TAKE A KID FISHING WEEKEND IS JUNE 7-9 IN MINNESOTA

During Take a Kid Fishing Weekend from Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9, Minnesota residents can fish without licenses if they take children 15 or younger fishing — and fishing is one way among many to enjoy Great Outdoors Month (June).

“Fishing is fun, and it’s a great way to spend time outdoors together with kids,” said Benji Kohn, volunteer mentor program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “Going fishing can be as simple as finding some rods and reels, finding or buying worms for bait, and heading to a nearby lake to give fishing a try.”

Youth 15 and younger do not require fishing licenses at any time of the year, though they must observe all fishing seasons and other regulations. Take a Kid Fishing Weekend allows adult Minnesotans to fish without a license as long as they take a child fishing with them. Minnesota residents also may generally fish in state parks without a fishing license if the body of water does not require a trout stamp.

Take a Kid Fishing Weekend is one among many other outdoor opportunities available to Minnesotans during Great Outdoors Month. During the month, Gov. Tim Walz and the Minnesota DNR are encouraging Minnesotans to get out in nature and enjoy the state’s outstanding outdoor opportunities, including fishing, riding all-terrain vehicles on state ATV trails, and visiting state parks and recreation areas to hike, bike, camp, swim, paddle or go birding. The proclamation of Great Outdoors Month cites the health and wellness benefits of spending time outdoors as one of the many reasons to encourage Minnesotans to get outdoors.

The Minnesota DNR’s take a kid fishing webpage (mndnr.gov/takeakidfishing) has a variety of online resources available for anyone interested in taking a kid fishing, including information and recorded webinars on how to fish, accessible piers and shore fishing locations, buying a fishing license, and what to do with live bait when done fishing.

James “Jim” Steven Bak – OBIT

James “Jim” Steven Bak, age 74, of Fertile, Minnesota, died Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Essentia Hospital, Fargo, ND.

James S. Bak was born on August 9, 1949, the son of Joseph and Joyce (Lene) Bak in Crookston, Minnesota. He was raised on the family farm in Bear Park Township. As a young man, Jim worked on the family farm and did custom baling with his dad. He also worked at the Rindal Creamery. After graduation, Jim began hauling gravel for Donnie Bakken. Jim was united in marriage on June 14, 1975, to Julie Ann Erickson. Soon after, they bought a farmstead not far from his family home and raised dairy cows. After selling his herd, he purchased a septic tank truck and spent many years cleaning tanks. He also did seasonal farm work throughout the years, still hauling beets last fall. He loved farm work.

Jim enjoyed snowmobiling and motorcycling in his younger years and getting together with his friends in the sandhills. He had a passion for tractors and could fix just about anything. He loved a good project and spent many hours in his shop. In his later years he bought a golf cart and put many miles on cruising with their dog Roxy and the grandkids looking for wildlife and visiting the neighbors. Jim especially enjoyed his grandkids and sharing his knowledge of mechanics and love of nature. You never had to wonder what Jim was thinking, he valued honesty and hard work. He was always willing to help, even if there were a few grumbles along the way. Jim will truly be missed by those who loved him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Julie Bak; daughters, Jeanice (Steve) Soli and Jessica (Brian) Bak, all of Fertile, MN; seven grandchildren, Chris (Jordyn) Moser, Shawn Moser, Jayden (James) Horton, Damon Horton, Jax Horgeshimer, Jase Horgeshimer and Willa Horgeshimer; brother, Joel Bak, Warroad, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jerry and John.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Erikson-Vik-Ganje Funeral Home, Fertile, MN, with visitation one hour before the memorial service at the funeral home. No need to wear dress clothes, Jim would think that was foolish.

THE CITY OF CROOKSTON RELEASES ITS FIRST NEWSLETTER

The City of Crookston released its first-ever newsletter earlier this week. This first edition will be for the Summer of 2024. The city has also announced that it will have a follow-up newsletter for the Fall of 2024 in August.

The City of Crookston’s Marketing/Event Coordinator, Keenan Devier, created the new newsletter with assistance from department heads at City Hall. Devier describes the newsletter’s purpose, “When I first started in my position a couple of months ago, I learned from other Marketing Coordinators from other cities, particularly in Minnesota, that a newsletter, generally speaking, is one of the number one ways that their residents find out new information about what is going on within the city so that was one of the key priorities when I started at my position.”

The newsletter provides an in-depth look at voting information for the upcoming local elections. It details polling times, locations, and other helpful information regarding this year’s voting. Devier mentions, “One of the main things we wanted to touch on was some of the things coming up later in the year.” He continues, “So with it being an election year, we wanted to have a central location for people to find out information about their elections for the upcoming year.”

Other things included in the Summer 2024 Newsletter directory are things such as

  • Elected Officials
  • Public Works
  • Polk County Public Health
  • Crookston Events

Devier also notes, “I fully acknowledge that with this being the first edition of the newsletter that there is going to be potentially things that were missed whether its different community members that should have had representation or maybe some events I might have missed coming up here but this is going to be a quarterly newsletter so the next edition of this is going to be our fall newsletter that will probably be rolling out in mid-August and just know that this is going to continue to improve as we continue to publish.
