WASHINGTON SCHOOL TO HOST ANNUAL KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP FOR INCOMING STUDENTS

Washington Elementary School is gearing up for its annual Kindergarten Round-Up, which will take place on Wednesday, April 10, at Washington School from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This event is intended for children who have turned five years old by September 1, 2024.  It is free for all incoming students and parents to attend. “What we will do is for the children to come to the classroom for a bit,” said Washington Kindergarten Teacher Monica Parenteau. “They will have an opportunity to see what kindergarten rooms look like. We’ll sing a song and do a story. While the children are with us, they will stay in the gym and talk to our school principal, Mrs. Oliver.”

The parents and students will also have the chance to learn about the different programs that Washington School will offer during the year and meet their potential teachers. Every student that attends will receive a free “tool kit,” which includes different academic tools that will help prepare the kids for kindergarten, such as number lines, scissors, and writing utensils.

Washington School staff is encouraging parents to bring their child’s original state-issued birth certificate and immunization records, and if the child participated in Early Childhood Screening in a district other than Crookston, to bring those records as well. The reason to bring these documents is so Washington School can process those documents and get the children registered for Kindergarten as soon as possible.

Washington School Kindergarten Teacher Renee Tangquist explains that this event benefits incoming kindergarten students and will give them experience before attending their first day of class. “I think it’s a time where it gets them excited about coming to school,” said Washington Kindergarten Teacher Renee Tangquist, “They get to see other students their age and talk about school and look forward to the rest of the summer. Many of them think it’s already time to start school after they’ve been to roundup.”

Registration for Kindergarten Roundup will begin at 3:15 p.m. (fifteen minutes before the start). Again, this is a free event for those parents looking to register their child for kindergarten.

POLK COUNTY HOMEOWNERS RECIEVE PROPERTY TAX STATEMENTS

The Polk County property tax statements were released and mailed to all homeowners within the county on Friday, March 29, and began reaching mailboxes on Monday, April 1. This year, approximately 30,000 statements were issued.

Along with the 2024 tax statements, the 2025 home valuation notices were mailed to Polk County homeowners just a few days prior. “We need to make sure that (constituents) separate these statements that were mailed out,” said Executive Director of Polk County Property Records Sam Melbye. “From the valuation notices that were mailed the week before. The valuation notices were received March 27-29. Those are the values for the 2025 taxes.”

If property owners have questions and concerns regarding home valuations, they can appeal or check the information to make sure it’s correct. You can contact the Polk County Assessor’s Office. “In April, there will be a local board of appeal and equalization meetings,” said Melbye, “This is where the property owner can go in and talk to either our Assessor’s Office or if your local jurisdiction has their meeting, you can talk to the township board, and city councils hold their meetings on these, where they can appeal their value.” If homeowners cannot agree in their local jurisdictions, they may appeal to the Polk County Board in June.

The valuation notices received last week by Polk County residents state the actual value of their homes in 2025. All home valuations were certified on January 2, 2024, for taxes payable in 2025. Many may question why the value of their homes is increasing at such a high rate, as well as their property taxes. Melbye further explained that each county in the state simply follows the amount of home sales through each calendar year, determining the new value. “What we do is we follow the sales,” said Melbye, “The sale study that we would’ve done for these values would’ve been from October 2022 through September of ’23; Sales of homes, commercial properties, and normally it’s within an area or a township. Crookston sales for Crookston values, East Grand Forks sales for East Grand Forks values, etc.”

The due dates for property tax payments are also listed on the property tax statements-

  • May 15, 2024- First Half Taxes due for residential, seasonal residential recreation, and agricultural properties.
  • October 15, 2024- Second Half Taxes due for residential and seasonal residential recreation.
  • November 15, 2024- Second Half taxes due for agricultural properties.

Greyson Ecker reached on a fielder’s choice, and the Cougars got the out at home. Bases were still loaded for Lucas Miller, who drew a walk to score a run, and the Pirates trailed 3-1. Bases were still loaded, and Lucas Perala blasted a line drive to the right-center field gap for a stand-up triple that scored three runs, and the Pirates took a 4-3 lead. Parker Kelly reached on an error on the first baseman, and Perala scored on the play for a 5-3 lead. The following two batters struck out, and Crookston took a 5-3 lead into the second inning.

SECOND INNING

Spaeth walked, and McCraven singled to score a run. Fassino walked, and Cannon Anderson hit a line drive to right field. Reese advanced to second base on a wild pitch but thought he heard somebody yell get back, so he went back to first and was tagged out. Contreras walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, and over to third on another passed ball, but the next Pirate batter was retired, and the Pirate threat was over, and the game was tied at 8-8.

SIXTH INNING
ABW regained the lead in the sixth inning as Lance Kritzberger walked and stole second base. Fetting and Casper Kritzberger walked to load the bases. Spaeth singled to score two runs, and McCraven followed with another single to score a run for an 11-8 lead.
Crookston answered in the bottom of the inning with an Ecker walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He moved over to third on another wild pitch, and you guessed it, he scored on another wild pitch. Miller walked, Perala was intentionally walked, and Kelly walked to load the bases. Fee hit into a fielder’s choice, and the Cougars got the out at home, but the bases were still loaded. Nolan Cassavant followed with a deep fly ball to left field to score a run, and the Pirates trailed 11-10.

The tying run was at first base, and the winning run was at the plate when Fee hit a ground ball back to the pitcher for the final out of the game, and ABW held on for a 14-11 victory.

Crookston drops to 0-1 on the year and will travel to Red Lake Falls to take on the Red Lake County Rebels on Friday, April 12, a game you can hear on KROX Radio.  Ada-Borup-West improves to 1-0 on the year.

Paige Shwaluk (Sr. Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) used a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over to put runners on second and third with only one out. Then, Whitnee Curry (Jr. Lincoln, NE) drove in a run with a base hit to make it 3-1 with St. Cloud State still in the lead. UMC couldn’t drive in any more runs in the inning.

In the fourth inning, the teams went three up and three down again before St. Cloud State cashed in on a three-run home run to break open a 6-1 lead.
