UMC HANDS OUT AWARDS AT 2024 STUDENT AWARDS CEREMONY

The University of Minnesota Crookston recently held its annual Student Awards Ceremony in Bede Ballroom and honored a number of individuals for their hard work and dedication over the school year. Among those recognized were UMC Students of the Year – Jackie Calderon, Tristan Morneault, and Gracie Rouland.

The UMC Student of the Year award goes to a junior or senior who best demonstrates the skills and commitment required to succeed in college, business, and life while exhibiting Golden Eagle Pride, professionalism, and strong work ethic, all while excelling in academics.

In their Student of the Year nominations:

Jackie Calderon was described as making the most of her time on campus, taking every opportunity that came her way. She’s a member of the NCAA soccer team and a representative of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Calderon is a double major student in marketing and communications, and has had internships with University Relations, Alumni and Donor Relations, and Athletics. She champions diversity, equity, and belonging and has shared her story during Hispanic Heritage Month and in first-generation spotlight features. Calderon has advocated for accessibility by coordinating efforts to make sure the sidewalks on campus are ADA-compliant and has shared a recent petition and photos with Chancellor Mary Holz-Clause. She has also expanded her reach into the community and beyond by assisting with alumni events and efforts, and coordinating the opening event for the university’s leased space downtown. Calderon is also a member of the Campus Advisory and Advancement Board (CAAB) and Campus Art Committee, plus she recently worked to create a comprehensive marketing plan for the City of Crookston’s Parks and Recreation department. She has balanced all of her co-curricular endeavors while maintaining exceptional academic standing and doing it all with steadfast kindness and integrity, said the Chancellor.

Tristan Morneault was described as taking the entire Golden Eagle student experience since his first day on campus as a freshman and making an impact on many groups on and off campus. He has consistently excelled academically while being a dual sport athlete and maintaining leadership positions in various clubs and organizations. Specifically, Morneault has served in leadership roles in the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, Sports & Recreation Management Club, and Golden Eagle Entertainment. He also served as a Student Orientation Staff leader for two years and as a student ambassador for the Office of Admissions. You may have also seen Morneault working at the campus Info Desk. Morneault has helped organize mental health initiatives, blood drives, and donation drives for children within the community. He also volunteered to sandbag when the river was at a high level two years ago. His nominator emphasized his class, poise, and personality, stating that he exemplifies what it means to be a Golden Eagle. The Chancellor mentioned he is quite personable and always takes time to engage in meaningful conversations with faculty, staff, and his fellow students. Morneault has played a critical role in the recruitment and retention of student leaders and will leave a legacy for the leaders he has guided.

Gracie Rouland was described as a detail-oriented, positive, passionate, committed, and natural leader. She has dedicated her time to the success of her fellow students through leadership roles, including Student Orientation Staff specialist, acting as a peer mentor, academic success coach, and academic peer tutor. Rouland has been involved in Golden Eagle Entertainment, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and Ag Arama. She’s been employed in the campus mail room and as a student ambassador for the Office of Admissions. Whether it’s a short interaction in the mail room or long hours preparing for the Welcome Weekend event, Rouland has been a joy while interacting with students, and they can attest to her kindness and warmth. She consistently goes above and beyond, is comfortable, and makes others feel welcome on campus. Rouland has extended her reach around campus and beyond, representing the Crookston campus at the State Capitol during the University of Minnesota Day at the Capitol and has frequently volunteered her time representing the campus in a positive light. CROOKSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO PERFORM TWO CONCERTS THIS WEEK

The Crookston Public School will have its students present a high school orchestra spring concert today, May 6. Then, following this, on May 8, there will be a middle school music festival at the University of Minnesota Crookston. Detailing the events, Orchestra Director Haley Ellis states “We will be putting on a show with pieces that we have been working on for the past semester as well as some solo and ensemble pieces from students that have performed at contest in Fergus Falls a few weeks ago”.

The Crookston High School Orchestra had previously got a superior score on two of the pieces that will be performed at the Spring Concert later today. Another notable piece being played is Richard Meyer’s Subterranean.

When asked if she had any final words of motivation for the students and for the community members to attend, Ellis mentions, “Well, I am just so proud of these students. They have worked their tails off and are just such a family”, Ellis continues, “It’s such a joy to be able to come to class every day and work with these students.” Regarding community members, Ellis says, “I encourage people to come because they have put in this work, and they deserve an audience.” Ellis says, “They have done so well, and if you come to different concerts throughout the years when they were fourth graders up until now, you get all the different kinds of music and different sounds. You can see how they’ve grown”.

Ole Miss opens investigation of racial taunts at pro-Gaza demonstrations

Entrance to the University of Mississippi in Oxford^ MS

The University of Mississippi announced they have opened an investigation into reports of students making hostile and racial gestures toward Black students on campus.

The University’s chancellor, Glenn F. Boyce sent a letter to students and staff noting that Ole Miss leaders were aware of behaviors that were “offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable, including actions that conveyed hostility and racist overtones” at Thursday’s protest, with NBC reporting that “statements were made at the demonstration on our campus Thursday that were offensive and inappropriate”.  Boyce wrote: “While student privacy laws prohibit us from commenting on any specific student, we have opened one student conduct investigation. We are working to determine whether more cases are warranted.”

A video posted online with many noting that the pro-Palestinian demonstrators appeared to be a multiracial group but were surrounded by a mostly white group of Ole Miss counterprotesters taunting them at a pro-Gaza rally on campus.  The one confrontation which drew particular offense showed a Black female graduate student on the protest side of a barricade went up to two young men to record the group as they yelled in her direction, and a man can be seen jumping up and down and appearing to make a noise to imitate an ape at the woman.

In a statement provided to The Independent, a spokesperson for Ole Miss said: “Statements were made at the demonstration on our campus Thursday that were offensive and inappropriate. We cannot comment specifically about that video, but the university is looking into reports about specific actions. Any actions that violate university policy will be met with appropriate action.”

See Beyoncé and daughter Blue Ivy Carter in the trailer for ‘Lion King’ prequel ‘Mufasa’

Beyonce at the World premiere of 'The Lion King' held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood^ USA on July 9^ 2019.

12-year-old Blue Ivy Carter will join her famous mom, Beyoncé, in the upcoming ‘Lion King’ prequel film, ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’.

The film’s first trailer has been released, in which Blue Ivy voices the role of Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala (to be voiced again by Donald Glover and Beyoncé, who also appeared in the 2019 film). Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen, who previously played Timon and Pumba, are also set to reprise their roles in ‘Mufasa’.

‘Mufasa’ director Barry Jenkins told Good Morning America it was “really special” to see the mother-daughter duo at work: “I was so glad that both Beyoncé and Blue Ivy were down to do [Mufasa], and watching them work together was just really special. Beyoncé is this larger-than-life figure, but when she’s working with her daughter, when she’s in the room with her daughter, she’s a mom first. So much of that energy bled into the film.”

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ hits theaters on December 20; you can take a look at the trailer – here.
