BENEDICTINE LIVING COMMUNITY RECEIVES GRANT FOR SERVICE ELEVATOR UPDATES

benedictine-1-402x420731761-1

Benedictine Living Community-Crookston (BLC-C) received a $50,000 capital grant from the Otto Bremer Trust (OBT) to update the service elevator between the main Summit and Villa care center buildings. The Summit Assisted Living was formally the Board & Care, and previously, St. Francis Hospital constructed which was constructed in 1950.

Executive Officer Lindsey Erdman praised the partnership between BLC-C and the OBT. “The Otto Bremer Trust has made impactful investments in our Mission over the years. They have helped us fund this crucially important project of updating our service elevator, which links our buildings together, allowing people to attend activities and maintain relationships throughout the buildings and provides flow for our departments. Over the years the Otto Bremer Grant has made possible many different projects including our new call light system, many ceiling lifts, and room updates and equipment to accommodate our growing population. Every dollar helps us sustain during these very difficult days with multiple closures seen across the state.” Explains Erdman.

Cassie Rudie, Foundation Director, commented how the overall Elevator Project costs have substantially risen even during fundraising, with a current price tag of $825,000. “To be able to secure $50,000 from the Bremer Trust allowed us to move forward with Phase 1, completing the service elevator. That important elevator is used on average 266 times a day transporting food, laundry, maintenance supplies, and associates so care can be delivered 24/7. Then consider the many Summit Tenants traveling back and forth to chapel and recreational activities, and that elevator is always on the go.”

The elevator has been in service for many decades, with an average of around 100,000 ‘ups and downs’ a year. Phase 2 is currently in progress on the remaining two Summit elevators. Updates will include new mechanicals and operating panels to ensure safe and reliable elevator services for all five levels.

“Thank you to all those that have contributed so generously towards this elevator project. Your gift will make a difference for decades to come.” Summarized Rudie.

Officials say there are ‘no sign of terrorism’ in blast that killed 2 at US-Canada border

The FBI said in a statement that the deadly explosion near the New York-Canadian border has been referred to Niagara Falls police as a traffic investigation. Officials said that no explosives or any connections to terrorism were found regarding the fiery incident in which two people in the car were killed on the Rainbow Bridge (which leads into and out of Canada at Niagara Falls). The explosion occurred on one of the busiest travel days in the U.S. as people across the country hit the road for Thanksgiving.

The White House and the Department of Homeland Security closely monitored the situation, saying they were in touch with Canadian counterparts. The FBI in Buffalo NY said in a statement: “A search of the scene revealed no explosive materials, and no terrorism nexus was identified. The matter has been turned over to the Niagara Falls Police Department as a traffic investigation.”

At a news conference, New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul said that one of the people killed was from western NY, and in a statement on Thursday morning, the Niagara Falls Police Department said the identity of those involved is pending notification of relatives. A Customs and Border Protection employee suffered minor injuries and was treated at and released from a hospital, a law enforcement official said.

Niagara Falls police also thanked local business partners, including the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, for their assistance in the investigation. According to a statement from the casino, the car stopped there for “a matter of minutes shortly before the crash occurred.”

Officials have said that the vehicle involved in the incident was traveling at a high rate of speed on the U.S. side of the border when it crashed, caught fire and exploded – contrary to some early reports that it had come from Canada. Governor Hochul said she has seen video of the car, which was going at an “extraordinarily high rate of speed” before it went airborne, crashing into a median and striking a border crossing booth. She stressed at the Wednesday evening news conference that there were no indications of terrorism.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams denies accusations of sexual assault in new lawsuit

shutterstock_210891055124393

On Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a female coworker 30 years ago. According to court documents, the complaint against Adams, which was filed on Wednesday, alleges “sexual assault, battery and employment discrimination on the basis of Plaintiff’s gender and sex, retaliation, hostile work environment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.”

The suit was submitted under the New York Adult Survivors Act, a law passed last year that opened a one-year window for sexual assault claims to be filed that otherwise happened too far in the past to litigate.

The civil suit alleges the plaintiff “was sexually assaulted by Defendant Eric Adams in New York, New York in 1993 while they both worked for the City of New York.” The plaintiff is seeking a trial and at least $5 million in relief.

Mayor Adams, however, “vigorously” denies the claim, his office said, arguing he does not know the plaintiff and would never cause anyone physical harm. A City hall spokesperson said in a statement that ‘the mayor does not know who this person is. If they ever met, he doesn’t recall it. But he would never do anything to physically harm another person and vigorously denies any such claim.”

CROOKSTON PLANNING COMMISSION RECOMMENDS CASH FARM LEASE TO C&D REITMEIER INC.

planningcommission-e16873643907076770

The Crookston Planning Commission met on Tuesday in the City Hall council chambers.

The first item on the agenda was the resolution to approve a conditional use request to be awarded to A&E properties. A&E Properties is looking to provide Automobile crushing services at 2701 Highway 75 South near Valley Plains Equipment and Cenex gas station.

“This was needed because the state has imposed an additional requirement that when someone is crushing automobiles, the crusher has to inform the state that they are within the zoning permitted by the city,” said City Administrator Corky Reynolds, “This is an industrial zone, conditional use permits are allowed in there, but it must be looked at by the planning commission and make sure it is within the comprehensive plan.”

This item was recommended to be approved and will be an action item on the next city council meeting agenda on Monday, November 27.

The final item on the agenda was the approval of the Airport Cash Farm Lease resolution to be awarded to C&D Reitmeier Inc. This is a 356-acre property in which the city received bidders for a three-year lease.

C&D Reitmeier Inc. is looking to use the property for farming and crop production. This item was recommended for approval by the committee and will also be recommended to the city council during the next council meeting.
