SPORTS FEEVER – March 7, 2024

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

What a great time of year. We have State Boys Hockey going on in St. Paul, Section Girls Basketball championships this weekend and boys sectional tournament play the next week-plus.  Best of luck to all teams, and enjoy the exciting experience!!!

— — —

The Section 8AA Girls Basketball Tournament Championship will be pretty much as expected, with Perham taking on Pelican Rapids. The game will be played on Friday, March 8, at Concordia College Moorhead at 7:00 PM.
Perham has pretty much coasted through the tournament while Pelican Rapids trailed big in the first half of the semi-finals, but battled back to win in overtime.

The top two seeds are playing in the championship and Perham will be the favorite to win the game. But this is an interesting matchup. Perham has the best post player in the section and one of the top players in the state with Willow Thiel. Pelican Rapids plays solid defense and has outstanding guard play.

I am picking Perham to win by 8 points.

— — —

The Section 8A Girls Basketball CHAMPIONSHIP game is on Friday at Ralph Englestad Arena in TRF. It is no surprise after having the top two seeds in each sub-section play in the semi-finals, and now you have Kittson County Central taking on Fosston for a trip to state.

Kittson County Central’s athleticism is the top in the section, and if they are able to run and gun, they are going to be tough to beat. Fosston is a defensive-minded team, and if they can slow down the game, they will be tough to beat.
Kittson County Central is deeper, and I give them the nod in this game.  KCC to win by 10.

KROX will have the game on our video stream with a pre-game show at 6:30 p.m. and an opening tip at 7 PM.

7:45 PM – Game 3 winner vs Game 4 winner

CHAMPIONSHIP (Friday, March 15 at Concordia College)
7:00 PM –

Crookston will take on East Grand Forks in the first round. It will be the third meeting between the two teams. EGF won big in the first meeting and they held on to edge Crookston the second game.

This will be an interesting matchup. If Crookston takes care of the ball and plays defense the entire game and gets after it, they could win.  Of course, they will have to make some shots and not have an offensive drought. East Grand Forks will want to run and gun, and if they are able to do that, they could win big again.
I am not comfortable on a pick for this game because it all depends on Crookston playing like they are capable. If they play like they are capable the entire game….they will win. If EGF is able to run and have an up-tempo game, the Green Wave will win!

CHS TO BEGIN DRIVER’S EDUCATION COURSE ON MARCH 25

Kids in the Crookston area eligible to receive a driver’s permit will have another opportunity for Driver’s Education courses. The next dates for the course will be from March 25 through April 15. Registration is due by March 22 if you or someone you know would like to be enrolled.

To be eligible for Drivers Education, students must be 15 or older by May 1 of this year. Parents of the students must complete a Drivers Education form either at the Crookston High School office or by visiting the Crookston Public Schools website. “There are plenty of opportunities to get this done,” said Driver’s Education instructor Chris Trostad, “But we want students to take the class as close to their 15th birthday as possible. This way, as soon as they finish the class, they can get their written permit, drive six hours with me, and log 50 hours (20 hours at night).” Students must have their written permit for at least six months before taking their road test and ultimately getting their driver’s license.

Students looking to get a farmer’s permit can get their license 15 years after completing the course and logging driving hours with Mr. Trostad and on their own, with 30 hours logged in the daytime and 20 hours logged at night. “Farm permit students can drive for a farm-related purpose,” said Trostad, “It has to be within 20 miles of the family farm and cannot be at night. So this gives a couple of options for families whose main income is farming. Students can get that permit early and help out on the farm.” Students who receive farmer’s permits are still required to hold their permits for six months before taking their road test and getting a driver’s license.

The Driver’s Education course costs $325, and the fee covers 30 hours of classroom courses and six hours of behind-the-wheel. The course fee must be paid before the first day of class. Once the course is completed and students log their 50 additional hours behind the wheel, they can take their written permit test at the courthouse.

To find other future Driver’s Education course dates, visit https://www.crookston.k12.mn.us/ and search Drivers Education.

CROOKSTON FIGURE SKATING CLUB TO HOST ANNUAL “DREAMS ON ICE” EVENT THIS WEEKEND

The Crookston Figure Skating Club will host its annual Dreams On Ice show at the Crookston Sports Center on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, March 10, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Skaters ages 2-18 will be able to skate during the event. There will also be a Mom’s Pops and Tots class where two and three-year-olds will be able to skate with their mom, dad, and grandpa. Dreams On Ice will also feature a senior spotlight slot where they will honor the lone senior on the figure skating squad, Emily Boucher. “Emily has passed the top level with the United States Figure Skating Association,” said Director of the Crookston Figure Skating Club Katie Engelstad, “So she’s a gold medalist with United States Figure Skating, so that she will be skating a few times in the show and it will be fun to see her.”

Other classes that will be offered during the event include introductory skating courses for ages five to ten, freestyle skating, ice dancing, and two synchronized teams performing. The doors will open to the rink one hour before each show. Each show will start with the senior recognition featuring Emily Boucher before Engelstad coordinates the show. Each show is estimated to be approximately 90 minutes to two hours with a 15-minute intermission.

The club has various volunteers helping with the event, and Engelstad wanted to express her appreciation. “We have a couple of volunteers this year, including some high school volunteers,” said Engelstad, “We have Emma LaPlante helping out, and we have Ashlyn Bailey, Morgan Larson, and Allison Wagner volunteering for us. We also have our Crookston Figure Skating board members show committee; we’ll have a lot of volunteers. So big shout out to our volunteers because we wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”

The cost to attend the show will be $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and kids in preschool or younger are free. Families can also purchase a $25 family weekend wristband suitable for both shows. Engelstad is encouraging all of Crookston to show their support and see the skaters’ progress over the year. “We really would appreciate it if all of the community would come out and show their support for our skaters,” said Engelstad, “Most of these skaters have skated their whole life, and maybe it’s their first year. They start in November and work on their skills, but they’re excited to show all of their progress throughout the year to their family, friends, and community.”

Nikki Haley to suspend her presidential campaign after Super Tuesday results

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday morning that Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is ending her campaign, ceding the nomination to Donald Trump and setting up a rematch of the 2020 election against President Joe Biden.

The move comes after Haley’s disappointing results in Super Tuesday’s primary contests, after former President Donald Trump won across nearly all the states holding Republican nominating contests. Haley was victorious in Vermont’s Republican primary, just her second win of the primary season.  Trump is on track to reach the necessary 1,215 delegates to clinch the Republican nomination.

Sources close to Haley say she will officially announce to the press she’s ending her campaign in remarks at 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning in Charleston, in her home state of South Carolina.. She is not expected to announce an endorsement Wednesday.
