INCOME TAX FILING BEGINS JANUARY 29

Minnesota taxpayers can begin filing their state income tax returns today, Monday, January 29, 2024. This is the same date the Internal Revenue Service will begin accepting federal income tax returns. Taxpayers have until Monday, April 15, 2024, to file and pay their state and federal income taxes.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue offers tips to income tax filers as they prepare to file their tax returns:

  • File a return to claim the new Child Tax Credit. Beginning with tax year 2023, you may qualify for a Child Tax Credit of $1,750 per qualifying child, with no limit on the number of children claimed. This is a refundable credit, meaning you can receive a refund even if you do not owe tax. You must file a 2023 individual income tax return to claim the credit. Learn more about income requirements and qualifications on the Child Tax Credit webpage.

  • See if you qualify for free tax preparation. If your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is $79,000 or less, you may qualify to file electronically for free. Use the links on our website to see if you qualify for free state and federal income tax filing. You may also qualify for free tax preparation for your returns. Beginning at the end of January, free tax preparation sites will be available across Minnesota through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax-Aide programs. Some sites offer in-person options, while others offer virtual services. You can visit our website to find free tax preparation sites near you.

  • Save your receipts and other tax-related documents. If you claim certain deductions or credits, be sure to include all required documentation when filing and save copies in case you need to reference them in the future.

  • Check for accuracy. Enter your name and any dependent’s names exactly as they appear on Social Security cards, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) cards, or letters. Double-check bank routing and account numbers used on tax forms for direct deposit. Incorrect information on tax forms can result in refund delays.

  • File your return by the April 15 due date, even if you owe more than you can pay. Pay as much as you can by the due date. You can include your banking information on your electronically filed return to make the payment or pay electronically with our e-Services Payment System. You can specify when the payment will be taken from your checking or savings account in advance or on the due date. If you do not pay the full amount, we will send you a bill for the remaining balance with options to pay.

After you file:

  • Track Your Refund. You can track where your refund is in the process by using our Where’s My Refund? You will be able to track which of the four stages your refund is in and whether you need to take any action to allow us to complete the processing of your refund.

  • Respond to correspondence if requested. The department may mail you a letter asking you to confirm your identity or provide documentation for various tax benefits you may have taken. Respond to these requests as soon as you can so we can use the information to complete our review and process your return.

  • Contact us if you move after filing your return. That way, anything sent to you will reach you, such as refund checks or requests for more information. You should do this even when requesting a direct deposit. Call us at 651-296-3781 or 1-800-652-9094 (toll-free) to change your address.

Property Tax Refunds

  • Wait to track your Property Tax Refund. Many taxpayers file their property tax returns at the same time as their income tax returns. By law, we cannot begin processing Property Tax Refunds before July 1. Check back later this year for updates on current year Property Tax Refunds.

3 U.S. troops killed, dozens injured in drone attack on base in Jordan

Expert team of soldiers with weapons attacking enemy

According to United States Central Command, three U.S. troops were killed and over two dozen were injured by Iranian-backed militants, following an aerial drone attack on a base in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border. The strike marked the first line-of-fire deaths of U.S. troops since the Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7. According to officials, the attack occurred at the Tower 22 outpost. The White House clarified that the attack occurred early Sunday in Jordan, or late Saturday Eastern time.

In a statement, President Joe Biden said that the U.S. was still gathering the facts surrounding the “wholly unjust attack.” Biden said: “Today, America’s heart is heavy. Last night, three U.S. service members were killed — and many wounded — during an unmanned aerial drone attack on our forces stationed in northeast Jordan near the Syria border.” Biden said the three service members were “unwavering in their bravery. Unflinching in their duty. Unbending in their commitment to our country… they were patriots in the highest sense … We will strive to be worthy of their honor and valor. We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt — we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing.”  The troops have not been identified pending notification of next of kin. An official with the White House National Security Council said that some of the injured service members received serious wounds from shrapnel and some were being screened for traumatic brain injuries.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq released a statement Sunday taking credit for four drone attacks on Al-Shaddadi Base in Syria and the Al-Rukban and Al-Tanf bases at the Syria-Jordan border. The fourth attack was on the Zevulun naval facility in Israel.

Nancy Pelosi asks for FBI probe of pro-Palestine protesters, suggesting links to Russia

Speaker Nancy Pelosi holding town hall at Mount Saint Vincent College; New York^ NY - March 14^ 2022

Former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday that she thinks some protests in the United States demanding a ceasefire in Gaza could be linked to Russia, and that the FBI should conduct a probe into their funding.

In an interview with CNN, Pelosi was asked whether opposition to President Joe Biden’s policy in the war in Gaza could hurt the Democrat in November’s presidential election, when she replied that “for them to call for a cease-fire is Mr. Putin’s message, Mr. Putin’s message. Make no mistake, this is directly connected to what he would like to see. Same thing with Ukraine. It’s about Putin’s message .. “I think some of these protesters are spontaneous, and organic, and sincere. Some I think are connected to Russia. Some financing should be investigated and I want to ask the FBI to investigate that.”  Pelosi provided no evidence for her claims.

Pelosi’s comments marked the first time a prominent U.S. lawmaker has accused Russia’s leader of backing U.S. protesters calling for a ceasefire. Her comments were dismissed as “unsubstantiated smears” by some rights advocates, who said such remarks amounted to dehumanization of the Palestinian people. Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said: “It is unconscionable that an individual with such influence in this nation would spread unsubstantiated smears targeting those who seek an end to the slaughter of civilians in Gaza and a just resolution to that conflict. Her comments once again show the negative impact of decades of dehumanization of the Palestinian people.”

The U.N. has demanded an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, but Washington has vetoed resolutions for such calls in the United Nations Security Council, saying it would let Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which governs Gaza, regroup and rebuild.

Jay Leno files for conservatorship of wife Mavis amid her Alzheimer’s diagnosis

JAY LENO & wife MAVIS at the fifth annual Adopt-A-Minefield Gala in Beverly Hills. November 15^ 2005 Beverly Hills^ CA.

Comedian Jay Leno has filed for conservatorship of his wife Mavis, who reportedly is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. TMZ reports that 77-year-old Mavis is unable to fully take care of herself amid her diagnosis, which is the basis for Leno’s conservatorship request of his wife’s estate in a Los Angeles court.

According to legal records, Leno, 73, submitted paperwork on Jan. 26 which revealed Mavis’ medical condition. Thepetition seeks a substituted judgment to approve estate planning and implement a testamentary plan that he believes his wife would execute if she were capable. The documents state: “Unfortunately, Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years. As Mavis’s current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan, Jay has petitioned the Court to be appointed conservator of Mavis’s estate for the sole purpose of filing a petition for substituted judgment on her behalf in order to ensure her desires concerning the disposition of her assets upon her.” A hearing regarding the conservatorship is scheduled for April 9.

Jay and Mavis met in 1970, and have been married for 43 years; they do not have any children. Leno hosted The Tonight Show from 1992 to 2014, with a brief break from 2009 to 2010 when Conan O’Brien took over. Leno headlined Jay Leno’s Garage from 2014 to 2022.

Jay has also battled health issues in recent years; in late 2022, he suffered serious burns to his face, arms and hands in a gasoline fire that erupted in his garage while he was working to repair a clogged fuel line in his 1907 White Steam Car, one of his collectible vintage vehicles. The comedian was released from the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles after undergoing 10 days of burn treatment, and underwent reconstructive surgeries. Two months later, in January 2023, Jay got into a motorcycle accident, breaking his collarbone, two ribs and his kneecaps.
