CROOKSTON PARK BOARD MEETS – WINTER ACTIVITY NUMBERS DOWN

parks-and-recs-picture354704

The Crookston Parks and Recreation Board met in the City Hall conference room on Monday.

WINTER ACTIVITY PARTICIPATION NUMBERS DOWN
The meeting began with updates on the winter recreation programs and the enrollment for each program. The board received updates on programs that have already started, such as youth hockey, figure skating, and wrestling, as well as other programs that will start shortly.

There are currently 327 participants in this year’s winter activities, which is down from 365 last year. “We did lose some seniors, so that affects our figure skating stuff,” said Administrative Assistant Andrea Prudhomme. “We are getting more (enrollment) with our basic class, which is nice, but the figure skating club themselves are trying to get. But overall, I think there has been a lower number of activities involved with the whole community and just the amount of kids that aren’t getting involved.”

The enrollment for each winter rec program includes-
Figure Skating – 98
Hockey – 83
Learn to Skate – 46
Mini Mites – 37
Wrestling – 24
Swimming lessons -19
Women’s Volleyball League – 9 teams

NEW HOCKEY SUPPLY VENDING MACHINE AT CSC
The board was also informed about the recently installed vending machine in the Crookston Sports Center (CSC). This Hockey Equipment Vending Machine dispenses equipment such as tape, hockey sticks, and other accessories. It also includes figure skating equipment. The machine is located upstairs in the event rink at the CSC.

THE POOL GETS SECURITY CAMERAS
Solberg notified the board about the new POS system and six new cameras being installed at the Crookston Community Pool.
The cameras were installed because of reports that some employees felt unsafe while working their respective shifts. “This will make it easier for us to make sure that everything is accounted for,” said Prudhomme. “This is all online, and it’s what we use down at city hall. We’ll be training the workers within the next week or so, and hopefully, they can start using it right away.”

Marlo Sonja Thygeson – OBIT

sonja_thygeson_feature-e1701186531427209089

Marlo Sonja Thygeson, 84, passed away peacefully at the Benedictine Living Community in Crookston, MN on Saturday, November 25, 2023.

Sonja was born in Moorhead, Minnesota, on November 6, 1939.  She was the first of 2 children born to Ellsworth Bryan (E.B.) and Pearl Stalheim.  Her brother, Daryl, later joined their tight family.

Sonja moved to Crookston after graduating from Moorhead High School to become a nurse.  She graduated as an LPN and became a pediatric nurse at Saint Francis Hospital.  She met her lifelong friends in her early nursing years.  Friends that remained in her life until her passing.

She married Thomas Thygeson on July 19, 1969 in Crookston.  The family was completed with children, Michael and Lisa.  She chose to be a stay-at-home mom, giving up her nursing career for a time while she and Tom raised their two busy kids.  She made sure she made it to all of her children’s activities.  Even in the stormy Minnesota winter weather, her and Tom were not going to miss a hockey game!  When Tom became diagnosed with cancer, she decided to go back to her nursing career and started working until her retirement at the Villa St. Vincent.  She loved being a nurse and helping others.

Sadly, Tom passed away in January of 1993.  She grieved his loss greatly but kept moving on.  She was the most supportive mother and grandmother.  She loved having her two oldest grandchildren come and spend the holidays and time in the summer with her.  She loved going to her grandchildren’s activities as she was able.  She was proud of each accomplishment all of her grandchildren made and was sure to tell EVERYONE about each and everything they achieved.  She would pop into her grandchildren’s driveway and honk the horn waiting for them to come out the door.  She was bribing them to do chores for her for a chocolate shake.

She loved to read and gossip and needed to know everything about everyone.  She was a Vikings fan and continued to watch the Vikings on TV even close to her passing.  She loved when Sydney and Molly would bring the great-grandchildren to see her.  She loved family and had many special trips her very special cousins, Ed Stalheim and Gayle Fjelstad.

Sonja is survived by her children, Michael of Kalispell, Montana and Lisa of Crookston.  Her grandchildren, Sydney Thygeson of Thief River Falls, Taylor Dutcher or Fargo, ND, Molly Brown (Brennen Solie) of East Grand Forks, MN, Zach Brown of Grand Forks, ND, and Carly Brown of Crookston.  Her sweet great-grandchildren, Ryder and Kittsyn of TRF and Drew and Blake Solie of EGF, MN.  Brothers-in-law, Mike (ElRae) Thygeson of Burnsville, MN and Tim (Judy) Thygeson of Fair Oaks, California as well and many nieces and nephews.  Her cousins Ed Stalheim of Fargo, ND and Gayle Fjelstad of Salt Lake City, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom, her parents and her brother Daryl, a sister-in-law Kathryn Simpkins, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

She will be missed so much but her family will continue to talk about her, share memories with each other and feel so blessed she was a part of their family.

Funeral Arrangements are being made with Stenshoel-Houske, services are pending until further notice.  Please check www.stenshoelhouske.com for updates.

NEW FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER OPENS IN EAST GRAND FORKS

family-resource-frc261501

Polk County Family Resource Center Grand Opening in East Grand Forks took place on Tuesday, November 14, from 3-6 pm at their new location in the Senior High Center, located at 1505 Central Avenue Northwest in East Grand Forks. The Chamber of Commerce members were present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, as well as Senator Johnson; Karla Anderson, City Finance Director; and Bryan Hackbart, Superintendent of the East Grand Forks School District. Representing Polk County Social Services were: Karen Warmack, Director; Chuck Whiting, Polk County Administrator; and Victoria Ramirez, Family Resources Coordinator.  Maureen Hams, the Tri-Valley Community Services Director, was present on behalf of Tri-Valley Opportunity Council. Tri-Valley is working in collaboration with Polk County Social Services to get Family Resource Centers established throughout Polk County. Activities during the open house included free food and educational flyers and brochures from area businesses, carnival-type games with prizes, balloon twister, Jeffrey Salveson, face painting by Polk County Social Services Staff, and several door prizes.

The East Grand Forks Family Resource Center is the second Polk County Family Resource Center to be established, as there was one started at the Library in Crookston earlier this year. The East Grand Forks School District made the East Grand Forks location possible by providing the space in the Senior High Center.  They encourage everyone to stop and check it out.  There is a play area for children and families, a parent lounge area, an area with tables for the older students or for community meetings and/or parent trainings, and last but not least, a coffee nook for parents to be able to network with others.  The space also includes two private office areas that families can visit with staff regarding their needs.

Family Resource Centers offer free services to children and families in the form of parenting support, community events, and family activities such as Play and Learns and other child development activities. These resource centers will be driven by a parent committee to inform the staff of the needs in the community so that the Centers can work to meet those needs. It is their hope that parents will find these centers a good place to network with each other and find support from both staff and other parents. Many community partners like those who were present for the Grand Opening (Riverview Clinic, The Village, Aluma, The East Grand Forks Schools, Tri-Valley, Polk County Public Health, Polk County Social Services, NDSU Extension, The Lotus Center Peer Recovery Support Services, New Hope Center for Immigrants, New American Integration Center, Area Special Education Cooperative (ASEC), Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), and Options), will have a presence at the Resource Center either through informational brochures and educational materials available at the centers and/or through a physical presence of staff available to answers questions families may have regarding their services.  Family Resource Center staff plan to assist families in accessing the services available within the community.

If you missed the Grand Opening event, please stop by and join us for our Play and Learn on November 30th from 4-5 pm. Please visit the website for more information and current calendar of events and activities: www.co.polk.mn.us/frc.

President Biden will not attend COP28 climate conference in Dubai

Image of the 2023 COP28 UAE conference in Expo City Dubai logo. COP28

The White House announced on Monday that President Joe Biden will not attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28 taking place on Friday and Saturday in Dubai. The United States will instead send climate envoy John Kerry and other top officials in Biden’s place at the conference, which includes the world leaders’ summit. Biden had participated in the last two summits. and his absence is expected to stand out among the 70,000 delegates who will be attendance. Among world leaders who have committed to the climate summit are Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

A White House spokesperson said in a statement: “Since day one, President Biden has led and delivered on the most ambitious climate agenda in history, both at home and abroad. He secured the largest climate investment ever, putting the U.S. on a path to cut climate pollution in half by 2030, protected more than 21 million acres of public lands and waters, and he continues to rally world leaders to raise their collective climate ambition.”

White House spokesman Angelo Fernández Hernández said that Biden could still appear at the conference the following week, however no additions to the president’s travel plans are planned: “although we don’t have any travel updates to share for the president at this time, the administration looks forward to a robust and productive COP28 where Special Envoy John Kerry, National Climate Adviser Ali Zaidi, and Senior Adviser John Podesta, among others, will continue to build on the administration’s historic actions to tackle the climate crisis.”

Additional hostages are released; Israel and Hamas agree to 2-day extension of cease-fire

Poster showing missing persons cases of innocent civilians kidnapped by Hamas and taken to the Gaza Strip on October 7. Berlin Germany Oct. 18^ 2023:

Qatari officials said on Monday that Hamas has released another group of hostages to the custody of the Red Cross. shortly after officials announced an agreement between the Palestinian group and Israel to extend a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip for another two days. Qatar, who has been mediating between Israel and Hamas, announced the two-day extension of the temporary cease-fire, which was initially set to last four days, ending on Monday.  Al-Ansari said in a social media post: “The State of Qatar announces that, as part of the ongoing mediation, an agreement has been reached to extend the humanitarian truce for an additional two days in the Gaza Strip.”

According to information provided by the Red Cross, Israel’s military said that 11 hostages are on their way to Israeli territory. Spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Majed Al-Ansari said the group includes 3 French citizens, 2 German citizens and 6 Argentinian citizens. In exchange, Al-Ansari said, Israel is releasing 33 Palestinians — 30 minors and 3 women — from Israeli prisons.

At a news briefing held shortly after Qatar’s announcement at the White House, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby later confirmed the extension. Kirby said Hamas had agreed to release 20 additional hostages being held in Gaza back to Israel over the next two days, and added that they are working to extend the cease-fire further than that.

Under the terms of the temporary truce deal, Hamas agreed to release at least 50 women and children kidnapped in Israel during the Oct. 7 rampage and held captive since then in Gaza. Israel, in turn, agreed to free about 150 Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons, while also honoring a cease-fire in the interim.

The original terms of the short-term deal originally called for a four-day cease-fire, however, Israel had said publicly that it would be willing to extend the pause for an additional day for every 10 additional hostages released by Hamas.
