2 dead, 4 injured after man drives his car through restaurant patio in Minnesota

Minneapolis Police car in downtown Minneapolis^ Minnesota^ MN USA^ May 5^ 2023.

Two people were killed and four others injured after a man drove his car through a restaurant patio in a Minneapolis suburb over the weekend (per The Associated Press.)

The man drove his car through a restaurant patio where a group of medical workers were celebrating in a Minneapolis suburb on Sunday, with surveillance footage captured the unidenfitied man driving into the outdoor patio of the Park Tavern in St. Louis Park, located west of Minneapolis. The footage shows the man entering the restaurant parking lot on Sunday evening but not going inside. He attempted to park, then drove into the outdoor patio.

The driver was arrested for criminal vehicular homicide. Police did not offer additional details on a potential motive, nor did they identify the victims. In a written statement on Monday, Annelise Heitkamp, a spokesperson for Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, said one of the people who died and the four who were injured worked at the facility. Said Heitkamp: “Following the tragic incident at Park Tavern, we’re grieving the loss of a loved and respected colleague and friend to many here at Methodist Hospital and HealthPartners. Our thoughts are with our colleague’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

A spokesperson for HealthPartners, a healthcare nonprofit that operates Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, told KARE-TV that nurses and staffers from the facility were among the victims.  Dr. Thomas Stark from Methodist Hospital told KSTP-TV that the group of colleagues went to Park Tavern on Sunday night to celebrate with one of the nurses, who was leaving her role for a new position. Park Tavern owner Phil Weber also told the news station that the second person who died is Kristina Folkerts, 30, a server at the restaurant.

The Minnesota State Patrol said that a law enforcement investigation into the episode is ongoing.

4 killed in shooting at Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line train station

CTA Chicago Transit Authority elevated train tracks with green line train going through the tunnel above the Illinois Institute of Technology McCormick Tribune Campus Cente. Chicago^ IL April 20^ 2020

Officials confirmed that four people were killed in a shooting early Monday on a Chicago Transit Authority train in Forest Park, Illinois.

The Forest Park Police Department said in a Facebook post that they received a 911 call around 5:27 a.m. about three people shot on a westbound train at the CTA Blue Line station at 711 Desplaines Avenue, Forest Park, just west of Chicago, around 5:30 a.m. local time. Authorities cleared the station, finding four victims — three were pronounced dead on scene, and the fourth was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where they died.

Forest Park police, along with CTA security, used video surveillance to help identify the offender; with Chicago Police later locating the suspect who matched the description on a CTA Pink Line train. The subject was taken into custody and a firearm was found. According to Forest Park officials, only one suspect is believed to have been involved in the shooting, which was targeted.

The CTA said in a Monday afternoon news briefing that the incident was a “heinous and egregious act of violence” that “should never have occurred, none the less on a public transit train. As soon as it was reported, CTA immediately deployed resources to assist the Forest Park Police in their investigation into the matter, including review of all possible security camera footage, which proved to be vital in aiding local enforcement.”

The CTA said it will continue to work with local law enforcement regarding the ongoing investigation.

Travis Ross wins the Ernotte Hiller Labor Day Golf Tournament

travis-ross7663

Travis Ross won the 2024 Ernotte Hiller Memorial Labor Day Golf tournament at Minakwa Golf Course on Monday.

Ross shot a 67 in the qualifying round for the second-best qualifying score, two strokes behind Andrew Wilhelm (a University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Men’s Golfer).

In the first round, Ross beat Brady Heppner 2-up. In the second round, Ross beat Isaac Westlake (a former Pirate and Winona State golfer) 4 and 3. In the semi-finals, Ross beat Andrew Wilhelm 2-up to advance to a championship. “The Wilhelm match would be tough to duplicate as I got a couple of breaks down the stretch,” said Ross.  On the other side of the bracket, Carson Shultis (a UMC Golfer) beat Scott Lindgren in one extra hole. In the next round, Shultis beat defending champ Jack Lindgren 4 and 2. In the semi-finals, Shultis beat multi-time champion Mark Lyczewski 6 and 5 to advance to the championship.

In the championship, Ross beat Shultis 3 and 2 to win the championship for the first time. “I feel very fortunate to pull it off this weekend, and it has been a goal to get up on the champions board,” said Ross. “I got off to a slow start in the morning, and both of the matches (against Heppner and Wilhelm) came down to the wire. Overall, I played pretty well and had enough shots go my way to edge it out. It was fun playing in these tight matches and competing with UMC players (Wilhelm and Shultis). Brad Heppner has been building a great program with some very good players.”Ross is no stranger to success on the golf course, as he golfed at St. Cloud State University, where he won the NCC Individual championship in 2007, before transferring to D-1 New Mexico, where he made the Mountain West All-Conference in 2011.
After college, Travis played pro and retired 10 years ago. Ross last played in the Hiller tournament in 2005 as a senior in high school.

POLK COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY SCRUFFY TAILS SEEKS DONATIONS TO KEEP DOORS OPEN

dsc_0095-2-200x300989597-1

At the most recent City Council meeting, Scruffy Tails Board Member Val Tuseth spoke to the Council about the financial issues they are facing at the facility. Sadly, some of the first sentences that were spoken were about how close the Humane Society is to having to close its doors, largely due to the lack of donations that they usually receive throughout the year. In visiting with Erin Wilson, the Manager of Scruffy Tails, on Friday, we learned more about why speaking with the City was so important. “So, right now we are at a very minimal amount of funds, at the point of the meeting we had maybe $7,000 in our bank account, we have gotten donations which is great, since that meeting, so we are able to last like a month,” says Wilson.

Wilson explained that the Humane Society’s donations go towards vet expenses, utilities, and staff wages. As a nonprofit business, it relies heavily on donations and grants to cover its operating costs. When asked if there are ways of saving money or cutting costs, Wilson said the staff hours are cut back so the organization can stay in operation.

Not only does Scruffy Tails usually take in surrenders, which they have had to stop at this time due to lack of funds, but they also house the City of Crookston Police Animal Impound.  “Right now, the City Impound is five kennels they get, they get a straight fee, kind of like rent, and then if an animal comes in, they will pay an additional $18 a day,” said Wilson.

In the past fundraisers have been huge sources of funds to keep the facility open.  When asked about upcoming fundraisers, Wilson mentioned a couple.”We are working on doing a Halloween thing, and then we are working on Purse BINGO, so we’re going to go around soon and ask for donations of purses and door prizes and stuff like that, which I’m kind of excited about because the last Purse BINGO we had in town really hit it off, so that was awesome,” said Wilson.

When asked about the bottom line and what was needed for Scruffy Tails to remain open, Wilson said, “Our monthly expenses without unforeseen vet costs are about $15,000. Our biggest thing is vets.”

Our interview today had the beautiful background noise of kittens asking for attention and playing in their enclosures.  Right now Scruffy Tails has somewhere upwards of 25 felines for adoption and two canines.  The dogs, Walter and Bear, are Blue Healer Mix siblings that came into Scruffy Tails together and are awaiting their forever home.  Unfortunately Scruffy Tails is not able to take in any surrender animals as they just cannot cover the cost.

What happens to the animals at Scruffy Tails if they have to close? Wilson explains. “They will go to other shelters, obviously take care of them until we can find them other places, but that is something we are working on right now, too.”

Wilson really wanted people to know also that they have haulted all renovations.  No work is being done at this time.  Walking through, though, we saw the improvements that were being made for the well-being of the animals.  They have a new space that still needs finishing for the Police Impound, which is bright and safe as opposed to the dark, small room they have now.  Everything they have been doing to improve the facility is for the animals, says Wilson. “The whole point of the renovations was to make the lives of the animals better.”

What are the costs associated with caring for an animal, you might wonder?  Wilson breaks that down for us. “Our animals are in our care on average, 40 days, and it costs us about $1,000 to do their care, their shots, vet costs, and all of that,” says Wilson. The cost of adopting one of the animals is far less. Right now, the cost for cat adoption is between $100-150, and for Dogs, between $200-250.  Those adopted pets have had their initial care done, shots given, and spayed or neutered.

The staff at Scruffy Tails are always looking for volunteers to help care for and walk the animals.  They would also be happy to show people around.  Just visit and see what it’s all about.  It is a beautiful facility, and it’s clear that the staff enjoy their jobs and have found purpose in caring for the animals and finding them homes. If you wish to make a donation, donations can be made in several ways, and that information can be found at www.ScruffyTails.org. Wilson wanted people to know that right now, Greater Goods Charities is matching donations up to $10,000, so now is really a great time to donate.
