RIVERVIEW RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGISTS EXCEL AS “EYES OF MEDICINE”

2023-rad-techs792943

With more than 140 years of experience, RiverView’s radiologic technologists are critical members of the medical imaging team. They work alongside doctors and nurses to perform X-ray exams and other diagnostic imaging procedures, which can be vital in diagnosing certain medical conditions as well as preventing future illnesses.

November 5 through 11 is National Radiologic Technology Week. The celebration takes place each year during the week that commemorates the discovery of the x-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on Nov. 8, 1895.

“Patients are Our Passion’’ is the theme of this year’s recognition, which is fitting for RiverView’s dedicated team (with years of service at RiverView):  Becky Peterson, 28 years; Kaylee Bergquist, one year; Janeen Brule, 22 years, Kelly Halvorson, two years, Jessica Bak, 11 years, Amy Broden, 15 years, Tanya Kildal, 21 years, Logan Klipping, five months, Maggi Lund, 19 years Haley Massmann, three years Kevin Waldhausen, seven years, Alisa Leas, 11 years, and Dru Olivier, four years.

Typical daily work for these individuals includes Greeting patients and preparing them for procedures, Positioning patients and instructing them during imaging, Producing quality images and securely saving them, Working alongside physicians to interpret pictures, Educating patients about procedures,  Scheduling patient appointments, and Cleaning exams rooms and caring for imaging equipment.

“Despite the difficulties of the job—intellectual, emotional, physical—radiologic technologists love their work,’’ shared Brianna Iverson, RiverView’s Diagnostic Imaging director and radiologic technologist. “They know that it is critical, that they are essential, that patient care practically hinges on their ability to coax patients into position and manipulate machinery to get that perfectly exposed image. And they don’t ask for a lighter load or a stronger back to manage that load. What they ask for is simple: to be seen and to have their work acknowledged for the skill it requires and the importance that it holds for patient care. And that seems to us a rather fair request. They are, after all, the eyes of medicine, and without them, we would be blind.’’

Iverson also includes Leann Kawlewski, Diagnostic Imaging Patient Access representative, in the team’s celebration. “Leann has been with RiverView and Diagnostic Imaging Patient Access for years, and without her, we would be lost!’’

Thank you to our radiologic technologists for making RiverView an exceptional place to receive care.

Maria Concepción “Connie” Garcia (Lozano)

May 25, 1935 – October 30, 2023

Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Great-Great Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Friend, passed away peacefully at the Villa St. Vincent at the age of 88.

Maria, known by many as Connie or Concha, was born in Denver, Colorado. Her family moved to Mexico where her father started his own business. She moved back to the states where she moved to Minnesota to be with her sisters. Connie met Ted while she was working for his family.

Connie and Ted raised their family in St. Paul prior to moving to Crookston in 1968. They later returned to St. Paul after Ted’s retirement to be closer to their grown children and Connie’s family.

Connie lived a good life and was a devoted mom to her children Maria, Linda (David), Jose, Theodore, Marc (Terri).

She was a dedicated grandma to Melanie (Chris), Michelle (Martin), Meranda (Rick), Chad (Kelcie), Jamie (Josh), Christina (Mark), Megan (Dan), Hannah, Gabriella (Joaquin), Emillo, Marissa, Katie, Joseph, Nicole (Brad) and Josh (Amanda) and a great-grandma to (37) great-grandchildren as well as a great-great-grandma to 8 great-great grandchildren.

Connie was preceded in death by her husband Ted, her daughters Esperanza and Socorro, her parents Antonia and Ted, Sisters Juanita, Sylvestra, Estefana, brothers Salvador, Theodoro, granddaughter Emily, great granddaughter Tiffany, great grandsons William and Jordan.

Connie enjoyed spending time going to her children and grandchildren’s sporting and school events as they were growing up. She loved having family and friends gathered around the table and was sure to make everyone’s favorite dishes with her home canned tomatoes and her chile. She loved a good party and was a huge fan of bridal and baby showers, these special events gave her a reason to wear her signature red lipstick and show up with her crocheted gift or dish towels. Some of her favorite past-times were crocheting, sewing, tending to her flower gardens, going to rummage sales, thrift store shopping, repurposing furniture she found on the curb, date nights with friends, playing Loteria Bingo with family for Brach’s candy, Casino trips with friends and family. She also enjoyed spending time at the lake with family fishing and for several years they went to Pinehurst where many memories were made.

When she became a great grandma to Tiffany (Tuffy) and later William she created many wonderful memories with them during the years she spent teaching them to explore the adventures of life. She proudly continued creating these memories through each generation and firmly believed children are not only a gift but the future.

She was a devoted catholic who spent time volunteering during her years as a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She was also a member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe parish when she lived in St. Paul.

Connie was a strong, determined, stubborn, faithful, humorous, kind-hearted woman who believed you should never hold a grudge, especially when it comes to family as life is too short!

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken meets with Palestinian Authority President Abbas in West Bank

shutterstock_2284726263749683

Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Sunday during his visit to Ramallah, following stops Blinken made in Israel and Jordan.

Abbas and Blinken met twice in Jordan during the latter’s trip to the region last month after the attack. According to a senior State Department official, Blinken thought it was important to update Abbas “on a lot of the work that we have been doing in some of our meetings with the government of Israel,” saying that Blinken told Abbas “how we, in our meeting on Friday, pressed Israel to minimize civilian harm; gave him an update on our work to get humanitarian assistance into Gaza (and) get essential services restored; and (described) our conversations with Israel about implementing a humanitarian pause.”

The meeting between the two was focused on Gaza’s present situation and the situation in the West Bank, amid escalating settler violence following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. Abbas had held a similar position to that of the foreign ministers of Egypt and Jordan on the need for a ceasefire in Gaza; however, the U.S. has been calling for “humanitarian pauses” to allow increased aid to flow into the area According to a State Department readout of the roughly hourlong meeting, Blinken and Abbas “discussed efforts to restore calm and stability in the West Bank, including the need to stop extremist violence against Palestinians and hold those accountable responsible,” while Blinken “reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance and resumption of essential services in Gaza and made clear that Palestinians must not be forcibly displaced.”

Blinken had met with Israeli officials in Tel Aviv on Friday, and said he heard “a clear commitment from the government to deal with extremist violence in the West Bank, to condemn it, to take action to prevent it, to take action against those who perpetrate it … This is important, and we will be looking closely to ensure that our friends make good on that commitment.”

According to a release from the Seattle Police Department, the fatal crash happened around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Battery Street in the Belltown area when a red sedan collided with the King County Metro Bus and sent it careening off the road and into the building. Eleven passengers on the bus, including the driver, sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the collision and were in stable condition, with eight of them hospitalized. The cause of the crash is now being investigated by police, with a release stating: “A Drug Recognition Expert officer will evaluate the male driver of the sedan for any signs of impairment.”
