ALL-INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND COMING TO HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THIS FALL

Kayse Thompson looks forward to watching her daughter Elliot, 3, play on the future Highland Elementary School Inclusive Playground in Crookston.
Elliot is a wheelchair user and crawler.
“Most of the playgrounds in Crookston, especially those with wood chips and tall steps, can be difficult for her to play in,” Thompson shared. “She will be at Highland in two years, and the new playground will be instrumental in her ability to play and socialize with her peers. It will also be nice for us to have a playground in Crookston that she can enjoy as she gets older.”
Currently, the nearest inclusive playgrounds are in the Fargo/Moorhead areas.

All are Welcome
“So All Can Play” is the theme of the inclusive playground project. Highland Principal Chris Trostad says construction on the 6,114 square foot playground is scheduled to begin in October.
An inclusive playground is an open, safe space carefully designed to promote play among individuals of differing abilities, ages, and communities. It gives people with and without disability the same platform to play while breaking down barriers, both physically and socially. Children, adults, and families are encouraged to experience the benefits of playing together.
The inclusive design features not only create more play opportunities for all children, but also allow parents, guardians, and caregivers that use mobility equipment better accessibility to interact and play with their children throughout the playground.
The following are just a few of the features of the inclusive playground designed for Highland
  • Rubberized footing, allowing wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers better access and improving fall height safety
  • Wheelchair-accessible ramps throughout the play structure
  • Stainless steel slides to avoid interference with cochlear implant function
  • Deep seated swings and seesaw to support individuals with balance difficulties
  • Widened ramps to better assist children and ensure their safety during play
  • Musical equipment to promote creative play
  • Multiple activity panels to promote sensory integration and play
  • Structures and spaces that promote balance, coordination, and social skills as well as cognitive and emotional development on all levels
The Importance of Play
The project aims to create opportunity and equality through one of the most important means of development, play!
“An inclusive playground will have so many positive benefits for young children and families in our community,” said Gina Gunderson, Early Childhood coordinator at Crookston Public Schools. “It equips all children with the ability to play together and independently while developing both physically and socially.
“Active play is critical for healthy development and wellbeing of children and I am so excited our district and community is investing in our children. Our community is filled with many wonderful playgrounds for families to gather and children to be active and this will be an exciting addition.”
High Need
Nearly one-third of students within the Crookston School District receive individualized education programming. Crookston special education professionals have recognized students at different developmental levels who require modifications to the typical school environment, including the playground, to succeed.
The following school officials, pediatric specialists, and community members are on the Highland Inclusive Playground Committee driving the project
  • Chris Trostad, principal, Highland Elementary School
  • Randal Bergquist, superintendent, Crookston Public Schools
  • Caitlyn Michno, director of Rehab Services, RiverView Health
  • Gina Gunderson, coordinator, Crookston Early Childhood
  • Gary Stegman, retired art teacher, Crookston High School
  • Courtney Olson, Highland parent, marketing specialist, University of North Dakota
  • Tina Mason, Crookston Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
  • Lorri Capistran, Crookston PTO
  • Maddie Engelstad, pediatric occupational therapist, RiverView Health
  • Chris Fee, president/general manager, KROX Radio
Fundraising for the project will begin soon through the Northwest Minnesota Foundation (NMF), with a goal of $400,000. The Highland Inclusive Playground is a fund within the NMF’s family of funds. NMF is a public, charitable foundation serving two tribal nations and 12 counties in Northwest Minnesota. Sponsorship levels and opportunities to purchase specific playground items will be available.
For more information on the project, contact Trostad at 281.5600, visit the Highland Inclusive Playground Facebook page at www.facebook.com/highlandinclusiveplayground, or the Northwest Minnesota Foundation at https://secure.qgiv.com/for/heip-c.

WEDNESDAY ON THE WATER EVENT WILL BE AUGUST 7

The University of Minnesota Extension Regional Sustainable Development Partnership, the City of Crookston, Crookston Community Development and Housing, and Crookston Park and Rec have teamed up to offer the Wednesday on the Water event on Wednesday, August 7.

The free event will allow people to canoe or kayak the Red Lake River in Crookston. “It should be a lot of fun getting folks out on the water, whether they are experienced or haven’t done it before. We will have folks who can help them get in,” said Shannon Stassen, one of the event organizers. “The bonus about here in Crookston paddling is that if you are a beginner, it’s a safe and easy paddle. We are encouraging folks, especially those who haven’t done it, to check things out. We will help you get in the water and have people paddling beside you. It is a short trip, about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.”

Equipment (Canoes/Kayaks) are made available by the University of Minnesota Crookston and Oliver’s Canoe Outfitters. “Travis Oliver has some canoes and kayaks available and Michelle Christopherson is working with UMC to get all of their boats as well,” said Stassen. “We are asking folks that are avid canoers to join us, but if you’re willing to help somebody else, use your watercraft, and get out there, that’s great too. We will have folks to help you get in.” Stassen added you should expect to get your feet wet.

All participants are asked to be ready in Central Park at 5:45 p.m. There will be a carpool to the starting location at the Highway 2/Highway 9 launch, which will end in Central Park. “We will get everybody in the water about 6:00 p.m.,” said Stassen. “Depending on the speed of the water, it’s a little over an hour, so we will be off the water well before dark. There will be mosquitos, so be ready for that. It is just beautiful on the water. We are fortunate to have this river and everything you will see out there.”

The route will follow the current, but it will still take some paddling and some physical activity to get to Central Park. “You’re going with the current into Central Park, so that is a great thing. You can paddle pretty lightly, and you’ll get there,” said Stassen. If you really want to get a workout, you can probably do it in 50 minutes. It’s a fairly light workout, almost all upper body with a fair amount of exercise involved, but the current will help you out.”

There are a limited number of watercraft available, so anybody interested in participating in the Wednesday on the Water event should call or text Stassen at 218-280-1347 to reserve a canoe or kayak. “Reach out early,” said Stassen. “We didn’t say we are shutting down registration, but there is a point where we are going to be full, and if you reach out Tuesday and say I want to get in, we will do our best, but we might have everything booked up by then. The sooner, the better.”

Senate passes major child online safety bill

Kid who plays games on the internet at night. Portrait of a teenager boy using mobile phone on dark room

The Senate overwhelmingly passed a pair of children’s online safety bills on Tuesday, designed to protect children from dangerous online content and hold tech companies more accountable for the harm that they cause.

The two bills in the package, which passed 91-3, are known as the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), and the Children’s and Teens Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0).  They represent the most significant congressional action in decades to regulate social media’s impact on children and teens.

The bill package had been pushed by parents of children who died by suicide after online bullying or have otherwise been harmed by online content. If passed by the House, the bills will force companies to take reasonable steps to prevent harm on online platforms frequently used by minors, requiring them to exercise “duty of care” and ensure that they generally default to the safest settings possible.

The bill would be the first major tech regulation package to move in a decade, and it could potentially pave the way for other bills that would strengthen online privacy laws or set parameters for the growing use of artificial intelligence. If the child safety bill becomes law, companies would be required to mitigate harm to children, including bullying and violence, the promotion of suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse, sexual exploitation and advertisements for illegal products such as narcotics, tobacco or alcohol.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has said he is “committed to working to find consensus,” while Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who wrote the bill with Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, said that the legislation is about allowing children, teens and parents “to take back control of their lives online,” adding that the message to big tech companies is that “we no longer trust you to make decisions for us.”

Several tech companies, including Microsoft, X and Snap, have supported the legislation. But NetChoice, a a tech industry group that represents X and Snap, along with Google, TikTok and Meta Platforms, called it unconstitutional.  A Meta spokesperson shared in a statement: “We support the development of age-appropriate standards for teens online, and appreciate KOSA’s attempt to create a consistent set of rules for the industry to follow. However, we think there’s a better way to help parents oversee their teens’ online experiences: federal legislation should require app stores to get parents’ approval whenever their teens under 16 download apps.”

Blumenthal and Blackburn have said they worked to find a balance between forcing companies to become more responsible for what children see online while also ensuring that Congress does not go too far in regulating what individuals post, due to First Amendment concerns. The bill also includes an update to child privacy laws that prohibit online companies from collecting personal information from users under 13, raising that age to 17.

Taylor Swift ‘in shock’ after third girl dies from stabbing at Swift-themed event in the U.K.

Police in the United Kingdom confirmed that a third young girl has died after a 17-year-old male went on a brutal stabbing spree at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the U.K.

Officers responded just before noon on Monday to reports of a stabbing at the Hart Space in Southport, a seaside town about 20 miles north of Liverpool. The local community center was holding a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance workshop for children ages 6-11 when the incident occurred, according to Merseyside police. Two girls, 6-year-old Bebe King and 7-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, were killed, and nine other children were injured, police said. The Merseyside Police confirmed Tuesday that a third girl, 9-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar, died on Tuesday morning in the hospital.  Five other children and two adults remain in critical condition at local hospitals.

The 17-year-old male suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and murder, and a knife was seized after the attack, with BBC News reporting that the suspect was born in Cardiff, Wales and moved to the Southport area in 2013.  Authorities are working to determine a motive in the rampage in Southport in northwest England.

In a message posted on social media Tuesday, Swift said she was “completely in shock” and still processing “the horror” of the attack, while expressing her sympathy at the loss of life: “The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I’m just completely in shock. The loss of life and the innocence, and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families, and first responders. These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

As of Tuesday morning, a group of Taylor Swift fans had raised the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars to support the victims of the attack and their families. The fundraising page says the group is working with the regional Alder Hey Children’s Charity, “and raising funeral funds for the two young Swifties who have tragically passed.”

Police said the attack is not being treated as terror-related, and they are not looking for any other suspects. Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said (per the Associated Press):  “We believe the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked,”

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the stabbing spree “horrendous and deeply shocking..my thoughts are with all those affected. I would like to thank the police and emergency services for their swift response. I am being kept updated as the situation develops.”

Prince William and his wife Catherine said that “as parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through.”
