FISHER’S LANDING DAY WILL BE SATURDAY, JUNE 29

Fisher’s Landing Days is this weekend, Saturday, June 29. Events will take place throughout the day. 38 sponsors helped put on the event, which is free to the public, with a few exceptions.

Fisher’s Landing Day has some history over the years. “Fisher’s Landing Day used to be Sugar Beet Day back in the day. That was previously back in the 80’s, a long time ago. They went on hiatus for a while, and then it transformed into what is called Fisher Landing Day,” said Fisher’s Landing Day board member Mike Theis. “That event probably went on for eight-plus years until Covid came along and shut everything down. Now, we are restarting it again, hopefully as big as before. It used to be a fairly large event, and we are hoping to get that running again, celebrate the community, and have fun as a community. It’s not just the Fisher community, it’s everybody. We want everybody in Crookston to come on over, partake, and have fun.”

Once again, Fisher’s Landing Day will be on Saturday, June 29, with many festivities running throughout the day as you can see by the schedule below.
– 9:00 a.m., there will be a Kiddy Run.
– 9:30 a.m., there will be a 5k Run ($25 entry fee).
– 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., there will be a Pancake Breakfast.
– 10:30 a.m., the Medallion Hunt will begin. Hints will be posted throughout the day.

MINNESOTA HOUSING WAS IMPERSONATED IN A FACEBOOK SCAM

This week, Minnesota Housing was impersonated in a Facebook scam about open waitlists for people seeking housing or Section 8/Housing Choice Vouchers. The fraudulent Facebook page has been taken down.

The perpetrators of the scam, posing as the state agency Minnesota Housing on Facebook, used alternate identities, including “Minnesota Housing Authority” and “Minnesota Housing Development Authority,” to lure people to apply for nonexistent housing units and vouchers online or in person.

Unsuspecting people who followed the links were asked for personally identifiable information that, if provided, put them at risk for identity theft. The scammers directed other people to Minnesota Housing’s St. Paul office to apply for the vouchers and housing, only to be told the information they obtained is a scam.

“This scam targets some of the most vulnerable populations in our state, which is unacceptable,” Minnesota Housing Deputy Commissioner Rachel Robinson says. “It exploits the urgency tied to housing. We know Minnesotans struggle to secure safe and stable housing around the state. At Minnesota Housing, we do our best to prevent and address these scams.”

Minnesota Housing does not manage housing waitlists and does not issue housing vouchers. According to the Metropolitan Council’s Housing and Redevelopment Authority (Metro HRA), one waiting list is open in Dakota County, and another is scheduled for Bloomington on July 15. Waiting list opening information can be found at HousingLink – Twin Cities Housing Authority Waiting List Openings.

People with questions about federal rental assistance are encouraged to contact their local Public Housing Agency. Minnesota Housing provides other ways to find housing help on its website.

Similar disinformation campaigns have targeted housing agencies, authorities, and organizations in multiple states in recent weeks. In each case, Facebook/Meta eventually took down the reported pages. All fraudulent information was removed from Facebook. The agency has alerted its partners and filed reports with local, state, and federal authorities.

Supreme Court rejects challenge to Biden admin contacts with social media companies

United States Supreme Court Building in a cloudy spring day

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a First Amendment challenge from a group of social media users and two states  to the Biden administration’s communication with social media companies in an effort to remove misinformation on the platforms about COVID-19 and the 2020 election.

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling issued Wednesday, said the individual and state plaintiffs in the case did not have standing to seek a preliminary injunction against federal executive-branch officials and agencies over their official communications with social-media companies about the spread of misinformation online. The court determined that the users and the states, Louisiana and Missouri, did not have the legal right to seek an injunction against the Biden administration over its contacts with the platforms. The users had argued that their speech was unconstitutionally stifled when their social media posts were removed or suppressed after prodding by administration officials.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote in the opinion for the majority: “The plaintiffs fail, by and large, to link their past social-media restrictions and the defendants’ communications with the platforms .. The plaintiffs, without any concrete link between their injuries and the defendants’ conduct, ask us to conduct a review of the yearslong communications between dozens of federal officials, across different agencies, with different social-media platforms, about different topics. This court’s standing doctrine prevents us from exercising such general legal oversight of the other branches of government.”

Per ABC News, the ruling means executive branch agencies involved in the case — the White House, Surgeon General, CDC, FBI and CISA, among others — can continue to interact with social media companies over moderation of content on their platforms.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement: “The Supreme Court’s decision is the right one, and it helps ensure the Biden Administration can continue our important work with technology companies to protect the safety and security of the American people, after years of extreme and unfounded Republican attacks on public officials who engaged in critical work to keep Americans safe.”
