EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS THIS WINTER BY HUNTING SMALL GAME

dnr-small-hunt46222

Hunting pheasants, ruffed grouse, squirrels or rabbits offers opportunities to enjoy the Minnesota outdoors as temperatures fall and snow blankets the landscape.

  • Pheasants: Hunting season is open through Jan. 1, 2024. On Dec. 1, the daily bag limit increases to three roosters, with a possession limit of nine roosters. The best places to find pheasants at this time of year are in tall grass or cattail marshes. Hunters should remember to exercise caution around thin ice.
  • Grouse: Hunting season is open through Jan. 1, 2024. Wintertime grouse hunters might find success during the “golden hour,” which is the last hour before sunset, when ruffed grouse move out of their snow roosts to feed.
  • Squirrels: Hunting season is open through Feb. 28, 2024. Winter is breeding season for squirrels, which means they are active and easier to find.
  • Rabbits: Hunting season is open through Feb. 28, 2024. Hunters will find the most success around thick cover, such as brush piles, thorn tangles and briars.

Check out the regulations and complete bag limit information on the Minnesota DNR website. More information about how or where to hunt can be found on the DNR’s learn to hunt webpages. Recorded webinars with tips on how to hunt pheasants, grouse, squirrels or rabbits are available on the outdoor skills and stewardship page of the DNR website.

POLK COUNTY BOARD REAPPOINTS WATERSHED DISTRICT MANAGERS

polk-county-government-749055

The Polk County Board Commissioners met Tuesday morning at the Polk County Government Center.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE CALL REPORT FOR OCTOBER

The main agenda began with Sheriff James Tadman reviewing the month of October service calls for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. In total, the Sheriff’s office received 746 calls. The most frequent calls were:

Civil Process – 260
Traffic Stops – 118
School Patrol – 79
Traffic Complaints and Hazards – 28
Public Assist – 24
Animal Complaints – 18
Assisting Another Agency – 16
Motorist Assist – 14
Welfare Check – 14
Info/Tip – 13

“I thought the calls for service looked really good,” Tadman said. “I kind of go through all the different ones, but looking out is: How many accidents we had for the month of October with the beet harvest going on and the busy time with all the farmers in the field. That stands out. And also looking at our careless driving and total number of stops we had, traffic was 118, so all in all, it was a very good month for us.”

The board also approved the Addendum 4- Special Operations Group Joint Power Agreement. This addendum adds the Norman County Service Office to the Joint Power Agreement, which also includes the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Forks P.D., East Grand Forks P.D., Crookston P.D., and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

WATERSHED BOARD MEMBERS

The board heard from Sand Hill River Watershed District Manager Don Andringa and Treasurer Clayton Bartz about reappointing them to the Sand Hill Watershed Advisory Committee. “There’s an advisory board that submits names for managers,” Andringa said. “First, we have to agree to run, and then, if the advisory board picks us, we come before the county board.”

The board also heard from Red Lake River Watershed Board Manager Gene Tiedemann about being reappointed to the Board of Managers. They also heard from farmer Kevin Kruger about adding his name for a position on the board. Both requests were not approved at this meeting but will be heard again at the next meeting.

“I voted to deadlock the vote at 2-2,” Polk County District Two Commissioner Warren Strandell said. “My thought was that Gene Tiedemann has lots of experience and probably is in line to be chair of the commission in the next year; the current chair is retiring, so I kind of had to consider that. Although Kevin is a very strong person, and I sure hope he’s in line to be a candidate next time.”

EAST POLK SOIL WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT

The board heard from Rachel Klein about funding for the feedlot program. The funding is fed through the county, which means they oversee the program. “The feedlots program is for producers that won cattle, sheep, whatever type of livestock that choose to be registered,” said Klein. “They are required to be registered if they have over 50 animal units or ten animal units within shoreline.”

The commissioners ultimately approved the funding for the Feedlot Program.

CONSENT AGENDA

The consent agenda included the approval of the November 21 Board minutes. It also included the approval of bills and disbursements in the amount of $2,311.54.

The next board meeting will be Tuesday, December 12, at the Polk County Government Center.
