (Centennial Park)
(A “Meet the Bus” event will also be held with Tri-Valley Transportation staff).
October 10 – East Grand Forks (1 pm) (Hugo’s)
October 12 – Ada (10 am) (West Main Pizza)
(A community forum will be held in Crookston that will tie into the open house for the Fournet Building at a future date.)

Tri-Valley utilizes a two-year strategic planning process, including community surveys and forums. The information gathered is translated into a community needs assessment that the Tri-Valley Board uses to identify the top priority needs in the service area. Tri-Valley’s community forums focus on the service area’s markets, community needs, community strengths, and existing and potential services offered by Tri-Valley.

For more information on the community forums or how to submit feedback on needs and strengths in your community, please get in touch with Mitch Bakken at 800-584-7020 or mitch.bakken@tvoc.org.
