MIKE CHRISTOPHERSON FILES CANDIDACY FOR DISTRICT 1B REPRESENATIVE

Longtime Crookston resident Mike Christopherson, unanimously endorsed by the DFL, officially filed his candidacy on May 21, 2024 for Minnesota House of Representatives District 1B. In early May, he was nominated by former Senator Roger Moe at the Polk/Red Lake County DFL Endorsing Convention in Crookston.

“I am excited and honored to receive this endorsement,” Christopherson said. “I’m also eager to get out in District 1B and talk to people about what they’d like to see happen at the legislature that could do some good for them as well as our region.”

Christopherson, 54, and his wife, Michelle, have been married for almost 28 years. They have two adult sons, Ethan and Trey. Michelle has worked for the University of Minnesota Crookston for almost 25 years, serving in a variety of leadership roles. She is currently the director of Outreach and Engagement on campus. Ethan is a senior admissions counselor at UMN Crookston, and Trey, after starting with First Community Credit Union in Crookston, recently transferred to FCCU’s Grand Forks branch, where he is a business associate.

Christopherson earned a bachelor of science degree in communications/broadcast journalism from Moorhead State University in 1992. He spent the bulk of his professional career as a reporter and then managing editor at the Crookston Times, with two stints at the newspaper, from 1994 to 2001, and again from 2004 to 2021. Between those two stints at the Times, he worked in the Service Learning program at UMN Crookston and was also a teaching specialist on campus. Feeling that corporate media’s mission was drifting too far from the importance of small-town, local journalism, Christopherson resigned from the Times in the summer of 2021. Since October of that year, he has been the full-time substitute teacher at Fisher Public School and holds a Tier 1 Minnesota teaching license in 5th-12th grade Communication, Arts and Literature.

Following his endorsement, Christopherson and his team have been busy ordering a variety of campaign materials. Facebook, Instagram and X campaign social media accounts have been launched, as well as a website, mikechristopherson.com. There, visitors can learn more about Christopherson and his stances on various issues important to residents of District 1B, as well as submit donations towards his campaign. An account, “Christopherson for House 1B,” has also been opened at First Community Credit Union.

While he’s being advised by local and area DFL leaders and officials, Christopherson has also formed a campaign committee, chaired by area farmer and Crookston School Board member Tim Dufault.

So why is Christopherson seeking the Minnesota House District 1B seat as a DFLer?

“Because I love it here and I’m a proud Minnesotan,” he stated. “I want to be a voice of reason in St. Paul, and a champion for the things that truly matter to us in northwest Minnesota.”

Some of those things include:

– Economic growth and a strong, stable, reliable, well-trained and adequately compensated workforce;

– investments in public schools so that they are equipped to prepare young people from all cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds for successful futures;

– public infrastructure investments that are more proactive than reactive;

– the vitality of rural Minnesota and communities not just maintaining their populations but growing them;

– caring for and supporting our growing elderly friends and neighbors;

– strong, stable family farms and ag operations, and thriving agribusinesses;

– accessible, exceptional healthcare, whether it’s our physical or mental health;

and,

– the importance of our great outdoors and Minnesota’s natural resources.

Christopherson is hitting the campaign trail, and, on Saturday, June 1, he and members of his team will be at the Small Town Saturday event in Climax and also at the Erskine Water Carnival parade.

In his spare time, Christopherson loves spending time at Maple Lake, where his parents, Mark and Kathy Christopherson, reside. He also enjoys golfing, playing pool, reading, listening to music, standing around backyard bonfires, following Minnesota’s professional sports teams and the Gophers, and obsessing over fantasy football.

RNC accuses Secret Service of ignoring security concerns around party convention in Milwaukee

United States Secret Service (USSS) Uniformed Division patrol car at the entrance to The Eclipse park in-front of The White House.

The Republican National Committee is accusing the US Secret Service of ignoring its security concerns surrounding the party’s July convention in Milwaukee, warning that the agency was putting the event at risk. The convention, slated for July 15-18 in Milwaukee, includes a perimeter that encompasses a nearby park, Pere Marquette.

The Trump campaign sent a letter on Thursday to U.S. Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle, demanding she fix a “critical flaw” in the security perimeter of this summer’s Republican National Convention, claiming that attendees’ safety is at risk as protesters plan to descend on the area. Per CNN, the RNC has raised concerns over the proximity of planned protest zones to the pathway that convention attendees must walk to access the venue. The party has proposed an alternative location for the First Amendment Zone that would ensure attendees would not have to walk past protesters.

Todd Steggerda, counsel to the Republican National Committee, wrote in the letter that the Secret Service is ignoring their concerns and multiple attempts of outreach about adjusting the security perimeter, adding that the security environment around the convention was “rapidly deteriorating” and demanding action:  “To date, the local USSS team has been unresponsive to the RNC’s reasonable proposal, as set out in my April 26 letter, to alleviate these safety risks through a very modest alteration of the Perimeter — namely, to expand a small portion of the Security Perimeter approximately one block to the East to encapsulate the Park … Rather than dissipating, the overall security climate has worsened significantly over the past month of the USSS’s inaction,” Steggerdas said, adding that Cheatle’s “failure to act now to prevent these unnecessary and certain risks will imperil tens of thousands of convention attendees.”

Steggerda cited statements made by organizers for the Coalition to March on the RNC 2024 suggesting protesters may ignore law enforcement orders related to where they can demonstrate. In addition, many top Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have reached out to the Secret Service to discuss their concerns. Said Steggerda: “With less than two months before the convention and even less time before the USSS finalizes the plan, it is imperative you take personal and immediate steps to fix this unacceptable flaw in the design of the security perimeter.’

Bipartisan border bill fails to advance in Senate for second time

Migrants from Venezuela cross the Rio Grande to surrender to the border patrol with the intention of requesting asylum in the United States.

A bipartisan border security bill failed to advance on the Senate floor on Thursday for a second time. Republicans first blocked earlier this year after former President Donald Trump came out publicly against it; the measure fell short in a 43 to 50 vote, which need the 60 votes needed to advance in the upper chamber.

The bill, negotiated by a bipartisan group of senators, was already rejected by most Republicans in February when it was linked to a foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other US allies. Republicans have argued that the president already has the power to stop the flow of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border, claiming that the bipartisan deal to expand his authority would do little. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Thursday in a floor speech that “unfortunately, it doesn’t matter what law is on the books if the administration is not going to enforce the ones that already exist.”

Democrats, on the other hand, have attempted to use Republicans’ opposition to the bill in order to shift public opinion in their favor, as voters have been critical of President Biden’s handling of immigration. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday afternoon that “the contrast between Democrats and Republicans is clear today and will be even clearer in November. Democrats want to fix the border and get something done. Republicans want to give speeches, let the border fester and do absolutely nothing to fix the problem.”

In a statement after Thursday’s vote, President Biden said Republicans “put partisan politics ahead of our country’s national security .. Congressional Republicans do not care about securing the border or fixing America’s broken immigration system. If they did, they would have voted for the toughest border enforcement in history,” Biden said, adding that he is “committed to taking action to address our broken immigration system.”

Cassie Ventura breaks silence, thanks supporters after Diddy assault video surfaces

Cassie Ventura at the 2017 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York^ NY

Cassie Ventura is speaking out for the first time following the release of a 2016 video that showed her being physically abused by ex-boyfriend, Sean “Diddy” Combs.

On Thursday, May 23, Ventura thanked her supporters in a statement released on Instagram, expressing her thanks “for all of the love and support from my family, friends, strangers and those I have yet to Meer” after footage of her being physically assaulted by Combs, 54, went public last week. Ventura, 37, continued: “The outpouring of love has created a place for my younger self to settle and feel safe now, but this is only the beginning.  Domestic Violence is THE issue. It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become. With a lot of hard work, I am better today, but I will always be recovering from my past.”

Cassie also voiced her support for others experiencing abuse and asked people to do the same: “Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to take this matter seriously. My only ask is that EVERYONE open your heart to believing victims the first time. It takes a lot of heart to tell the truth out of a situation that you were powerless in. I offer my hand to hose that are still living in fear. Reach out to your people, don’t cut them off. No one should carry this weight alone .. The healing journey is never ending, but this support means everything to me. Thank you.”

CNN published a surveillance video May 17 that shows Combs appearing to grab, shove, drag and kick Ventura in a hallway of the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles in March 2016. Combs apologized in a video posted to social media, but did not mention Ventura by name, saying in part:  “My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted when I did it. I’m disgusted now. I went and I sought professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.”

Diddy and Cassie dated on and off from 2007 to 2018. Combs previously denied Ventura’s allegations of assault after she filed a lawsuit Nov. 16, 2023 that accused him of rape and years of abuse; the suit was settled one day later, but in the months that followed, multiple alleged victims have spoken out against Diddy, in which. he denied all the allegations. Ventura said at the time of the settlement: “I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control. I want to thank my family, fans and lawyers for their unwavering support.”

BCA RELEASES CROOKSTON POLICE-INVOLVED SHOOTING

University of North Dakota Forensic Pathology has identified the man killed May 16 in a use-of-force incident in Crookston. According to the forensic pathologist, Andrew Scott Dale, 35, of Crookston died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified two Crookston police officers and one Polk County sheriff’s deputy who used force during this incident.

• Officer Nick Fladland fired his department handgun. He has five years of law enforcement experience and is on critical incident leave.

• Officer Alex Rudnik deployed his Taser. He has 10 years of law enforcement experience.

• Deputy Matt Benge fired 40 mm foam less-lethal rounds. He has five years of law enforcement experience.

According to the preliminary investigation, just before 1 a.m. on May 16, the officers came upon Dale walking in the road with a hatchet. They made contact with him, and he ran toward them, still holding the hatchet. Rudnik and Benge used less-lethal force, but it was ineffective. Fladland fired his department handgun, striking Dale multiple times. The officers provided life-saving care, but Dale later died at the hospital.

BCA crime scene personnel recovered a hatchet and cartridge casings at the scene. Body-worn cameras captured portions of the incident. BCA agents are reviewing all available video as part of the active investigation.

The Crookston Police Department asked the BCA to investigate this incident. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without a charging recommendation to the Polk County Attorney’s Office for review.
