Snap, Inc., parent company of Snapchat, to layoff 10% of global workforce

Sign at the New York Stock Exchange marking the Initial Public Offering of Snapchat's parent company^ Snap Inc. in New York City. March 2^ 2017

Social media company Snap Inc. (SNAP) announced on Monday that it will lay off 10% of its global workforce, or around 500 employees, in part to “promote in-person collaboration.” The company announced several rounds of layoffs since 2022, most recently in November when it laid off a small number of product employees. A Snap spokesperson said, “we are reorganizing our team to reduce hierarchy and promote in-person collaboration. We are focused on supporting our departing team members.”

In an SEC filing, Snap said, “We announced a plan to reduce our global headcount by approximately 10% of our global full-time employees. In order to best position our business to execute on our highest priorities, and to ensure we have the capacity to invest incrementally to support our growth over time, we have made the difficult decision to restructure our team.”

According to a regulatory filing, the company currently estimates to incur pre-tax charges in the range of $55 million to $75 million as a result of the layoffs, primarily consisting of severance and related costs, and other charges, of which $45 million to $55 million are expected to be future cash expenditures. The majority of these costs are expected to be incurred during the first quarter of 2024.

Snap Inc.’s shares fell nearly 3% in morning trading; stock remains below its debut price and well off its 2021 high of around $83.

Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement on Monday, February 5 that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer. The 75-year-old Charles recently underwent a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate last month.

A statement from the Palace posted to social media read as follows: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. * His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual. * The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible * His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

The palace did not offer further details on the type of cancer that King Charles was diagnosed with, nor did they share what stage the cancer is. The King was last seen publicly attending church on Sunday with Queen Camilla at St. Mary Magdalene Church near Sandringham, marking the monarch’s first outing since leaving the hospital on Jan. 29 following a three-day stay after his prostate procedure. King Charles returned to London from Sandringham on Monday to commence treatment as an out-patient.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ returning to theaters including IMAX

science fiction spy film from Christopher Nolan TENET display at the cinema to promote the movie

Director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. will theatrically re-release his 2020 sci-fi film “Tenet.”  The film, starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki, follows an ex-CIA agent who is tasked with investigating mysterious, time-traveling objects linked to an attack from the future to the present.

Tenet will return to movie theaters on 70mm Imax, Imax, digital and 70mm film screens for one week only, starting Feb. 23. The screenings, held across the U.S. and in select international markets, will be accompanied by exclusive footage of “Dune: Part Two,” which debuts on March 1.

Nolan said in a statement, “Seeing the way audiences responded to our large format presentations of ‘Oppenheimer,’ I’m thrilled that Warner Bros. is giving audiences a chance to see ‘Tenet’ the way it was intended to be seen, on the largest Imax and large format film screens, and I’m honored to have our movie warm up the film projectors for Denis [Villenueve]’s jaw-dropping ‘Dune: Part Two.’”

Dune: Part Two’ director Denis Villeneuve added: “As an audience member, I have always valued Chris’s forward thinking when it comes to shooting on film and especially in large formats. As directors, we are completely in sync; on ‘Dune,’ we shot several sequences for Imax, and I simply loved it, so for ‘Dune: Part Two,’ we pushed it to 100% of the movie. Working with the Imax format was the only way to capture the experience of Arrakis, Giedi Prime and the Imperium for audiences. That is why I am just as eager to see ‘Tenet’ again, but now in 70mm Imax, the way they filmed it, to fully appreciate his vision for this incredible film.”

Tickets for “Tenet” are on sale now. You can watch the re-release trailer: here.

CROOKSTON EAGLES CLUB TO HOST 3RD ANNUAL CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT FOR CAMP CONFIDENCE

The Crookston Eagles Club will be hosting its 3rd annual Cornhole Tournament to raise funds for the Camp Confidence Foundation. This will take place on Saturday, February 10.

Camp Confidence, also known as Confidence Learning Center, is a camp that is located on East Gull Lake near Brainerd. The camp provides outdoor activities and camping experiences to individuals with cognitive or developmental disabilities. Camp Confidence serves people from every county in Minnesota.

“The Eagles has been very involved with this organization for over 40 years,” said Local Aerie secretary for Crookston Aerie 873 Jake Fee, “Camp Confidence has been around for about 50 years, and the Eagles has been involved basically since the get-go.”

The cost per team is $40, and Venmo is available. It’s double elimination with payouts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. The payouts will be determined based on how many teams are registered. The Eagles Club will also serve pulled pork sandwiches throughout the tournament with free-will donations.

Registration will take place at the Crookston Eagles from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on February 10. The tournament will begin at noon, and since this will take place the day before the NFL’s Super Bowl, those who attend will be encouraged to wear their favorite football jersey for a chance at a $20 bar tab. To pre-register, call or text Tandra at 218-289-0575 or Nicole at 443-716-8635.

“This tournament is intended for all skill levels,” said Fee, “You can be a guy who throws bags once every five years, or you can be one who’s pretty good at it. But this is a fundraising event, so you’re not going to the world championship by any means; it’s just a great opportunity to get out there, have a little fun, throw some bags, and raise some money for a great cause.”

The next fundraising event for Camp Confidence will be the Camp Confidence Extravaganza, which will occur on March 9. You can pick up your tickets at Scotts True Value Monday through Friday from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and at the Crookston Eagles Club from 3:00 p.m. to close Monday through Friday.

Fee spoke about what these fundraisers ultimately go toward and that Camp Confidence relies heavily on the efforts of organizations such as the Eagles to raise funds so they can maintain operations. “Fundraisers like this help offset the cost the workers at Camp Confidence,” said Fee, “Also electric bills, or if they want to build more cabins to host more campers and all of the other costs it takes to run the operation.”

CROOKSTON AREA COMMUNITY FUND SEEKING GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR LOCAL NON PROFITS

The Crookston Area Community Fund invites grant applications to support charitable, educational, and public-purpose projects that will enhance or improve the quality of life for residents and visitors of the Crookston area. Grants will be considered from any nonprofit organization or public agency whose project addresses one of the topics, which include education, economic development, healthcare, environment and recreation, and cultural and community service.

This program is based on the Northwest Minnesota Foundation in Bemidji, and they can disburse funds throughout the region. “They are soliciting communities to have these funds,” said Crookston Area Community Fund Chair member Shirley Iverson, “They were able to do that and do a capital drive where the money goes into an endowment.”

The Crookston Area Community Fund also has a Disaster Relief Fund. This fund helped mitigate costs for community members who faced challenges from the high water incident in 2022. “During that time there were 27 households we could assist,” said Iverson, “With a small grant, and that grant was capped at $500, we also helped one person re-locate using this disaster fund money.” Other funds managed through the program are the Crookston Sports Arena Fund (The Legacy Fund) and the Crookston Parks and Rec Fund.

The Crookston Area Community Fund will consider grant applications of $500 to $10,000, with a total amount available for 2024 grants of $25,000. Special consideration will be given to projects that collaborate with others, utilize matching funds (either cash or in-kind), provide a long-term impact, and have the ability to use the grant funds by December 31, 2024. “I encourage all of the nonprofit and local agencies to apply for the grant dollars,” said Iverson, “This is a unique opportunity to be creative and apply for either matching dollars or dollars you need to complete a project to make Crookston a more vibrant and engaging community to live in.”

Applications are available at the Crookston City Hall, Crookston Area Community Fund Facebook page, or you may request a copy be sent to you. An electronic copy of the application can be downloaded from www.nwmf.org

Crookston Area Community Fund grant applications are due April 1, 2024. Mail or deliver one copy to the Crookston Area Community Fund, PO Box 543, Crookston, MN 56716. Completed applications may also be dropped off at Crookston City Hall, 124 North Broadway, Crookston, MN 56716. Grants will be awarded in May 2024.
