Federal Reserve leaves interest rates steady noting ‘lack of further progress’ on inflation

Fed Chair Jerome Powell via CNBC Television YouTube Channel^ on a Macbook Pro

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve voted to keep interest rates steady and postponed anticipated rate cuts stemming from elevated inflation across the U.S., which remains above the central bank’s 2% threshold.

The Federal reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee said in a statement that the central bank left interest rates for overnight bank borrowing within a range of 5.25%-5.5%: “The economic outlook is uncertain, and the Committee remains highly attentive to inflation risks.”  In addition, with CPI inflation at 3.5%, the FOMC said, “In recent months, there has been a lack of further progress toward the Committee’s 2% inflation objective.”

Inflation has dropped dramatically from a high point of 9.1% annually to 2.7% as measured by the personal consumption expenditures, or PCE index. However, it remains more than a percentage point higher than the Fed’s target rate of 2%.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said at a press conference in Washington D.C. on Wednesday: “So far the data has not given us that greater confidence. It is likely that gaining such greater confidence will take longer than previously expected.” While the possibility of an interest rate hike in the coming months was raised (before the central bank moves forward with cuts), Powell said: “It is unlikely that the next policy rate move will be a hike.”

PIRATE BOYS GOLF FINISH 9TH OUT OF 17 TEAMS AT BEMIDJI

The Crookston Pirate Boys golf team finished ninth place out of 17 teams at the Boys Section 8 Preview meet with a team score of 347. Fertile-Beltrami won the meet with a 327, three strokes better than Hawley.  “I think today was one of our better team outings of the year,” said Pirate Coach Steve Kofoed.

Section 8A and 8AA Boys and Girls golf tournaments are held at Bemidji Town and Country Club, so it was a mix of Section 8A and 8AA teams competing.

Crookston was led by Garrett Fischer as the sophomore shot an 81, good for 10th place individually. Fischer had two birdies, nine pars, and four bogies for his best scores. “He hit the ball great but had a couple of unforced errors which hurt him on a few holes,” said Coach Kofoed.

Evan Shockman had the best round of his career as he turned in an 85. The sophomore had seven pars, nine bogies, and two double bogies for a consistent round. “Evan had a very good round,” said Coach Kofoed.
Tate Hamre had a solid round with an 89. Hamre had five pars and 11 bogies for his best scores. He also had a double bogey, and the one hole that hurt his score a bit was a quadruple bogey. “Tate had a great round going until the final hole or so,” said Coach Kofoed.
Brannon Tangquist turned in a 92. The senior had six pars and five bogies for his top scores.
David Dauksavage had one of his best rounds of the year while turning in a 99. The sophomore had one par and eight bogies for his top scores. “David breaking 100 in his first look at Bemidji Town and Country Club was awesome,” said Coach Kofoed.
Ashton Shockman putted well but struggled with the drive and just couldn’t lock it in and turned in a 104. “Ashton was the only one that was really frustrated,” said Coach Kofoed. “He struggled to hit the ball but was pleased with how he was putting. Feeling good about putting is the number one factor at Bemidji, so I could see him dropping 15 strokes on Monday.

THE CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL TRAP SEASON IS UNDERWAY

The Crookston High School Trapshooting season is well underway, with a roster of 35 students this year, ranging from seventh through 12th grade. This year’s group includes 12 seniors. First-year head coach Randy Prudhomme leads the team.

Prudhomme said his first year has been good so far. “It’s pretty good, a little nervous at the beginning, you know, new coach, they are always going to have different coaching styles and different expectations, but the kids have really turned around, and they adapted real fast,” said Prudhomme, “They were like oh okay never heard of it explained that way and some it helped.”

The Trap team has found plenty of early success in their season. “It’s going good; kids are adapting with a new coach. Picking up different coaching styles, the kids are doing good” Prudhomme, “It seems they are holding or improving. That’s all you can ask for. If I start seeing your slide, I’ll say, hey, let’s take a look and see what’s happening, but everyone is doing well and can’t be any happier now”.

The Trap team scored very well throughout the season’s early stages, with two students shooting a perfect score of 25 for 25. Tate Hamre and Wyatt Wilkens were the students who accomplished the feat.

The Crookston High School Trap team will have remaining competitions for weeks two through five here in Crookston. Following those competitions, on June 1, the team will be heading to Greenbush Middle River for the Gator Clay Busters Invite. The final competition will occur on June 13, when we head to Alexandria for the final state-wide shoot.

CROOKSTON SENIORS CAN RECEIVE FREE HOME SURVEYS FOR CARBON MONOXIDE TESTING

The Crookston Fire Department now encourages senior residents in Crookston to participate in free home surveys and testing for Carbon Monoxide with the Crookston Fire Department.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, and invisible gas. Symptoms of CO poisoning can include headaches, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and disorientation. Crookston Fire Fighter Garett Bengston commented about the dangers of the gas but also where it stems from within homes. “Primarily, Carbon monoxide will be in the homes that contain a furnace or a water heater,” said Bengston, “It’s going to be a unit that uses that natural gas, so it’s burning.”

Those who are encouraged to do the home surveys may receive free installation and a new carbon monoxide detector. To qualify for the free service, you must be at least 60 years of age, reside in the Crookston city limits, and own the home in which you live. “The purpose of this program is to ensure the safety of our senior residents,” said Bengston, “By providing and installing the carbon monoxide detector in their home with no cost to them. This is something I feel like we need to do, and that’s take care of our senior citizens. They’re our heart and soul, and we wouldn’t be here without them.”

The Crookston Area Community Fund recently awarded the Fire Department with grant funding in which the department will use a portion of the grant to fund this project. The funds will go toward the purchase of new Carbon Monoxide monitors and the installation of the devices.

Call the Fire Department at 218-281-4584 and request a survey to be done at your home. The firefighter on shift will come to your home and check to see that your detectors are working properly. If your detector is not working properly, the firefighter will either install new batteries or a new Carbon monoxide detector. The new detector comes with a 10-year sealed battery as well.
