Rep. Kevin McCarthy, ousted Speaker of the House, announces he’s leaving Congress

US House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy speaks with reporters; Washington^ DC^ Nov 15^ 2022:

Ousted Speaker of the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, announced on Wednesday he will resign from office at the end of this month. McCarthy has not gone into detail about what his next move will be after his resignation takes effect.

McCarthy, R-Calif., wrote about his resignation in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, stating: “No matter the odds, or personal cost, we did the right thing. That may seem out of fashion in Washington these days, but delivering results for the American people is still celebrated across the country. It is in this spirit that I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started. I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office. The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”

McCarthy also posted about his retirement announcement with a video on X, with the caption: “As the son of a firefighter from Bakersfield, my story is the story of America. For me, every moment came with a great deal of devotion and responsibility. Serving you in Congress and as the 55th Speaker of the House has been my greatest honor.” McCarthy cites a list of achievements that he’s proud of in the video on social media: “Today I sit here having served as your whip, leader and as the 55th speaker of the House. We kept our government operating and our troops paid while wars broke out around the world. … I have faith in this country. Now, it is time to pursue my passion in a new arena.”

McCarthy was ousted as speaker on Oct. 3, by eight Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who forced out the speaker midsession for the first time in history.

Suspect in custody after Texas shooting spree that left 6 dead, 3 injured

San Antonio police car is shown in San Antonio^ TX^ USA.

Police in Texas said that a suspect was taken into custody after 6 were killed and 3 injured in a series of homicides and shootings across two Texas communities.  Four people were killed and two police officers shot in Austin on Tuesday, and the suspect, identified on Wednesday as Shane James, was also linked to the deaths of two people near San Antonio. Authorities said that James will be charged with capital murder.

Interim Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson told reporters that the “series of violent incidents” began on Tuesday morning “and extended into the evening,” adding that her department “and other law enforcement had not determined these incidents were connected to the last incident that occurred tonight when the male suspect was taken into custody.”  James was arrested after he crashed his vehicle while speeding away from a shootout with a police officer that left them with “multiple gunshot wounds.” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a separate news conference that the deaths of two more people were being investigated in connection with the shootings in Austin, and that the suspect was linked to a residence near San Antonio where authorities found “two apparent victims,” both “believed to be in their 50s.”

José Garza of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement: “Our hearts break for the shooting victims, injured officers, their families, and our communities impacted by yesterday’s senseless and tragic gun violence.”  Garza adde that it is expected that the suspect will remain in custody pending trial.

Gov. Greg Abbott thanked law enforcement on social media, and said that “violence will never be tolerated …Texans grieve for the loved ones of the six Texans who were murdered by a hardened criminal who must never see the light of day again. The State of Texas will provide all resources necessary to impose the full weight of law on this criminal for his despicable crimes.”

Legendary TV writer and producer Norman Lear dies at age 101

Producer Norman Lear arrives for the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards on January 19^ 2019 in Beverly Hills^ CA

Television legend Norman Lear, the writer-producer who revolutionized American comedy in the early-‘70s, has died at the age of 101.

A spokesperson for the family confirmed to The New York Times that Lear died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles, with his publicist telling Variety that Lear died of natural causes. The family’s statement read in part: “Thank you for the moving outpouring of love and support in honor of our wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Norman lived a life of creativity, tenacity, and empathy. He deeply loved our country and spent a lifetime helping to preserve its founding ideals of justice and equality for all. Knowing and loving him has been the greatest of gifts. We ask for your understanding as we mourn privately in celebration of this remarkable human being.”

Lear started his career in film and television in the 1950s, with his earlier work including the TV series The Deputy and the 1967 film Divorce American Style.  It was Lear’s revolutionary series of the 1970s, “All in the Family” that became a breakout, immediate hit. The show – about a conservative, outspokenly bigoted working-class man and his Queens, NY family — addressed the serious political, cultural and social issues of the ’70s – racism, abortion, homosexuality, and the Vietnam war — with no subject off limits.  Lear also created and produced such groundbreaking series such as Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons and Good Times, which all premiered in the 1970s. In recent years, Lear produced Netflix reboots of his series One Day at a Time and Good Times.

Lear is survived by his third wife Lyn Davis, six children and four grandchildren. Lear’s publicists said that a private service for his immediate family will be held in the coming days.

SPORTS FEEVER – December 7, 2023

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

Welcome to the Feever column. Enjoy!

Here are my “Deep Thoughts” after the first week (of December) of winter sports.

Crookston Pirate Hockey is rolling right now. The Pirate Girls Hockey team just beat Warroad for the first time since 2007!  That is right, the first win since 2007. It was a solid defensive performance from Crookston and an even better performance by goalie Kambelle Freije. She made 28 saves for the shutout win and give credit to the entire team for giving up the fewest shots to Warroad, probably since 2007! The girls played a solid game in a loss to Champlain Park/Coon Rapids on Saturday. Even though it was a loss, it was a great game for the Pirates. But the positives that came away from the game and knowing they were close to Warroad was a huge mental boost.
Crookston scored a goal early in the third period against Warroad and added an open net goal late for the 2-0 win. It was a huge win for the girls, and they deserve to celebrate it. The girls have taken some lumps against Warroad over the years, but their continued hard work and determination is what makes this win so sweet. The girls and coaching staff should be proud and continue.
With that said, it is a regular season game, and I know the girls will keep working hard and continue to improve as they have through the first handful of games. The improvement from game one to Tuesday has been impressive, and I look forward to seeing what these young ladies do over the next couple of months.

The Pirate Boys Hockey team has started the season with two big Section 8A victories! They beat Kittson County Central 5-1 and outlasted Red Lake Falls 7-5. Crookston is much improved and has shown that anybody on the ice can score, with five different players scoring in the first game and seven different players scoring in the second game. That is impressive and shows that they are a solid team with many weapons.  The game against Red Lake Falls was fun to watch as it was fast-paced hockey. I always say you win with seniors, especially in boys sports, and Crookston has a solid group that has continued to get taller, bigger, and faster and a tight-knit group.
In all honesty, Crookston should be 4-0 going into the big game on December 15 at Detroit Lakes. We will get to see where the Pirates are with the fourth-best team in the section (behind the big three of East Grand Forks, Warroad, and Thief River Falls).
The boys play at home Thursday against International Falls (Coach Hardy’s alma mater), and on Friday, they host St. Paul Johnson in the battle for the Lions Cup!
I would like to mention some players, but I have to go with all the seniors because they are the leaders and have been getting it down as a collective group!

— — —

The Pirate Boys Basketball team already has three games in and has given up an average of 85 points per game against Warren-Alvarado-Oslo, Pelican Rapids, and East Grand Forks. I am not a defensive specialist, but giving up that many points per game will not bode well in the wins and losses column. The one thing about defense is it comes down to effort, determination, being in shape (because defense is hard work), and anticipating (basketball knowledge). Crookston has turned the ball over a lot (over 20 turnovers in the last two games), and that has led to easy points for the other team. The boys will have to figure out how to stop penetration into the lane and take care of the ball to cut the points given up per game.
Hunter Nicholas has been a force inside and has scored just shy of 30 points in two of the three games and has grabbed well over 40 rebounds in the games. He is averaging a double-double, but they need to find somebody else that will help on the offensive end. The big guy can’t do it all!

The Pirate Girls basketball team has battled well without Halle Winjum. They picked up their first win of the season against Red Lake Falls on Tuesday and had a two-point loss to Grafton. They had a close game with Thief River Falls until they pulled away in the second half, but saw good things in all three games to build on. Naomi Johnson has been solid the last two games, Chloe Boll has been solid, and I really like Katelyn Christensen and the way she plays. She has shown solid improvement, and it is great to see her having a solid start to the season!

— — —

The Pirate Wrestling team is 2-5 in duals on the year and has had a handful of open weights in all seven of those matches. They graduated a great group of kids last year but have two outstanding wrestlers, Carter Coauette and Gavyn Hlucny. Both are ranked in the state, and they are 5-0 so far this season. As the season goes along, the Pirates will add some more pieces to the lineup, and that will make them more competitive in the duals.

They will have their first individual tournament of the season when they host the Rod Olson Invitational tournament at the Crookston High School gymnasium on Saturday.

— — —

Congratulations to Fertile-Beltrami Boys Basketball Coach Neil Steffes on getting the 500th win of his career this week. I am sure the veteran coach will say it’s because of the great players he has coached, but at the same time, he is a helluva coach and he is the reason his teams have been so good over the years.

— — —

The first wrestling matches of the season took place over the weekend, and a lot of milestones were reached. I have ones from Section 8A and 8AA listed below-
Zach Thompson (Foston/Bagley) 100th career victory
Chance Abraham (Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus) 100th career victory
Griffin Lundeen (TRF) 219th win and 129th pin, both school records.

JOKES

Children were called upon a classroom to make sentences with words chosen by the teacher. The teacher smiled when Jack, a slow learner, raised his hand to participate during the challenge of making a sentence with the words “Defeat,” “Defense,” “Deduct,” and “Detail.”

Jack stood thinking for a while, all eyes focused on him while his classmates awaited his reply. Smiling, he then proudly shouted out, “Defeat of deduct went over defense before detail.”

A tired U.S. Army veteran is looking for a seat on a busy British train. He can’t find a seat so he walks up to a British lady and asks “ma’am, may I use your seat?”.

The British lady responded with “Can’t you see my puppy is sitting here? How rude are you, Americans are.” .

The veteran walks off and tries to find another seat after a couple of minutes of searching, he walks back up to the lady and says, “Please, ma’am, may I have your seat. I am very tired.” .

The woman says, “How inconsiderate of you to ask me again.” the man then calmly walks up and throws the dog out of the train window, and sits down. The woman starts screaming and demanding that the man be punished, her husband walks up and says, “You Americans are doing everything wrong. You drive on the wrong side of the road, you use the wrong utensils to eat, and now you’ve thrown the wrong bit** out of the window.”

Three guys die together in an accident and go to heaven. When they get there, St. Peter says, “We only have one rule here in heaven: Don’t step on the ducks!”

So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, the first guy accidentally steps on one.

Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest woman he has ever seen. St. Peter chains them together and says, “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to the ugly woman!”

The next day, the second guy steps accidentally on a duck, and along comes St. Peter, who doesn’t miss a thing, and with him is another extemely ugly woman. He chains them together with the same admonishment as for the first guy.

The third guy has observed all this and not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly woman, is very, VERY careful where he steps. He manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St. Peter comes up to him with the most gorgeous woman he has ever laid eyes on: a very tall, tan, curvaceous, sexy blonde. St. Peter chains them together without saying a word.

The guy remarks, “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?”

She says, “I don’t know about you, but I stepped on a duck!”

Taylor Swift is named Time Magazine’s 2023 Person of the Year

Taylor Swift at the iHeart Radio Music Awards 2019 on March 14^ 2019 in Los Angeles^ CA

TIME Magazine announced that they have named Taylor Swift their ‘2023 Person of the Year,’ beating out a host of finalists (including Barbie and King Charles III) who over the last 12 months dominated in politics and entertainment

TIME called Swit a person with “singular influence” who has found a way to “transcend borders” and be “a source of light” in the world. TIME said in its profile on Swift: “While her popularity has grown across the decades, this is the year that Swift, 33, achieved a kind of nuclear fusion: shooting art and commerce together to release an energy of historic force.”  The publication added that Swift was selected because she found a way to give people around the world hope in such dark times:  “No one else on the planet today can move so many people so well. Achieving this feat is something we often chalk up to the alignments of planets and fates, but giving too much credit to the stars ignores her skill and her power.”

Swift revealed to TIME: “This is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt, and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been. Ultimately, we can convolute it all we want, or try to overcomplicate it, but there’s only one question … Are you not entertained?”

Part of Swift’s incredible achievements across 2023 was her “Eras Tour,” which grossed about $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales alone. She has dominated not only arenas, but local movie theaters as well with her concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which raked in about $96 million in the box office in the United States and Canada, making it the highest-grossing concert film domestically for an opening weekend. The singer/songwriter also has more No. 1 albums than any other woman in history, including three this year; and she broke her own Spotify record by becoming the most-streamed artist in a single day in the streamer’s history, with “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” becoming Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day this year.

name-a-snow-plow265926

Back by popular demand, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is once again inviting the public to help name another round of eight snowplows – one for each MnDOT district.

Submit the most witty, unique and Minnesota- or winter-themed snowplow name ideas.

Submissions will be accepted through Friday, December 15, at noon.

This year’s contest includes a few basic rules:
Each person may only submit one name.
Submissions are limited to no more than 30 characters (including letters and spaces).
Gosh darn it, nothing vulgar, please. Any submissions that include profanity or other inappropriate language will not be considered.
Politically inspired names (including phrases, slogans or plays on politicians’ names) will not be considered. Naming snowplows is meant to be fun and lighthearted, so we’re going to keep this contest nonpartisan and nonpolitical.
Past winners will also not be considered.
MnDOT staff will review all the submissions, select some of the best ideas, and invite the public to vote on their favorites in January 2024.

GOLDEN LINK SENIOR CENTER HOSTING EVOLUTION OF SUGAR BEETS SEMINAR

model-car690660

The Evolution of Sugar Beets in the Red River Valley will be on Wednesday, December 13, at the Golden Link Senior Center in Crookston. Cliff Nelson, retired Maintenance Superintendent at American Crystal Sugar, is organizing the event and will feature several speakers talking about farming methods used then and now, how sugar was marketed, and the history of the factories and processing.

Cliff Nelson described how he came up with the idea of hosting the event. “It kind of started some time ago; I was talking to young farmers. A lot of them have heard about how beats used to be harvested,” says Nelson. “So, it kind of came to me that I grew up on a beet farm north of East Grand Forks (and) quite a number of years ago. So I kind of know a lot of the history of the sugar beats. So I thought: ‘Why not put on a little seminar explaining the sugar beets and how it came to the valley?’”

Nelson’s portion of the event will be about what goes on in the sugar beet factories and when they were built in the valley. Nelson says what he hopes the community will get out of the event. “I’m hoping that they’ll see how important sugar beets are here in the valley,” Nelson said. “And also, I’m a collector, so I’ve got a few old models of antique tractors. I’m also a collector of model steam engines, so I’m going to bring some of them down, and we’ll have a display case down here. So hopefully, the old-timers will bring back some good memories, and the new people will learn something.”

Allen Dragseth is the president of the Sugar Beet Museum in Crookston. He’s been running the museum for 20 years since he bought the old Crookston Implement Building. Dragseth now collects vintage equipment that was involved in sugar beet harvesting and displays it at the museum. “We got harvesters from back in the (1930s) and (1940s), and we’ve got modern equipment for people to see how the beet industry has grown over the years and modernized,” said Dragseth. “It’s probably one of the modern agricultural commodities that’s grown. It’s what’s happened over the years: the way harvesting has changed and how we’ve grown.”

Dragseth will be talking about the early beet harvest and the growing of sugar beets in the early days. “It’s one of the biggest industries in town, and it gets to be pretty wild here in the fall during our harvest time,” Dragseth said. “This past fall, my wife and I came back from Fargo after dark, and boy, if you don’t know what the heck is happening in town with all the trucks and the lights on and everything, it’s kind of scary when as you first drive into town. I’m sure a lot of people have experienced that. It’s not known (by a lot of people) really how sugar is made out of the beets. We’re hoping to show them how that is.”

Scott Knutson, Board of Directors at American Crystal Sugar, will also be there, and he will talk about how the sugar is marketed.

The Golden Link Senior Center is hosting the event. This is the first time this event is being hosted. Director of the Golden Link Jennifer Erdmann hopes this will be a yearly event. “This was all brought on by Cliff Nelson, our member who is retired from American Crystal Sugar, and he said: ‘This would be great for us to speak on the evolution of sugar beets in this Red River Valley and then to have Allen and Scott with them and all the displays,” Erdmann said. “So, hopefully, we can continue this every year.”

The event is free, and all are welcome to come.
