The Crookston Pirates won a great come-from-behind win over Rosemount yesterday afternoon, 2-1, at the Hockey Town Girl’s Hockey Holiday Classic at the Gardens in Warroad. PIRATE BOYS HOCKEY BEATS LAKE OF THE WOODS FOR BIG SECTION VICTORY

The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team had three different players score, and Parker Kelly came up with some big-time saves late in the game as they beat the Lake of the Woods Bears 3-2 in a big Section 8A matchup on the final day of the Ralph Englestad Arena Holiday classic in Thief River Falls.

FIRST PERIOD
Crookston carried the momentum from the Bismarck victory on Wednesday as they started the game strong and were buzzing from the opening drop of the puck. The Pirates were putting pressure on Lake of the Woods (LOW), and at 3:21 into the game, Kadin Edwards got a pass from Riley Benson and snuck a shot by the Bear’s goalie to give Crookston a 1-0 lead.
Crookston controlled play for the rest of the period, partially because of two LOW penalties. It looked like the Pirates were going to go into the first intermission with a one-goal lead, but that changed with less than a minute left. LOW had a two-on-one and got a shot on goal before finding the rebound to slap it into the goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 38 seconds left in the period.
Crookston outshot the Bears 14-9 in the period.

SECOND PERIOD
The play was even for the first half of the second period, while neither team had a top-notch scoring opportunity. That changed less than 10 minutes into the period when Tate Hamer skated along the far boards, rifled a wrist shot from the top of the circle, and blew it by the Bears goalie to give Crookston a 2-1 lead.
The teams continued their even play, and with less than four minutes left in the period, LOW was shorthanded and got the puck behind the Pirate net and tried to stuff a shot in from the side of the net, but Crookston goalie Parker Kelly made the save to retain a 2-1 lead. LOW was at even strength and continued to put pressure on the Pirate defense the rest of the period but never got a quality scoring chance. Crookston had one last quality shot with 12 seconds left in the period as Carter Trudeau skated in between the circles and fired a wrist shot on goal, but the Bear goalie made a glove save as Crookston took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
The defense was stingier for both teams as Crookston had six shots on goal, and LOW had three.

THIRD PERIOD
The Pirates didn’t have a great start, as they picked up a penalty 19 seconds into the third period. In the first 15 seconds, LOW had a shot on goal, and it deflected off Kelly’s facemask to make the save.
Crookston put pressure on after getting back to full strength as Lucas Miller skated behind the LOW net and snuck a shot in the net to give the Pirates a big 3-1 lead with 13:17 left in the game. Over two minutes later, Crookston got a shot on goal, and there were three Pirates surrounding the net, and a shot was saved by the Bear goalie.
Crookston had a three-on-two and Edwards skated the puck up the ice along the far boards and saw Fischer breaking down the middle of the ice and slid a pass over. Fischer put a shot on goal, but the Bear goalie made a huge save to keep the Pirate lead at 3-1.
Lake of the Woods got within a goal with 6:05 remaining in the game as the Bears Dax Laplante stuffed a shot in to get within a 3-2 deficit.  With 2:30 left in the period, the Bears called a timeout to go over the plan of attack in the final minutes. They pulled the goalie with two minutes left. LOW had a shot on goal with 1:20 left, but the Pirate defensemen were able to keep the front of the net clear, and Kelly made the save. The final minute was a mad scramble, and Fischer had a shot at the open net but missed the net by a large margin before LOW hustled up the ice and got a shot on goal with 12 seconds remaining, but Kelly made another save. Crookston held on in the final seconds to secure a 3-2 victory.

Crookston improves to 6-3 on the year and 3-2 in Section 8A play. Lake of the Woods drops to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in Section 8A play.

RIVERVIEW HEALTH INTRODUCES NEW DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING DIRECTOR BRIANNA IVERSON

Brianna Iverson is RiverView Health’s new Diagnostic Imaging director. However, if you’ve been a RiverView patient or team member for the last decade or so, she may not be new to you.

The East Grand Forks native did two rotations in the department as a radiologic technology student from 2011 to 2013 while attending Northland Community and Technical College, East Grand Forks.

After graduating from the program in 2013 with her Associate’s Degree in Applied Health, Iverson worked at Altru Health System for four years before taking a position with Sanford Health in Mayville, ND, where she was excited to learn other modalities such as CT (computed tomography) and DEXA (bone density scan). After five and a half years, she accepted the position of radiology supervisor at the Mayville clinic. Iverson made her return to RiverView and began as director on Sept. 18.

“I always knew I was going to stay close to home as all my family still lives in this area, so RiverView was always an option,” she shared. The Green Wave fan and her husband, Kevin, live in East Grand Forks with their boys, Benson and Dax.
Iverson’s leadership roles progressed as her education progressed. She graduated from the University of Minnesota-Crookston in 2021 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Health – Healthcare Management and Leadership. In January 2024, she will begin her trek toward a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Mary, with a projected graduation date of May 2025.

“I love healthcare and being hands-on with patients. However, after working in healthcare for about nine years, I quickly learned the importance of leadership and management and the massive impact they can have on a department and an organization. I wanted to be a part of that.”

Back at RiverView, Iverson was welcomed by some of the employees she trained under in her student days, including Janeen Brule (R) (M), who was her clinical advisor.

“RiverView has great longevity,” she stated regarding team members. “I believe the transition has gone great. The whole department welcomed me with open arms, and I felt very comfortable. This team really helps make my job easy. They have been great resources as they have been with RiverView for years. I like to call them ‘a well-oiled machine’.”

Northland students continue to rotate through the department, something Iverson said she enjoys. She credits RiverView with being a great training ground because students are offered cross-training.

“Our department is robust. We offer so many different radiology services that many other hospitals and clinics our size in this area do not offer. I think RiverView definitely holds up its wonderful reputation. Working in healthcare, you always hear of ‘good’ places to work and ‘not so good’ places to work. RiverView has always had a great reputation, and I can honestly say it holds up. The new hospital is stunning and such a wonderful environment for not only the patients but also the staff.

“It has been a joy,” she said of her return. “I have a lot to learn still, but I feel very welcomed and I have such an amazing team.”

Brianna Iverson

Special counsel Smith says Donald Trump should be barred from blaming others for Jan. 6 riot

Donald Trump at Washington DC^ USA Jan 6 2021: Riots in DC

Special counsel Jack Smith wrote in a court filing on Wednesday that Donald Trump shouldn’t be allowed to make “irrelevant” claims targeting President Joe Biden or say others are to blame for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot during his federal election interference trial.

The filing states: “Through public statements, filings and argument in hearings before the court, the defense has attempted to inject into this case partisan political attacks and irrelevant and prejudicial issues that have no place in a jury trial. Although the court can recognize these efforts for what they are and disregard them, the jury — if subjected to them — may not. The court should not permit the defendant to turn the courtroom into a forum in which he propagates irrelevant disinformation, and should reject his attempt to inject politics into this proceeding.”

Smith’s team argues in the filing that Trump should be barred from using “terminology such as the ‘Injustice Department,’ ‘Biden Indictment’ or similar phrases” in front of the jury. The special counsel argues that Trump has suggested “he intends to impeach the integrity of the investigation by raising wholly false claims such as the government’s nonexistent ‘coordination with the Biden administration’ and other empty allegations recycled from the selective and vindictive prosecution motion that he based on anonymous sources in newspaper articles.”

In August, Trump pleaded not guilty to the special counsel’s criminal charges attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The former president has denied all wrongdoing and denounced the charges as “a persecution of a political opponent.” Trump also responded to the filing in a statement Wednesday, claiming the prosecution is ignoring Judge Chutkan’s instructions to stay the election subversion case:  “[I]t is so sad that the Supreme Court just unanimously rejected his desperate attempt to rush this Witch Hunt, that he is ignoring the law and clear instructions from District Court Judge Chutkan, who unequivocally stated that this ‘case’ is stayed and there should be no litigation.”

Michigan Supreme Court rejects case to remove Donald Trump from 2024 ballot

State of Michigan seal on the Michigan Hall of Justice Building; Lansing MI - May 6^ 2023

On Wednesday, the Michigan Supreme Court rejected an effort to remove former President Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot in 2024.  The order says the court declines to hear a case arguing that Trump should be left off of the state’s ballot because it is “not persuaded that the questions presented should be reviewed by this court.” The court’s order blocks efforts to remove Trump from the 2024 ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

The order comes after the Michigan Court of Appeals this month similarly rejected challenges to Trump’s spot on the state’s primary ballot. In a 3-0 opinion that cited Michigan law, the appellate court said: “Who to place on the primary ballot is determined by the political parties and the individual candidates.” Courts in Arizona and Minnesota have also ruled against similar efforts to get Trump kicked off the ballot.

The Michigan Supreme Court’s order is in stark contrast with the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision last week barring Trump’s candidacy in the state’s primary next year on constitutional grounds. Trump himself applauded the Michigan Supreme Court’s order in a post on his ‘Truth Social’ platform Wednesday morning, saying that the court has “strongly and rightfully denied the Desperate Democrat attempt to take the leading Candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election, me, off the ballot in the Great State of Michigan. This pathetic gambit to rig the Election has failed all across the Country, including in States that have historically leaned heavily toward the Democrats. Colorado is the only State to have fallen prey to the scheme.”

SPORTS FEEVER – December 28, 2023

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  This week’s column is the annual A to Z list. I hope 2024 is your best year ever and thanks for making 2023 a fantastic year.

Enjoy the list.

— — —

Now it is time for the 2023 A to Z New Years list. I have used a few suggestions that I received over the past week. It is a tough list to make, and we miss several people that should. We try to highlight people who have had important impacts on KROX, Crookston, and area athletics. Here is this year’s list –

A – Alex Gullingsrud –  He makes the list for the third year in a row. Alex is the son of Nicki (Philion) and Mike Gullingsrud.  Nicki is the head Red Lake Falls volleyball coach, and Mike is a longtime official for area high school and college athletics. Alex is a true warrior, and what he has done since losing his leg to cancer is a true inspirational story. 2023 has been a memorable year for the 10-year-old. He was named the 2023 USA Hockey Disabled Athlete of the Year and was recently honored at the Minnesota Wild Cancer Night game. The kid is somebody everybody can look to for inspiration!

Advertisers – The lifeblood of all media. We thank all the advertisers on KROX Radio and KROXAM.com. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. We thank all the advertisers, and the best way for you to thank them is to patronize their businesses or tell them thank you for sponsoring KROX programming!

B – Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gator Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball teams – What in the world is in the water in Badger/Greenbush-Middle River? In the last calendar year they have gone to state in Girls Basketball, Softball, and this fall, they went in Volleyball!  Three for three!!  It starts off with fantastic athletes who are driven and willing to do what it takes to be the best they can be. They have outstanding coaches for all three teams. What they have done might not have been done in a calendar year before by an area school. What BGMR has done is fantastic and congratulations on a year to remember.

C – Crookston Pirate Booster Club and Crookston Fine Arts Booster Club – The two clubs raise money each year to give to the Crookston Pirate athletic teams and the Crookston School District music, arts, and drama departments. The financial impact is well over $40,000 each year and that helps every activity in the Crookston School District, thanks to the many people that donate to one or both of the clubs.

Crookston Baseball Association – There hasn’t been an organization that has done more for their sport than the Crookston Baseball Association over the last five to 10 years. They have helped with facilities at the UMC Baseball field and added scholarships. They have made upgrades to Jim Karn Baseball Field, the highland complex, and at some point in the hopefully near future would like to do a grandstand at Jim Karn Field.  So when you are out at Crookston establishments, make sure you play some pulltabs or electronic pulltabs because the proceeds go to the Baseball Association.

CYBA and Crookston Blue Line Club – for their promotion of youth basketball and hockey while trying to keep it as affordable as possible and giving the kids as many opportunities to play the two great sports.

D – Doctors – Dr. Steve and Lucas Biermaier from Biermaier Chiropractic; and Dr. Collin Fennel, Dr. Erik Kanten, and a few others from RiverView Health volunteer their time and services at Crookston Pirate sporting events. How many high school football teams have an orthopedic surgeon and two chiropractors at home football games? You see Dr. Erik Kanten and Steve Biermaier on the boy’s and girls’ hockey benches is reassuring to parents. The doctors listed give their time, services, and overwhelming peace of mind to the kids, parents, and coaches.

E – Eric Schmidt – Eric’s first job after graduating from the University of North Dakota was at Crookston High School as a teacher and Head Football and Girls basketball coach. Eric is currently coaching for the University of Washington Huskies Football team that will compete in the NCAA Football semi-finals on January 1 against Texas. The winner advances to the championship game.  Eric is the Special Teams and Edge Rushing coach and will coach with the Huskies for one or two more games before leaving for a new job. He has been hired at San Diego State as the Defensive Coordinator for the Aztecs. Not only is he a great guy, he is an outstanding coach. We wish best of luck to Schmidty in the playoffs and on the new venture with the Aztecs after that!

F – Fertile-Beltrami Falcon Football – Coach Brian Nelson, his staff, and of course, the players of Fertile-Beltrami have made it to three straight State Football playoffs and have also made it to three straight state semi-final games!!! The Falcons had only two seniors this year, and there was some question on how good (pretty good or really good) they would be coming into this season, but that was answered in the first game of the year when they dominated Border West and never looked back the rest of the season. The seniors are fantastic players, with Derek Sorenson and Caden Swenby. They will be impossible to replace, but next year looks to be the best year yet for Falcon football!

Fosston Greyhound Baseball – The Fosston Greyhound Baseball program has been one of the best in the state year in and year out. This past spring, the Greyhounds won the state championship under one of the best coaches in the business, Ryan Hanlon.
They upset Sacred Heart in the Section 8A championship, twice! They beat Legacy Christian 11-1 in the first round of state. Beat Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 7-5 in the semi-finals and beat Lyle-Pecelli 3-2 in the state championship. To win a state baseball championship is something that is extremely rare for teams in Northwest Minnesota, but they did it with great hitting, pitching, and defense. Congratulations to Fosston on the amazing run and representing Section 8 in the best way possible.

Frank Fee – He still helps KROX once in a while. He is a member of the Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame and was the one to start KROXAM.com and create the monster it has become. He covered high school sports for over 40 years and served on the Region 8A committee as a school board member, he was a long-time Section 8A Boys Hockey statistician when hockey had one class and has broadcast thousands and thousands of high school sporting events and hundreds and hundreds of state tournament games. He taught me the importance of hard work and doing things the right way.

G – Girls Hockey – Pirate Girls Hockey – The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey program is off to an 11-3-1 start this season, including a 2-0 victory over Warroad. It was the first victory over Warroad in 17 years!!! They have a solid and deep team, and it seems like they continue to get better each week. The sky is the limit for the girls, but the road continues to go through Warroad, and they are still the team to beat in February.

H – Halle Winjum – The senior three-sport athlete tore her ACL in a basketball camp this summer and had to miss playing for the Crookston Pirate Tennis team and their trip to the state. She is also missing her senior year of basketball. Halle has committed to play basketball next year at the University of Minnesota Crookston and we can’t wait to see her play again in her hometown.  She is not only a tremendous athlete, but she is a better teammate and person.  It doesn’t get much better than Halle!

I – Iowa Hawkeye Women’s Basketball player Caitlin Clark – The 6’0 senior guard has captivated fans all over the country with her exciting play and has sold out almost every game she has played in. Clark is the only player in Division One men’s or women’s basketball history with 3,000+ points, 750+ rebounds, and 750+ assists.

J – Jokes –

What does a Bulls fan do after they see their team win?
Rewind the VHS tape.

I asked my trainer at the gym if I could start shadow boxing.
He said, “Knock yourself out!”

What is the most depressing thing about tennis?
You’ll never be as good as a wall.

Swimming is a confusing sport, because sometimes you do it for fun, and other times you do it to not die.

What does an athlete do once he loses his sight?
Become a referee.

What is the hardest thing about skateboarding?
Concrete.

What’s the difference between a ball hog and time?
Time passes.

Soccer is surprisingly relevant to my life.
I have a hard time scoring.

What does a Timberwolves fan do after they win the finals?
Turn off his Playstation and go to bed.

K – KROX Staff – The KROX staff keeps things moving. It is a typical small business where we all do more than one job, partially because of the website. I have the best staff working at KROX. I am lucky to have dependable, hard-working employees who truly care about KROX and our listeners and are doing the best we can do each day. I thank them and without them, we have nothing.

L – Listeners and Website visitors – Without the listeners and website visitors, we wouldn’t be able to continue to do what we do. Your continued support of all of KROX’s coverage is appreciated, and we’re looking forward to providing another full year of Crookston and Northwest Minnesota sports coverage in 2024.

M – Miller (Emma Miller) – Emma Miller, the Sophomore guard on the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team. She was just named the NSIC player of the week last week. She is averaging just shy of 20 points per game and leading her team to a 7-5 overall record and 4-2 in the NSIC.

N – Neil Steffes – Neil Steffes makes the list this year after earning the 500 coaching victory of his boy’s basketball coaching career. Neil has been a coach for almost 30 years at Fertile-Beltrami and always has his team ready to play each game and each season. 500 wins already is an impressive feat, and he will likely earn many more this year for sure. Neil isn’t only a great basketball coach, but he is an assistant coach of the Fertile-Beltrami Falcon Football team that has gone to state three years in a row and has been a power in northwest Minnesota forever. Neil is also a track coach and has been a big part of a lot of the Falcon’s success, especially in the pole vault. He is a great coach and a great guy, and hats off to a coach that I actually played against!!!

O – Officials – No matter how good, or bad, they might be, they are an important part of high school, college, and pro athletics. Without them, we have call your own….which we all know would get ugly. We thank them for their commitment to athletics and the willingness to take the yelling and screaming of fans and coaches to make sure we can watch our favorite sports!. Thank all officials for their hard work and dedication to keeping sports going!

P – Philion, Steve Philion – Steve Philion is in his 50th year of coaching basketball, and his Red Lake County Rebels have started the season with a 7-0 record after beating Cass Lake-Bena and Sacred Heart last week. This might be one of Coach Philion’s best teams and could also be one of the youngest teams he has had. Steve makes this year’s list because of their 50th year of coaching, along with many years of officiating football, baseball, and softball. Not only is he a great coach and solid official, but he is one of the best people you will meet. He also does a lot of volunteer work for the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, has the Lace Em Up Basketball camp, and does a lot of things around the Red Lake Falls community. He is a member of the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and has well over 600 career wins. Hats off to Steve!!

Q – Quotes –

All hockey players are bilingual. They know English and profanity – Gordie Howe

Most football players are temperamental. That’s 90 percent temper and 10 percent mental – Doug Plank

“I’ve seen George Foreman shadow boxing and the shadow won.”—Muhammad Ali

The game was closer than the score indicated.”—Baseball player Dizzy Dean, after a 1-0 game

I dunno.  I never smoked any Astroturf.”—Pitcher Tug McGraw, asked whether he preferred grass or Astroturf.

We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors.”—Basketball player Weldon Drew

“Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row.” — Vitas Gerulaitis, upon beating Jimmy Connors after 16 consecutive losses to him

“When you’re rich, you don’t write checks. Straight cash, homie.” — Randy Moss

R – Rick Niemela – The Crookston School District Transportation Director has been a magician every year.   The Pirate sports teams have been able to get busses for every trip without any problems (that we know of), and they have started all the games on time this year.

S – Sacred Heart Baseball and Basketball – The Sacred Heart Boys Basketball team has won back-to-back Section 8A championships. They are led by Destry Sterkel and he has created a monster and a power in northwest Minnesota. They are 6-1 this year and have great guards, shooters, and post players. They have the complete package and are one of the favorites again to win the section this year.
The Sacred Heart Baseball team has won the Section 8A championship three times in the past five years and just missed last year. The Eagles have things going with the two programs, and both teams should have another great winter and spring.

T – Tiffany Fee – My wife, the better half. She is like a fine wine. She keeps getting better with age. She really is the best!! Tiff has done a great job raising our kids, making meals, keeping the house clean, and everything else she does all while working 40 to 60 hours a week. She is so busy, I can’t get a haircut! She is basically the opposite of me……she is nice and friendly, and everybody likes her. Most importantly, she puts up with me!! She is the best wife a guy could ask for, and I thank her for everything.

U – UMC Men’s Club Hockey – The UMC Men’s Club Hockey team continues to win in their third season as a program. They have mostly area kids and are off to a 15-3 start, and when they get back into action in January, they will have a month before the conference tournament. The goal is to make the club hockey national tourney this year and they should have a decent shot this year.

V – Victories – The Minnesota Timberwolves are leading the NBA Western Conference, and even the most die-hard Timberwolves fan is waiting for something to happen. So far, Anthony Edwards has proven to be one of the best players in the NBA, and the Rudy Gobert trade is paying off this year.  It should be a fun rest of the year.
The Minnesota Wild have been on fire since firing their coach. They have won four games in a row and are 7-3 in their last 10 games. They are right back into the thick of things, as far as playoff contention goes, and in the NHL, if you make the playoffs, you have a shot at the cup, which has been proven year after year.

W – Wes Knutson – Wes was a Minnesota High School registered official for 51 years. He officiated nearly every sport except hockey, with many section and state tournament experiences.  Wes had a stroke after heart surgery last year and we are happy to say he is doing better each day!  This year, Wes was inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame for his many, many years of umpiring softball.

X – X-Factor – Crookston Pirate Winter athletic teams X-factors –
Boys Hockey – This was the toughest one to pick. So, I took the easy route. All the players. They have had a solid start to the season, and they are fun to watch and have more depth than I have seen a Pirate team have in many years. They will need a solid group of seniors to step up their play to be competitive with the top teams in the section (Warroad, EGF, TRF).
Girls Hockey – I am pointing out the obvious, but the MVP is Kambelle Freije, and I believe she is the X-factor. She single-handedly helped Crookston beat Warroad, but scoring goals will be part B. No matter how good your goalie is, you have to score at least a goal to win.
Boys Basketball – The seniors. This is their last year of Pirate Basketball, and if they want to see the season turn around, they will have to lead the charge.
Girls Basketball – Naomi Johnson and Emma Gunderson. They are two leaders who have some good varsity minutes, and how they do will be important to the rest of the season.
Wrestling – I don’t know if this will be possible, but filling the lineup is the x-factor this year. They haven’t been able to fill half of the lineup this year, and as far as the team portion of the season goes, that is going to be the X-factor.

Y – YOU! – If you are reading this, thank you!

Z – Darin Zimmerman – Coach Z will have a firm, stronghold on this spot for years to come. Not just because of the Z in his name but because of what he has done with the girl’s basketball program. I know Darin would be the first to admit that he has some pretty good athletes to work with, he has molded the program into a defensive juggernaut and one o the top programs in the state. They will stay towards the top of the section for many years to come.

Tom Smothers, one-half of The Smothers Brothers comedy duo, dies at age 86

Tom Smothers at the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

Tom Smothers, the older half of the legendary comedy duo The Smothers Brothers, died on Tuesday at the age of 86. According to a statement from the National Comedy Center, Smothers died “following a recent battle with cancer.”

A statement from Tom Smothers’ younger brother and professional partner, Dick Smothers, read that Tom passed away peacefully at his home in Santa Rosa, Calif., with his family at his side. Dick, 84, said in a statement: “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner. I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another. We were truly blessed.”  The folk-singing brothers became household names on their CBS variety show “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,” which ran from 1967 to 1969. Tom played guitar and Dick played stand-up bass as part of the act.

Journey Gunderson, executive director of the National Comedy Center, said in a statement: “Tom was not only an extraordinary comedic talent, who, together with his brother Dick, became the most enduring comedy duo in history, entertaining the world for over six decades — but was a true champion for freedom of speech, harnessing the power of comedy to push boundaries and our political consciousness. Tom was a true pioneer who changed the face of television and transformed our culture with The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which satirized politics, combated racism, protested the Vietnam War, and led the way for ‘Saturday Night Live,’ ‘The Daily Show,’ today’s network late night shows, and so much more.  We were proud to bring Tom and Dick out of retirement and reunite them on stage in 2019 to celebrate their legendary careers, and we are honored to preserve Tom’s remarkable work and legacy here at the National Comedy Center for generations to come.”

Tom is survived by his children, Bo and Riley Rose Smothers, grandson Phoenix, Marcy Carriker Smothers, sister-in-law Marie Smothers, and several nephews and a niece. He is predeceased by his son Tom and sister Sherry Smothers. Dick and his wife, Marie, have requested memorial donations honoring Tom to be made to the National Comedy Center.  A private memorial service for family and friends is set to take place sometime in 2024.
