GOLDEN LINK SENIOR CENTER TO HOST PRESENTATION GIVEN BY FARGO MEMORIAL HONOR GUARD

The Golden Link Senior Center will host a presentation given by Fargo Memorial Honor Guard representatives regarding the Fargo National Cemetery on Saturday, March 16, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Fargo National Cemetery was established in 2016 and is a 4.8-acre United States Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) national cemetery located in Raymond Township. The graveyard can hold the burial needs of just over 30,000 veterans, their spouses, and eligible family members.

Fargo Memorial Guard Representatives Jim Graalum and Jason Hicks will present information for veterans and their spouses in the area. They will also present plans for the Fargo Veterans Cemetery facilities. “They’re coming to give information about the cemetery,” said Commander of the Crookston American Legion Nels T Wold Post 20, and 20-year National Guard Veteran Paul Dubuque, “They’re also coming because they want to build a chapel. There’s nothing at the cemetery for people to gather afterward, and they’re looking to build a chapel or something of that nature so that people can go somewhere after the ceremony.”

This presentation will take place in Crookston because of the city’s central location. Notifications have been sent out to veterans in East Grand Forks, Ada, Fertile, and other neighboring towns to encourage veterans to attend this event. Dubuque explains that this is an opportunity for veterans to consider being buried in a national cemetery much closer to home. “I think that the other one would be in Bemidji and Fort Snelling,” said Dubuque, “There’s more in the cities too. But this would be the closest one for people here and veterans in Northwest Minnesota.”

The Golden Link will serve a continental breakfast at 10:00 a.m. This will consist of coffee and rolls before the presentation begins. All veterans and spouses are welcome to attend this presentation.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell endorses Donald Trump for president

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).NATIONAL HARBOR^ MD - MARCH 6^ 2014:

On Wednesday, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell endorsed Donald Trump for president in a drastic turnaround. McConnell declared his support in a short statement after Trump’s Super Tuesday victories, which pushed the GOP front-runner closer to the party nomination. McConnell’s statement read: “It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States. It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support.”

McConnell, Trump’s onetime critic who criticized his as “morally responsible” for the “disgraceful” acts in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, has not spoken to the former president since 2020 – after he declared Democrat Joe Biden the winner of the that year’s presidential election.

The endorsement from McConnell comes after he announced last week he would step down after this term as leader, a position he has held longer than any other senator. Despite his concerns about Trump, McConnell seems to be in favor of the outcomes the former president was able to accomplish during his term, saying that he and Trump “worked together to accomplish great things for the American people.”  With McConnell leading the Senate, Trump signed a GOP tax cuts package into law, and was able to have the Senate confirm three justices to the Supreme Court while fulfilling conservatives’ long-term goal of overturning Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to an abortion.

Democrat Adam Schiff, Republican Steve Garvey advance to general election for California’s Senate seat

Senator Adam Schiff speaking at the Democratic Party Endorsing Convention in Long Beach^ CA. Nov 16^ 2019:

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Republican Steve Garvey will face each other in California’s November Senate race. seeking to fill late Sen. Diane Feinstein’s Senate seat. Feinstein, D-Calif., died last September, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler to serve out the remainder of her term.

Schiff and Garvey defeated progressive Democrats Katie Porter and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), and will face-off in the general election. Under California’s primary election system, the two candidates with the most votes advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.  Porter and Lee will also vacate their House seats at the end of the term.  The results mean that for the first time in 30 years, California will not be represented by a woman in the U.S. Senate. Either Schiff or Garvey will be the first White male U.S. senator representing California in 32 years. Democrats are favored to win the general election in the solidly blue state.

Schff said in a recent interview that if elected senator, his top priorities will be to “make the economy work for people. For millions of people, they’re working harder than ever and they’re still struggling to get by. We need to bring down the cost of housing first and foremost here in California … But the other two big existential threats are to our democracy and to our planet. And these are the issues I’ve been talking about throughout the state. The need to fight for an economy that, you know, that rewards folks who are working hard with a good quality of life and, but also save our democracy from a would-be dictator.”

Garvey, a political newcomer who played for Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, hailed his performance as a “California comeback” and said at an election night celebration that “what you’re all feeling tonight is what it’s like to hit a walk-off home run … but keep in mind this is the first game of a doubleheader. So keep the evening of November 5 open.”

Drake Bell alleges sexual abuse by Nickelodeon dialogue coach

Drake Bell at Camelot Theater on January 3^ 2018 in Palm Springs^ CA

Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell has alleged he was sexually abused at the age of 15 by a Nickelodeon dialogue coach. Appearing on the forthcoming ‘Investigation Discovery’ series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, Bell says that he was a victim of abuse at the hands of actor Brian Peck, who worked as a dialogue coach on Nickelodeon’s ‘All That’ and ‘The Amanda Show’. Bell starred in The Amanda Show from 1999 to 2002 before going on to take the lead role in his own Nickelodeon series in 2004, Drake & Josh.

Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV is a four-part docuseries investigating the toxic work conditions at children’s shows in the 1990s and early 2000s, airing on March 17-18. The docuseries will reportedly include interviews with several other former child stars and crew members. A trailer teasing Bell’s appearance in Quiet on Set was released, along with a press release from ‘Investigation Discovery’ stating: “The clip reveals that former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell will be sharing publicly, for the first time, the story of the abuse he suffered at the hands of Brian Peck, his former dialogue coach who was convicted in 2004 for his crimes against Drake and ordered to register as a sex offender.”

In 2003, Peck was arrested and pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act against a 14- or 15-year-old and oral copulation with a minor under the age 16. Peck was ultimately convicted, sentenced to 16 months in prison, and ordered to register as a sex offender in 2004. Bell has had a tumultuous last few years — in 2021, a judge ordered him to serve two years of probation and 200 hours of community service after pleading guilty to charges of attempted child endangerment and sending inappropriate messages to a 15-year-old girl. He had at that point recently completed a two-year probation sentence, after he pled guilty to child endangerment in June 2021. He was also briefly reported missing by Florida Police in 2023, with the Daytona Beach Police Department posting an alert on their Facebook saying Bell was “considered missing and endangered”. After he was found safely, Bell announced shortly thereafter that his wife, Janet Von Schmeling, had filed for divorce.
