Pope Francis makes first trip outside of Rome in months with visit to women’s prison in Venice

Pope Francis in Astana^ Kazakhstan. September 15. 2022

Pope Francis made his first trip outside Rome in seven months on Sunday, visiting a prison for women in Venice ahead of a mass in the city.  The Pope has not travelled since visiting the French city of Marseille in September 2023.

Amid concerns over his health, the 87-year-old pontiff arrived by helicopter at 8:00am local time to the courtyard of the women’s prison on the island of Giudecca, and greeted one by one the approximately 80 inmates, staff and volunteers. The pope met with female prisoners who are stars of the Vatican’s pavilion at the Biennale contemporary art show, urging the women to rebuild their lives in the first ever papal visit to one of the world’s biggest art gatherings.

The pope encouraged the women to reconstruct their lives “brick upon brick, together, with determination” during their time in prison, saying: “Prison is a harsh reality, and problems such as overcrowding, the lack of facilities and resources, and episodes of violence, give rise to a great deal of suffering there. But it can also become a place of moral and material rebirth.”  The Pontiff called on the prison system to “offer detainees the tools and room for human, spiritual, cultural and professional growth, creating the conditions for their healthy reintegration”.

Pope Francis also toured an art exhibition housed at the prison which examines the daily lives of the inmates through the work of 10 different artists. The exhibit is the Vatican’s entry for this year’s Biennale festival of art, which began last weekend.

Authorities confirmed on Sunday that a four-month-old baby was among two people killed in Oklahoma, in the wake of severe storms and multiple tornadoes that spread across four states. The Oklahoma tornadoes Saturday night were the latest in a series of tornadoes that have battered the Midwest beginning last week and into the weekend.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, at least 30 people were injured and one remains unaccounted for as authorities continued a search and rescue mission Sunday. Emergency officials in Hughes County, Oklahoma, said the baby was one of two people killed in storms that struck Holdenville.

Sunday marked the third day of the severe weather outbreak across the heartland states, with more than 22 million people under threat of violent storms in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Illinois. A powerful pair of twisters that touched down in Nebraska, officials said. Twenty-seven million people remain at risk of severe weather into Sunday, including wind gusts, hail, flood risk and potentially more tornadoes.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said in a statement Sunday: “My prayers are with those who lost loved ones as tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma last night. Thank you to Oklahoma Emergency Management and those who have worked through the night to keep Oklahomans safe and have worked to clear debris and assess damage.”  Stitt declared a state of emergency in a dozen counties.

A destructive tornado also hit Sulfur, Oklahoma, in Murray County, destroying buildings and scattering debris for miles with at least four other people injured in the area.  Tornadoes were also reported Saturday across Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Nebraska, officials said, and according to the National Weather Service there were nearly 120 tornado reports in the last two days.

UMC BASEBALL MOVES INTO 3RD PLACE WITH WIN OVER DULUTH

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Baseball team had an answer every time the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs scored as UMC won the game 13-9 to sweep the three-game series in Crookston.

FIRST INNING
Both teams were retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

SECOND INNING
Duluth was retired in 1-2-3 fashion before the first two Crookston batters were retired. Kobe Senn (Soph. Fargo, ND) singled, but the next batter was retired.

THIRD INNING
The Bulldogs led off the third inning with a single, but they tried to stretch it into a double and was thrown out. The next two batters were retired. Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

FOURTH INNING
Duluth was the first to score when they reached on an error and scored on an error for a 1-0 lead. Crookston’s Caden Headlee (Sr. Fargo, ND) started the inning with a single. After a strikeout, Josh Dykhoff (Soph. Wadena) hit a frozen rope that was no more than 15 feet off the ground, and it went over the right field fence for a two-run home run for a 2-1 lead. Cole Hebl (Fresh. Hillsboro) reached on an error and scored on another error when Senn reached. Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau) followed with a double to score two runs, and UMC led 5-1.

FIFTH INNING
Duluth was retired in 1-2-3 fashion, with the third out coming on an outstanding Superman diving catch by Golden Eagle shortstop Mitch Goodwin (Sr. Prior Lake). The outstanding defense effort seemed to keep the offensive spark going in the bottom of the inning as Crookston had two outs. As UMC has done all season long, they were able to put a two-out rally together. Heble reached on a fielder’s choice, Senn reached on a strikeout and wild pitch, and Danny Wensloff walked to load the bases. Kodi Miller (Jr. Grand Rapids) blasted a shot over the right field fence for a grand slam, and the Golden Eagles led 9-1.

SIXTH INNING
Duluth had an amazing offensive inning, with the first eight batters all getting hits and scoring. The inning started with three singles to load the bases. The next batter doubled in two runs. The next batter doubled to score to more to bring the Bulldogs within a 9-5 deficit. Ethan Cole doubled to score another run. Troy Lynch singled to score a run before Gustafson hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 9-9. UMC made a pitching change, and Max Weber (Jr. St. Paul) came in and retired the first two batters he faced. The next batter doubled, but Weber got a ground out and the Bulldogs were finally retired with the game tied at 9-9.
Crookston responded in the bottom of the inning with a Satrom double. After an out, Giefer singled to score Satrom for a 10-9 lead.

SEVENTH INNING
Duluth was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. Crookston’s Senn was hit by a pitch in the helmet. The next batter struck out before Miller hit a two-run home run for a 12-9 lead. In his last two at-bats, Miller had a grand slam and a two-run home run.

EIGHTH INNING
Noah Grafsgaard (Jr. Devils Lake, ND) came into pitch for Crookston and struck out the first two batters before getting the third to ground out for a 1-2-3 inning.
Crookston’s Giefer led off the inning with a single, and after an out, Angelo Pacyga tripled to score a run for a 13-9 lead.

NINTH INNING
Duluth’s first two batters were retired. After a single, the next batter was retired and UMC won the game 13-9.

UMC moves into third place in the Northern Sun Conference with the win and a St. Cloud State loss to Minot State. UMC improves to 29-14 overall and 23-10 in the NSIC. UMC will host Mary on Tuesday for a doubleheader. Duluth drops to 16-28 overall and 12-23 in the NSIC.

THE JEWELER, A NEW JEWELRY STORE OPENS IN CROOKSTON

It’s been 12 years since Crookston residents have been able to shop at a local Jewelry store. Now, residents can shop locally at The Jeweler located in downtown Crookston at 103 South Main Street.

Crookston native and owner of The Jeweler Bishop Jenson began operations in February of this year. Jenson opened the store because he believes that Crookston has been in high demand to shop locally for wedding bands and other accessories.

“As a young person looking in, it’s hard to keep people here because there are not a lot of resources,” said Jenson, “One of those common resources is a jewelry store for young people to wed. Crookston having a jewelry store gets the ball rolling and provides the opportunity for people to get married here locally.”

Jenson has generations of family ties in Northwest Minnesota dating back to the 1850s for example; his great-grandfather helped settle the Polk County region with Hagen Farms in East Grand Forks. “My family has always induced activities and economics to the region,” said Jenson, “To be able to do that today, it means a great deal to me.”

The Jeweler provides services such as on-site repair for rings, watches, and chains. Jenson described the storefront addition as an “add-on bonus”; originally, the store was meant mainly for repair and maintenance. The store offers many items, such as colored gemstones, loose diamonds for engagement mounting, pearls, graded coinage, watches, and more.

This is an exciting time in Crookston for those looking to shop locally for engagement and wedding accessories. It will also give locals the opportunity to take their items in for repair in town rather than travel. The Jeweler has come up with its own slogan, which states, ‘Something new, something shiny, something is waiting for you at The Jeweler.’

Business hours at the Jeweler are Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
