PIRATE BOY’S TENNIS FINISHES 6TH AT HIBBING TOURNAMENT

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Tennis team finished in a tie for sixth place at the Hibbing tournament. Pine City won the tournament with 31 points.

TEAM SCORES –
1. Pine City – 31
2. Cambridge – 25
3. Mound Westonka – 23
4. Hibbing – 19
5. East Grand Forks – 13
6. Crookston – 10
6. Grand Rapids – 10
8. Duluth Marshall – 0

Crookston came into the tournament a little short-handed without their usual second singles player, Reggie Winjum, and they were also without Hudson Rick.

Isaac Thomforde lost his first match of the day to a kid from Mound Westonka. It was Thomforde’s first loss of the season, but he bounced back and won his next two matches with ease to finish fifth place.

Sam Widseth moved up to second singles and won his first match over a kid from Grand Rapids 7-4, 6-1. He lost the next two matches to players from Mound Westonka and Pine City to finish fourth place.

Gunnar Groven only played two matches, and both of them went to third-set tie-breakers. Both third-sets were great back-and-forth battles, but Gunnar came up short as both scores were 11-9.

Colton Osborn moved in to play fourth singles and lost his first match before winning the second match against a player from Grand Rapids 6-2, 6-1. Colton lost his final match to finish sixth place.

The first doubles team of Jack Everett and Grant Funk lost a heart-breaker in the first round. They won the first set before losing the second set 7-5, which forced a third set. In the third set, they lost 10-8. They received a bye in the second match to advance to the consolation championship, where they lost to a duo from Cambridge.

The second doubles team of Caden Boike and Tim Bruley ran into a solid team from Cambridge and lost their first match. They bounced back to win the second match against a team from Duluth Marshall. They won the first set 6-3 before losing the second set 6-4, which forced a third set. The Crookston duo finished strong and won 10-7 to advance to the consolation championship. They lost a hard-fought match to a pair from Hibbing to finish sixth place.

Ean DeLeon and Alex Zammert teamed up at third doubles, and after losing their first match, they bounced back to win the second match against East Grand Forks 6-2, 6-2. In the consolation championship, the Crookston duo battled and played a great match. They lost the first set 6-4 before bouncing back to win the second set 7-5 to force a third set. The Grand Rapids duo was able to win the race to 10 as they won 10-3 to win the match. But it was a solid performance for the young Pirate team that was playing their first varsity matches as a doubles team.

RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER VOLUNTEER PROGRAM CONNECTS SENIORS TO THEIR COMMUNITIES

The Red River Valley’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) connects volunteers ages 55 and over with impactful service opportunities in their communities that match their skills and availability. RSVP is funded by AmeriCorps Seniors, Minnesota Board on Aging, University of Minnesota Crookston, United Way of Crookston, and surrounding counties, including Kittson, Marshall, Norman, Red Lake, Roseau, Pennington, and Polk. Combined, these seven counties have 640 active volunteers. RSVP has 121 active stations that house and welcome volunteers to assist with seniors and communities. Jennifer Manole is the director of the Red River Valley RSVP.

“Being part of this wonderful program and helping the needs of the communities is unbelievable,” Manole shared. “I can’t believe all of these volunteers are still active.”

For over 45 years, RSVP of the Red River Valley has matched problems to be solved with people willing to help. Today, thousands of seniors participate in RSVP, making it one of the most significant volunteer efforts in the nation. RSVP of the Red River Valley is looking to recruit new volunteers ages 55 and older in the seven counties they serve. They are partnering with more sites, including senior centers, libraries, food shelves, etc.

The Grocery to Go program and the Handy Person program both refreshed after a break from the COVID-19 pandemic isolation period.
“Many seniors in our community need someone to pick up groceries for them as well as come into their home to do simple fixes,” Manole expressed.

RSVP’s most extensive program is Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL), formerly known as Bone Builders. SAIL has over 20 active sites in seven counties, including one hour of exercise twice a week. This is a free class led by volunteers, and many doctors, chiropractors, and therapists recommend SAIL.

Another popular RSVP program is the Reading Buddy program, where volunteers go into kindergarten and first grade to help children read and listen to them read. This includes active volunteers in four different schools.

“Socialization is a big piece of RSVP,” Manole stated. “It keeps our volunteers active and meeting new people.”

As of recently, RSVP has recorded 40,915 volunteer hours served in Polk County, 8,089 hours in Red Lake County, 3,307 hours in Pennington County, 7,885 hours in Marshall County, 3,325 hours in Kittson County, 9,108 hours in Roseau County, and 7,839 hours in Norman CountyPlease complete the form if
If you or anyone you know is interested in joining, RSVP for the Red River Valley form.   For more information, please visit https://crk.umn.edu/americorps-seniors-rsvp-red-river-valley or contact Jennifer Manole at 218-281-8289 or rsvprrv@crk.umn.edu. Often, mileage reimbursement is available for volunteers who must drive, especially when traveling to or from rural areas. The RSVP advisory board meets in Thief River Falls, Minn.

UMC BASEBALL SWEEPS MSU-MANKATO IN DOUBLEHEADER

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Baseball team continues to play solid baseball as they swept Bemidji State University 8-3 and 15-1 in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader played at the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Baseball field in Crookston.

GAME ONE

FIRST INNING –
IN a game that took less than two hours to play (1:52 to be exact) with a great old-fashioned pitchers dual, there weren’t a lot of offensive highlights. UMC started the game going down in 1-2-3 fashion. Mankato struck in the bottom of the inning with a single and the base runner advanced to second base on a passed ball. The next batter lined out, and UMC turned a double play, which turned out to be huge because the next Maverick batter hit a solo home run for a 1-0 lead.

SECOND INNING
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the second inning. Mankato hit another solo home run for a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.

THIRD INNING
UMC’s Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau) reached on a walk to become the first Golden Eagle baserunner. After the next two batters were retired, Wenlsoff stole second base. Sawyer Satrom (Soph. Portland, ND) singled, and the left fielder committed an error that allowed Wensloff to score to bring UMC within a 2-1 deficit. UMC pitcher Jake Osowsnki (Sr. East Grand Forks) settled in and retired the Mavericks in 1-2-3 fashion.

FOURTH INNING
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. Mankato had a one-out double. The next batter grounded out before a Maverick batter was hit by a pitch. Osowski got a big fly out to end the inning, and the Mavericks led 2-1.

FIFTH INNING
With one out, UMC’s Wensloff walked for the second time in the game. Mitch Goodwin singled before a Golden Eagle strikeout. Satrom walked to load the bases before Caden Headlee singled to score two runs to give UMC a 3-2 lead. The first two Maverick batters were retired before a single and a walk. The next batter fouled out and UMC took a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning.

SIXTH INNING
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the the top of the inning. Mankato’s first two batters were retired in the bottom of the inning before they hit a triple. Osowski got a big strikeout to end the inning, and UMC led 3-2.

SEVENTH INNING
Danny Wensloff singled to start the inning, but was caught stealing at second base. The next two batters were retired. As you would expect, Mankato didn’t go down without a fight. The leadoff batter walked. The next batter grounded out before another Maverick reached as he was hit by a pitch. UMC elected to bring in Noah Grafsgaard to pitch and pick up the save. The first batter he faced flew out to right field. The next batter walked to load the bases, but Grafsgaard got the next batter to ground out, and UMC picked up a big 3-2 victory.
