SPORTS FEEVER – May 23, 2024

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

It was a pretty busy week for Crookston High School Activities Director Nate Lubarski as he made two head basketball coaching hires.  Lubarski said the interviews went well, and having the Middle School Principal, Cierra Roebuck Hangsleben, in the interviews was a big help. Information on the two new head coaches are below.

Bruce Elliot Erdmann has been named the new Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball coach, pending school board approval at their meeting on Monday.

Erdmann graduated from Crookston High School in 2001, where he played football, basketball, and golf. He was part of a Section 8AA basketball runner-up team. He played college basketball at Dana College in Nebraska, a member of the GPAC Conference in the NAIA. Bruce was a 1,000-point scorer by his junior season and was named to the GPAC All-Conference team.

Erdmann coached 9th-grade boys’ basketball at Omaha Westside School before taking an assistant coaching job at Mayville State University for the 2006-07 season. The Comets made it to the National Championship game under the guidance of Craig Smith, who is now the head Men’s Basketball Coach at Utah.
Erdmann was a Graduate Assistant coach at the University of Mary for the 2007-8 and 2008-9 seasons before returning to Mayville State, where he was an assistant coach for two years.

He moved back to Crookston to farm with his father. He coached eighth grade for two years and coached Junior Varsity for two years under Greg Garmen.

Erdmann is married to Andrea, who was head girls basketball coach at Bismarck High School in 2009 when they won the State Championship. They have four children, Isaac-13, Otto-10, Archie-8, and Hope-4.

Bruce is currently the Crookston Youth Basketball Association President and has been coaching in the CYBA for several years.

Kory Baril has been named the new Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball Coach, pending school board approval on Monday evening. Baril has also accepted a job to teach Social Studies at Crookston High School.

Baril is a 2007 Warroad High School graduate. He attended Bemidji State University and received his Education Degree. He student-taught in Red Lake Falls and was a volunteer coach for the Red Lake County Boys’ Basketball team. After graduating from Bemidji State, he took a job at Red Lake County Central as a Social Studies teacher. He helped coach boys’ basketball for the Red Lake County Rebels under Hall of Fame Coach Steve Philion. For the last four years, he has been an assistant coach for the Red Lake County Central Mustang Girls Basketball team.

Baril has coached football from elementary to an assistant coach over the past 10 years in the Red Lake County Rebel football program under Coach Brian Remick.  He is also an assistant track and field coach for the Red Lake County Rebels.

Baril said he is excited about the opportunity to be in the Crookston School District and be the Head Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball coach.

Congratulations to Minnewaska Area on becoming the first Spring Sports Section Champions as they beat East Grand Forks in a fantastic match 4-3 in the Section 8A Championship. What a run by East Grand Forks…they won their first two matches 4-3 and lost 4-3. I guess we could call the Green Wave the cardiac kids this year. Most of their matches were close all season long.

I have received some emails the last week and the 8AA basketball seems to be the hot topic once again. Every email, call, or in-person conversation from those up north has been Thank you for speaking up for the North teams that seem to get screwed.  A reoccurring topic was taking the rotation of Crookston and Moorhead away and just going to Moorhead or Detroit Lakes shows a lack of caring about the north teams like Roseau, Warroad, Thief River Falls, etc.

I LOVE how they do the volleyball championship. It is moved to a neutral site as close to the middle of the two schools as possible. Maybe something like that for basketball should be used for the championship, especially with the lower crowd numbers and the availability of streaming, where casual fans can now stay home and watch the game from home.

DL could easily be used. Crookston High School or UMC, Glyndon, Perham, Barnesville, etc, There are so many great and spacious gyms that could be used. It really would be cool to try out.

I also suggest a North/South in the first round, then seed the 8 teams left and play at the high seed on a Saturday. Travel for anybody won’t be an issue since it is a Saturday. Again, just an idea that might work. But there might be a reason why that wouldn’t work.

We can talk more about this when things are slower in the summer but any suggestions are welcome.

I have talked to several people familiar with the Section 8AA golf situation this year. It sounds like Bemidji Town and Country Club was unsure if they would want to host 8A and 8AA golf tournaments, especially the 8AA tournament in the first week of June.  Being a business, they have to keep their members happy too and June is usually prime golf time, especially for the retired members.

There was some delay in decision making by the course and that coused issues figuring out if they would play. That has sparked a search for a new course (rightfully so).  That is on the backburner and will be decided later as they are worried about this year.

One thing that still doesn’t make sense to me is the dropping of sub-sections, but that really isn’t a huge deal.

I have heard some good news. It sounds like next year the 8AA golf tournament could have Boys one day, girls the second day, and the boys and girls that make the cut play on day 3. I think that is great, and kudos to those who came up with that idea. I like it (not that it matters what the heck I think). So, some good is coming out of all of this. All the same, kids will be advancing most years, so a sub-section or a first-day cut at sections won’t make a difference most years, so I think that is a great plan.

One thing Region 6A has to work on is communication. While the MSHSL has put the Region in a tough spot with their constant changing of things, Coaches and A.D.s had no idea what was going on when the season started, and to me, that is 100 percent unacceptable. If they had reached out to all the coaches and A.D.s and said something like, ” FYI – here is the situation with the Section 8AA golf tournament…..blah blah blah.” I am sure the coaches and A.D.’s could have teamed up and figured something out with everyone on the same page.

Example of communication: Region 8A’s Todd Selk (and Jim Weinzerl) are great at communicating with the media to let them know what is going on. With all the Softball and Tennis changes, I think I received a total of five emails, a couple of text messages, and a phone call with changes. That is so appreciated) he is/was great and important for us to get the information out.

Anyway, some things seem to be much better with 8AA golf. The first day will be tough this year, but I am looking forward to next year’s format.

JOKES

“Mr. Clark, I’m afraid I have bad news,” the doctor told his anxious patient. “You only have six months to live.”

The man sat in stunned silence for several minutes. Regaining his composure, he apologetically announced that he had no medical insurance. “I can’t possibly pay you in that time,” he said.

“OK,” the doctor said. “let’s make it nine months.”

An elderly couple visits their grown-up grandson one night. While in the bathroom, Grandpa discovers a bottle of Viagra in his grandson’s medicine cupboard.

“I don’t think you should take one of those,” says the grandson when his grandpa asks him about them: “They’re pretty expensive.”

“How much?” asks the old timer.

“$20 a pill,” replies the grandson.

“I’d still like to try one,” says the old man: “Before we go in the morning I’ll leave the money under the pillow in the guest room.”

The next day the grandson goes into the guest room, and lifts the pillow to find $120. Puzzled, he calls his grandpa. “Grandpa, I told you the pills were $20 each!” he says.

“I know,” says the old man: “The extra $100 is from your grandma!”

CROOKSTON WILL HOST THE SECTION 8A BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

The City of Crookston is set to host the 2024 Section 8A High School Boys Baseball Tournament in June.

Crookston will host the final three days of the tournament, starting on June 1. The semi-final will be played on Tuesday, June 4, and the championship game will be played on Thursday, June 6. All games will be held at Jim Karn Field. Seeding for the tournament will be held this weekend.

Hosting the section tournament will be an excellent opportunity for Crookston. “It’s a very high honor in my mind, especially in my field of work. We got the opportunity to host our girls’ high school hockey sections here in Crookston, and now we got offered to host a boys’ high school baseball section, so two sections in one year,” Crookston Park & Rec. Director Jake Solberg. “It’s just very important for our community; it’s going to bring people from around our area into our community.”

Crookston looks to host more tournaments in the coming years. “Baseball is a lot of playoff games just to get even the section tournament, so good luck to all teams and safe travels to everyone that is coming to our community,” added Solberg.

Sheldon Ellsworth Bolstad – OBIT

Sheldon Ellsworth Bolstad (74) Grand Forks, ND passed away April 1, 2024 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND with loving family by his side.

Sheldon was born Thursday, April 28, 1949 at Bethesda Hospital Crookston MN to parents Alvin E Bolstad and Evelyn M (Skiple) Bolstad, Fertile, MN during a Partial Solar Eclipse.

Sheldon grew up on the family farm east of Fertile, MN frequently sharing fond and lasting memories of his childhood. He attended school in Fertile, graduating with the Class of 1967. Following high school he attended a two year Horticulture program at the University of MN Technical School in Crookston MN, graduating with an AA degree. Sheldon enlisted in the US Navy in September of 1969 and went to Recruit Training Command (boot camp) and Machinery Repairman “A” Service School in San Diego, California. Upon Completion of Service School, Sheldon transferred to Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, MS. He served as a Machinery Repairman aboard the USS Yosemite (AD-19) and participated in the repair of destroyers and other vessels in Mayport, FL.   Following his Honorable Discharge, he returned to Fertile and enrolled at Moorhead State Technical College. He graduated with a two year degree in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration and shortly thereafter purchased Einar Olson’s plumbing and heating business in Fertile.

Sheldon married Deborah Page on September 3, 1976 at Beltrami United Methodist Church. They made their home in Fertile, MN and within two years, the mountains of Washington State were calling. Sheldon sold his businesses; Fertile Refrigeration and Plumbing as well as Northern Industrial Heating more quickly than the couple anticipated. They stored all their belongings and told their parents they would arrange for a moving truck once they got to where they were going. Fate took them to Anacortes, WA, sight unseen and that move would become the first of many and a life filled with adventures.

During the eight years of living in Washington State, Sheldon joined Pipefitter’s Local #265 by testing through the four year apprenticeship program. Sheldon worked for several years as a Pipefitter and helped to construct Arco Alaska, Inc.’s modular buildings for the North Slope Kuparuk River construction contract. Completed structures were loaded on industrial barges and towed to Alaska in a yearly sealift. It would be the beginning of Sheldon’s love for industrial construction.

Deb and Sheldon’s only child, Brandon James Alex Bolstad, was born in 1982. He was the absolute joy and blessing of his parent’s existence. Brandon was a daddy’s boy through and through. As a toddler, Brandon was Daddy’s helper in the shop which got him off to an early start in the world of construction. In 1992 the family moved back to Fertile, MN. Sheldon set about remodeling the 1919-built house that would become home base for the next 24 years. Sheldon never feared hard work whether physical or mental. He added a garage, the shop of his dreams, extensive landscaping, and a large flower garden. Countless holidays and special events occurred while residing there. Sheldon loved to take breaks from work and sit at the patio table with a tall lemon iced tea. He enjoyed watching the wildlife in the yard, particularly the bluebirds returning to their house that he had built. When the sun got too warm, he’d move around to the porch swing to peacefully watch the world go by.

Sheldon was very social and loved to visit and be around people. He was a proud member of Masonic Lodge, Free & Accepted Masons #77, and Chapter #59 Royal Arch Masons, of Anacortes, WA, as well as Hesperus Commandery #8 and Council #16 in Bellingham, WA. He was a Union member of Steamfitter’s Local #265, Everett, WA as well as a member of Beltrami United Methodist Church.

Sheldon remained active in the industrial construction industry his entire working career. He worked his way through the ranks and eventually became a Senior Construction Manager with projects in the Petrochemical, Biotech/Pharmaceutical, and Mining Industries in multiple states as well as Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Sweden, and Canada.

Sheldon had numerous hobbies the most notable of which was woodcarving. His creations included birds, figurines, animals and a complete nativity set. He made beautiful stained-glass lampshades as well as windows, angels and kaleidoscopes. Time passed quickly and Sheldon’s proudest moments occurred when Brandon worked onsite with him, earned his BS degree in Construction Management, met and married Laura, and in 2021 became a daddy to Luca Erik Bolstad. Sheldon found untold joy looking at Luca pictures and videos sent daily, and watching every move Luca made on Facetime. He always had at least one book going and couldn’t miss an episode of Battle Bots or Oak Island. In his later years, he assembled countless jigsaw puzzles.

Sheldon was a loving, caring, giving, man who would do anything for anyone. He was smart, determined, stubborn, impatient, and funny. He had a will like no other throughout his life and that strong will would see him through numerous major medical events including the severe brain hemorrhage in 2017 that ended his working career. Despite the damage left by the stroke and multiple health issues, Sheldon rarely complained as he adjusted to a slower pace in life.

He is forever loved and missed by his wife of 48 years, Deb, son; Brandon and daughter-in-law; Laura, grandson; Luca, siblings; brother; Jim Cummings, sisters; Sylvia LaVine, Barb Stundahl, Claudia (David) Crockett, and Julene Bolstad; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Alvin E. and Evelyn M. Bolstad, grandparents; Nillie K (Julia) Bolstad and Olai (Olga) Skiple, sister-in-law; Judith Cummings, Nephew; Nicholas LaVine

A private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

Rudy Giuliani and other Trump allies plead ‘not guilty’ to felony charges in Arizona election interference case

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani speaks to the press after a jury awarded 2 former Atlanta poll workers $148 million for defamation. WASHINGTON^ DC - December 15^ 2023

Former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani was among the 11 allies of former President Trump who pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in Arizona to nine felony charges related to their involvement in a plan to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state. The 11 people arraigned Tuesday were among 18 people charged last month by a state grand jury over the plan. They include Giuliani and so-called “fake electors” who signed documents claiming to be Arizona’s Electoral College electors.

The ten others, who also pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, forgery and fraud charges related to the case, include former Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward and her husband Michael Ward; state legislator Anthony Kern; Robert Montgomery, the former head of the Cochise County GOP; Republican Party activists Samuel Moorhead, Nancy Cottle and Loraine Pellegrino; Greg Safsten, the former Arizona GOP executive director; former Trump attorney Christina Bobb; and Tyler Bowyer, the Republican National Committee’s Arizona committeeman and the chief operating officer of the Trump-aligned Turning Point Action.

Giuliani, Bowyer, Cottle, Montgomery, Pellegrino and Bobb appeared virtually for the arraignment that was held in a Phoenix courtroom. Giuliani and Kelli Ward’s trials are scheduled for Oct. 17, about 3 weeks before the U.S. election. Giuliani said during his remote appearance that he did not have an attorney at this time, but when asked by the court whether he needed counsel appointed for the arraignment, he said: “No, no, I think I am capable of handling it myself.” Arizona authorities had tried unsuccessfully over several weeks to serve Giuliani notice of the indictment against him, but he was finally served as he was walking to a car after his 80th birthday celebration in Palm Beach, Florida last Friday.

Several of those charged in the Arizona case have also been arraigned on similar charges in Georgia, where prosecutors also allege that Trump allies tried to overturn the election there.

Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough files lawsuit to protect Graceland after it is sent to foreclosure

Graceland Mansion^ Elvis Presley lived in this Mansion from 1957 – 1977. MEMPHIS^ TENNESSEE^ USA.

Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, actress Riley Keough, is fighting the court-approved sale of Graceland, the late singer’s compound in Memphis, Tennessee.

Keough, identified in the court filing as Danielle Riley Keough, filed a claim in Tennessee civil court that alleges the creditor behind the foreclosure claim used forged signatures. According to an apparent foreclosure notice, Graceland had been set to be auctioned off at the Shelby County courthouse in Memphis, Tennessee, on Thursday this week, however court documents show that a Memphis judge blocked the sale after Keough sought a temporary restraining order and filed a lawsuit.

The foreclosure allegedly occurred after Elvis’ daughter, the late Lisa Marie Presley, used Graceland as collateral to secure a $3.8 million loan from a company called Naussany Investments and Private Lending in 2018, but she failed to pay it off before she died last year.  Keough was granted virtual control of Graceland Mansion and much of Elvis’ estate after her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, died.  She alleges in the suit that the creditor’s paperwork on a $3.8 million loan to Graceland trustees, with a deed of trust on the compound pledged as collateral, is fraudulent. Keough claims in the lawsuit that Naussany Investments “appears to be a false entity created for the purpose” of defrauding her family. The lawsuit also says Keough’s mother “never borrowed money” from the company, or gave them a deed of trust to Graceland, and further alleges that documents claiming otherwise “are forgeries.” The suit alleges the foreclosure sale would thus be “non-judicial” and based on lien paperwork that violates Tennessee law.

In a statement, Elvis Presley Enterprises, the entity that runs Graceland and the assets of the Elvis Presley Trust, suggested the sale is a scheme: “Elvis Presley Enterprises can confirm that these claims are fraudulent. There is no foreclosure sale. Simply put, the counter lawsuit has been filed is to stop the fraud.”  According to CBS affiliate in Memphis WREG, an attorney for Keough says a temporary restraining order was granted Monday. A judge will consider Keough’s court filing in a hearing on Wednesday.

Built in 1939, Graceland Mansion was purchased by Elvis in 1957, where he lived until his death in 1977.  Five years later it was opened to the public as a music history theme park, where it currently attracts roughly 600,000 visitors a year, according to the venue.  Graceland was named to the American National Register of Historic Places in 1991; it is also the final resting place for Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie.
