BCA RELEASES INFORMATION ON THE OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING THAT KILLED AN EGF MAN

The University of North Dakota Forensic Pathology Center has confirmed the identity of a man police shot and killed on Jan. 9 while officers were attempting to serve a warrant in Polk County. Lucas Paul Gilbertson, 42, of rural East Grand Forks, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the forensic pathologist.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the officer who shot Gilbertson. According to the East Grand Forks police chief, the officer is a member of the Pine-to-Prairie Drug Task Force and works in an undercover capacity. The BCA is not releasing the officer’s name in accordance with Minnesota Statute 13.82, subdivision 17 (a).

  • The officer deployed his Taser and fired his department handgun. He is on standard administrative leave.

According to the preliminary investigation, members of the Pine-to-Prairie Drug Task Force learned on January 9 that Gilbertson, who was wanted on a warrant, was at a home in East Grand Forks. Just before noon, they went to the home to arrest him. The task force members surrounded the home to stop Gilbertson from escaping and at one point, the undercover East Grand Forks police officer entered the home and encountered Gilbertson. During that encounter, the officer deployed his Taser and fired his handgun at Gilbertson multiple times, striking him. Also during the encounter, Gilbertson broke a window and threw a handgun out of the home. Officers provided emergency care to Gilbertson until he could be taken to the hospital, where he later died. No one else was injured during this incident. BCA agents continue to investigate exactly how the incident inside the home unfolded.

Crime scene personnel found a handgun on the ground near the home. There is body-worn and squad camera video from this incident, but not of the shooting itself. The officer who used force was not wearing a body camera. BCA agents are reviewing all available video as part of their active investigation.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office asked the BCA to investigate this incident. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without a charging recommendation to the Polk County Attorney’s Office for review.

BCA UPDATE:
UND Forensic Pathology has identified the man police killed in a force incident yesterday in Polk County.   Lucas Paul Gilbertson, 42, of rural East Grand Forks died after being shot.  MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continue to actively investigate this incident.

HIGHLAND PRESCHOOL ADDITION MAKES LARGE STRIDES IN BUILDING PROCESS

The Preschool addition at Highland Elementary School has seen progress through the winter thus far.

The project was initially scheduled to be finished on January 1 this year. However, a plumbing permit was needed to continue operations in October, which delayed the process ten weeks. There is a possibility the building will be completed by late February. “They finished up the parking lot in the fall, which was very helpful,” said Highland Elementary School Principal Chris Trostad, “For our students’ drop-off and pick-up. That has been helpful for us.”

Other portions of completion with the preschool addition include the earthwork, the assembly of the building, a finished roof, windows, doors, and steel siding to the exterior of the building. “On the inside right now, they are hanging sheetrock,” said Trostad, “They going to start taping and texturing, then they’ll paint, and once they’re done with that, they will work on flooring and probably end up installing cabinets, doors, things like that.”

Along with the preschool addition, Highland School will install an additional parking lot for teachers and parents and a continued road path where parents can have an extended area for pick up and drop off. “One nice thing is we’ve increased the distance of the parent drop-off zone,” said Trostad, “There’s going to be two lanes going through there, so parents will be able to go right in by the playground in front of the school and be able to exit where they drop off. This will add a lot of extra parking, and we’re bringing over Washington staff, so we’ll need more parking.” Another addition to the building will include a new elevator, which will lead to an activity area for pre-K and kindergarten students.

This project is being funded through leftover Covid grant funding. The total project cost has racked up to approximately $4 million. This project has not included tax dollars from citizens or city funding.

Trostad also spoke highly of the crew working on the preschool addition. With the plumbing permit mishap, he believes the construction crew has worked hard and made up time from the ten-week delay.

Judge allows Donald Trump to speak at closing arguments at NY cvil fraud trial

Former President Donald Trump at civil fraud trial at NYS court in New York on October 2^ 2023

On Thursday in the New York civil fraud trial of former President Donald Trump, Judge Arthur Engoron allowed Trump to speak at closing arguments, despite having denied a request from Trump to speak a day earlier. After Trump’s defense gave their closing argument in the morning, the former president left the courtroom and held a press conference at the Trump Building in New York. The prosecution delivered its closing arguments Thursday afternoon.

Trump was allowed to address the court, and Engoron directed Trump to promise that he would limit his comments to the facts of the case, to which Trump replied the case “goes outside just the facts.” Trump, who spoke for about five minutes, again accused Attorney General Laetitia James of being politically motivated in bringing the case against him and the Trump Organization, calling his financial statements “perfect” and saying the case is a “political witch hunt,” and shared his criticism of Judge Engoron but said the judge’s decision “may surprise some people. We’ll see what happens.” Trump’s attorney Chris Kise later delivered closing arguments for about two hours. ”

After he left the courtroom, Trump told reporters the case is a “political witch hunt the likes of which nobody has ever seen before. They owe me damages for what they’ve done. We’re a very innocent company. What we’ve run is a great company. That’s been proven. A very highly successful company.”

In the courtroom, Trump’s attorneys added that James attempted to “intimidate” Trump and other executives in his organization, and Kise told Engoron that his decision could have an impact on other large corporations in New York. Trump and the Trump Organization, headed by his sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., face a potential $250 million penalty for committing fraud. They were found guilty in the fall of inflating the value of their real estate properties.

Hunter Biden pleads not guilty at arraignment on tax charges

Hunter Biden ^court session. Judicial Hammer on the background of the photo.

Before District Judge Mark Scarsi in the Central District of California on Thursday, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to nine federal tax charges. Federal prosecutors charged Hunter Biden in December with nine counts of tax crimes, including three felony and six misdemeanor charges related to his alleged failure to file and pay taxes, evasion of assessment and filing a false or fraudulent tax return. If convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 17 years in prison.

In the 56-page indictment, prosecutors alleged Hunter Biden earned more than $7 million in gross income when he failed to pay taxes. They said he funded an “extravagant lifestyle” and evaded taxes by classifying some personal expenditures as business deductions. His indictments came after a plea agreement on two misdemeanor tax charges and a diversion agreement stemming from the firearms charge unraveled in court in July 2023 when the judge questioned whether the agreement would allow Hunter Biden to avoid potential future charges, as well as the charges related to his taxes.

The tax charges filed in California were brought by special counsel David Weiss in the second federal indictment of the president’s son secured by his office. Weiss, who was appointed U.S. attorney for Delaware by former President Donald Trump and named special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2023, charged Hunter Biden with three felony gun charges in the state of Delaware, related to his alleged unlawful possession of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty to the gun charges in October.

The hearing is still underway where the conditions of his release and the timing for the case and timing for pre-trial motions will likely be determined.

Michael Strahan’s daughter Isabella, 19, reveals brain tumor diagnosis

Michael Strahan^ Sophia Strahan & Isabella Strahan at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Awards 2018 at Barker Hangar

Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan’s daughter Isabella is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a common malignant tumor that arises in the cerebellum, a part of the brain located at the base of the skull.

The father and daughter shared the health news in a segment that aired on GMA Thursday morning. Isabella learned received her diagnosis in late October 2023, and underwent emergency surgery at Cedars-Sinai to remove the mass on Oct. 27, a day before her 19th birthday. Isabella said during an interview with GMA co-anchor Robin Roberts she will start chemotherapy at Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center in Durham, North Carolina, next month, sharing: “I’m feeling good. Not too bad. That’s my next step. I’m ready for it to start and be one day closer to being over. …. I’m very excited for this whole process to wrap. But you just have to keep living every day, I think, through the whole thing.”

Michael, 52, said in the interview: “I literally think that, in a lot of ways, I’m the luckiest man in the world, because I’ve got an amazing daughter. I know she’s going through it, but I know that we’re never given more than we can handle and that she is going to crush this.”

Isabella said she first began experiencing symptoms of her brain tumor while beginning her freshman year at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After originally shrugging it off as vertigo, her condition took a turn for the worse on Oct. 25, and Michael said: “that was when we decided, ‘You need to really go get a thorough checkup.’ And thank goodness for the doctor. I feel like this doctor saved her life because she was thorough enough to say, ‘Let’s do the full checkup.’” After she headed to Cedars-Sinai for a full MRI, doctors discovered Isabella had developed a fast-growing tumor in the back of her brain, measuring 4 centimeters.

The father of four (who shares Tanita, 32, and Michael Jr., 29, with his first wife Wanda Hutchins; and twins Isabella and Sophia with his second wife, Jean Muggli) took off from GMA to be by his daughter’s side, with ABC saying at the time Strahan was “dealing with some personal family matters.”

Following her surgery, Isabella underwent several rounds of radiation treatment, as well as a month of rehabilitation. She now plans on documenting her journey in a new YouTube series to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center. Isabella said on GMA: “It’s been like, two months of keeping it quiet, which is definitely difficult. I don’t wanna hide it anymore ’cause it’s hard to always keep in. I hope to just kind of be a voice, and be [someone] who maybe [those who] are going through chemotherapy or radiation can look at. Perspective is a big thing. I’m grateful. I am grateful just to walk or see friends or do something, ’cause when you can’t do something, it really impacts you.”
