THE NORTHWEST MINNESOTA ARTS COUNCIL IS DOING A CALL FOR ART

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council is announcing a Call for Art on “Around the Farm.” Around the Farm will feature Hallock Artist Beau Bakken and is open to entries from our region.

Farming is more than a job or a career. It is fundamental to our community’s way of life, part of our region’s cultural identity and history, and deeply rooted in where and how we live, work, and play. This art exhibit will celebrate farm life and farming and highlight the importance of agriculture in the lives of residents of our northwest Minnesota region through art.

The exhibit will be held in January and February 2025 at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls. Beau Bakken of Hallock will be the featured artist.

The art will revolve around farms, farming machinery, harvest, farmland, agricultural heritage, farm animals, and farm life. It must be original and in any medium, including painting, mixed media, drawing, mosaic, fiber arts, writing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and more.

The submission deadline is December 2, 2024, and is limited to two submissions. Send dimensions, medium, title, sale price, and where you are from, along with a photo of the artwork, to treyeverettcreates@gmail.com. We welcome submissions from our seven-county Minnesota service areas, including Kittson, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau counties. Physical artwork will be dropped off at the gallery in Thief River Falls in mid-December—a date to be determined.

For more information, contact Trey at treyeverettecreates@gmail.com or 218-280-4917. Visit our website at nwartscouncil.org

CROOKSTON LEGION BASEBALL BEATS WIN-E-MAC, GAME 2 CALLED DUE TO WEATHER

The Crookston American Legion Post 20 Baseball team hosted Win-E-Mac in a double-header Friday evening at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.
Crookston won the first game 11-1 in five innings behind a solid pitching performance from Gavyn Hlucny and good hitting up and down the lineup. The second game was called after two innings due to severe weather approaching the Crookston area.

FIRST INNING
Win-E-Mac’s Cameron Bergman started off the game with a single and stole second base. The next batter struck out before Bergman was caught stealing on a perfect throw from Crookston catcher Blake Melsa. The next batter struck out, and the half-inning was over.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two groundouts, and Melsa doubled but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. The teams were scoreless after the first inning.

SECOND INNING
Win-E-Mac’s Bergen Howard tripled with one out and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout, Clay Below walked, and the next batter struck out for the third out of the inning.
The first Crookston batter grounded out before Teagan Lubinski reached on an error. The next two batters struck out.

THIRD INNING
Win-E-Mac was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
Crookston had a threat going with back-to-back one-out walks to Lucas Miller and Matt Contreras. After a pop out, Gavyn Hlucny walked, and Tanner Giese singled to score two runs for a 2-1 lead. Lubinski walked before a pop out, and Crookston led 2-1 after three innings.

FOURTH INNING
The first two Win-E-Mac batters grounded out and popped out. After a Howard single, the next batter struck out as Crookston pitcher Hlucny continued his stellar pitching.
Crookston added to the lead in the bottom of the inning as Nolan Cassavant laced a line drive to right-center field for a double. Carter Fee walked, and Miller grounded out, and two runs scored for a 4-1 lead. Contreras walked, and Melsa singled. Contreras was thrown out trying to score for the second out of the inning. Hlucny and Giese both walked to load the bases, and Lubinski walked to score a run for a 5-1 lead. Isaiah Donarski walked to score another run. Cassavant recorded his second hit of the inning when he had a bloop single to right field to score two runs. Fee walked for the second time in the inning to load the bases before Donarski was hit by a pitch to score another run for a 9-1 lead. The next batter lined out to left field.

FIFTH INNING
Hlucny continued to pitch well with a strikeout of the first batter before hitting a minor speed bump with back-to-back walks before getting a fly out and a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Crookston’s Hlucny picked up the complete game win on the mound while going all five innings, striking out nine. He only allowed one unearned run.

GAME TWO –

FIRST INNING
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion to start the game with two flyouts and a lineout.
Win-E-Mac’s first batters struck out before some control problems popped up. The next three batters walked to load the bases before Howard was hit by a pitch to score a run for a 1-0 lead. Crookston’s Contreras had a visit from assistant coach Alex Longoria. When Longoria came back from the meeting on the mound, he told head coach Rob Silvers with a smile, “I told him to throw strikes.” It worked because Contreras struck out the next batter before getting the third out on a ground out to get out of the inning.

SECOND INNING
Crookston’s Tanner Giese singled to start the inning. After a strikeout, Donarski walked, and the next batter hit into a double play.
The first Win-E-Mac batter struck out before Peter Kolden walked, and Bergman singled. A run scored on a Sander ground out for a 2-0 lead. Hamre reached on an error and stole second base and runners were at second and third. The next batter struck out, and Win-E-Mac led 2-0 after two innings.

THIRD INNING
Crookston’s Cody Demarais started off the inning with a great at bat. He fouled off several pitches, including one foul ball that hit his grandpa’s car. After fouling a few more pitches, he was hit by a pitch. Lucas Miller singled to right field before the next two batters were retired. Hlucny singled to score a run to bring Crookton within a 2-1 deficit. Hlucny was thrown out trying to reach second base, and the inning was over.

A thunderstorm was moving in, and lightning was visible. The umpires and coaches talked and decided to call the game for everyone’s safety. The second game won’t count, as only two innings were played.

Crookston improves to 8-7 on the year and 4-2 in league play and will host Fargo on Monday.

ALTRU HOSPITAL NAMED TO NEWSWEEK’S LIST OF BEST MATERNITY HOSPITALS

Altru is the only hospital in North Dakota to be named to Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2024. The list was announced last month and can be viewed on Newsweek.com.

“At Altru, we continue to make a difference for our mothers and babies,” said Dr. Josh Deere, president of Altru. “For the last three years, we’ve received this recognition due to the high-quality care we provide. Our mothers receive the best care from a team dedicated to going above and beyond during their birth experience.”

High-quality maternity care, provided from pregnancy through birth and postpartum is key to the long-term health of newborns and women who give birth. Given that maternity care is a major component of healthcare, Newsweek and Statista, the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider have partnered for the third time to identify America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in 2024.

The ranking is based on three pillars:
1. Nationwide Online Survey: Healthcare professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about maternity processes e.g., neonatal and perinatal doctors, nurses, and midwives were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the U.S.
2. Patient Experience Survey: Survey of the overall patient experience in the hospital.
3. Hospital Quality Metrics: Indicators relevant to maternity care were considered.

Based on the results of the study, Altru is proud to be recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Maternity Centers 2024

President Biden, former President Donald Trump face off in first 2024 Presidential Debate

Donald Trump vs Joe Biden. The 2024 American presidential election concept^ with Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the background.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump took the stage in the first 2024 presidential debate in Atlanta on Thursday night. The debate lasted 90 minutes, airing live on CNN and streaming on CNN.com. Anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash served as moderators. It was the first time either man had debated since 2020, and they made history by marking the first time a sitting president and a former president have ever debated.

The tension between Trump and Biden throughout the debate began from the start, in which the two men did not begin with a handshake, as most typically do. The candidates immediately began taking questions, which included topics such as the state of the economy, abortion and the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the Israel-Hamas/Russia-Ukraine wars.

Both of the candidates’ performances faced criticism; with Trump rattling off false and unsubstantiated statements various topics throughout the evening, and Biden sounding hoarse and appearing to lose his train of thought on several occasions. Echoing what most major networks reported after the debate, the headline on the homepage of CNN read: ‘Biden disappoints; Trump lies and deflects’.  The news outlet went on to say that “Biden, hoarse and displaying little vocal range, was often unable to express his differences with Trump with clarity. At one point, after Biden had trailed off as he defended his record on border security, Trump said: “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said, either.” Trump, meanwhile, at times repeated his frequent election denialism. He said he’d accept the results of the 2024 election if it’s “fair and legal,” but then repeated his lies about fraud in the 2020 election.”

Supreme Court allows Idaho to temporarily offer emergency medical abortions

US Supreme court building on the capitol hill in Washington DC^ United States of America

On Thursday, the Supreme Court officially dismissed an appeal connected to Idaho’s abortion ban, preventing it from being enforced until it the case is heard in the lower courts. The decision was briefly posted on the Supreme Court’s website before it was removed on Wednesday, with a spokesperson confirming it was “inadvertently” released.

The 5-4 decision reinstates a lower court ruling that temporarily allowed hospitals in the state to perform emergency abortions to protect the life of the mother, and the health of the mother. Per NPR, three of the court’s conservatives — Chief Justice John Roberts, and Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett — sided with the three liberals — Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson — in dismissing the appeal from Idaho without considering the core issues in the case. Dissenting were Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas.

President Joe Biden praised the dismissal, saying in a White House statement: “Today’s Supreme Court order ensures that women in Idaho can access the emergency medical care they need while the case returns to the lower courts. No woman should be denied care, made to wait until she’s near death, or forced to flee her home state just to receive the healthcare she needs.”

The opinion did not permanently resolve whether Idaho acted within its rights, or whether the state law is pre-empted by EMTALA. Rather, by a 6-3 vote, the court retreated from a previous ruling that had temporarily allowed Idaho’s law to take effect, meaning that emergency abortions were illegal in the state if they were to save a mother’s health, but not her life. Idaho’s Attorney General Raul Labrador said in a statement that the court did allow most of the law to take effect and that he believes once heard, the full law will be implemented: “after listening to the [Justice Department’s] best argument to defend the Biden administration’s legally untenable position, that Idaho’s Defense of Life Act is not preempted by [federal law] and will be vindicated in full.”
