Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true. I am so proud of my little plum, my little dragon for making the journey to be with us. Celebrate the Young Child event attended by many

unnamed-2-1-225x300818298-1

The first “Celebrate the Young Child” Event of the year was held on Tuesday, September 17th at  Castle Park.  The theme for the event was Forest Animals and there were many activities provided to engage young children and their families in our nature based play space in Crookston. Research shows that connecting children to nature during the early years has long-term benefits.  There were over 100 people attending and at least a million uninvited mosquitoes!  The hot, humid weather and mosquitoes didn’t keep children and families from having a great time playing in the sand, making binoculars, hiking in the woods, doing woodland yoga, going through the story walk, looking at animal pelts with UMC students and enjoying a picnic supper and trail mix.  We also had entertainer Misti Koop on stage singing, dancing, and engaging children with puppets and fun props!
The event sponsors that made the event possible were: Thrivent Financial, RiverView Health, Crookston Public Library, UMC, Crookston Early Child Summit, Crookston Early Childhood Initiative, Polk County Public Health, Tri Valley Head Start, Crookston Public Schools and the Celebrate the Young Child Collaborative.

UMC SOCCER FALLS IN TIGHTLY CONTESTED MATCH AGAINST MINNESOTA-DULUTH

jordan-metz-1361317

The UMC Women’s Soccer team played their most aggressive match offensively this year but just could not find the back of the net as the Golden Eagles fall to the Bulldogs of MInnesota-Duluth by a score of 1-0 at the University of Minnesota-Crookston Campus.

FIRST HALF
The Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth got off to an aggressive start, as Kaylie Tomzak sent the ball twice towards Jordan Metz in net, but the freshman made sure nothing got by her. In the 8th minute, Morgan Eckerle for the Bulldogs shot one off the crossbar, then followed up with a header, but an unbelievable save by Metz kept it scoreless. In the 16th minute, the Golden Eagles had a breakaway but the shot missed the right post by a few inches. The Bulldogs then upped the ante, forcing Metz to make multiple saves. The Bulldogs finally broke through, scoring in the 21st minute on a goal by Jessica Eischens. The Bulldogs then had another shot hit the post, and the action slowed down for the rest of the first half, with each team getting a corner kick in the final few minutes of the half.

SECOND HALF
UMC came out of the halftime break hoping to be the aggressive team, and got a breakaway attempt in the 51st minute by Callie Holthaus, but it was saved by Chavez. Chavez then made another great save two minutes later, followed by yet another stop on a breakaway, this time by Tyler Chernecki. The Golden Eagles continued to put more pressure on Chavez, but she stepped up to the task each time, recording 4 saves in the first 15 minutes of the half, after 1 in the entire first half. The Golden Eagles had another great look in the 69th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar. Then, UMC had a corner kick in the 74th minute, but the shot was just wide to the left. The Bulldogs attempted to respond with a breakaway by Eckerle, but her shot sailed too high. After a failed ensuing corner, the action stayed in the offensive zone for the Bulldogs until the end of the game, as their stifling defense successfully blanked the Golden Eagles, earning their first win of the season.

UMC after this match has a record of 0-4-1, while the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth get their first win, at 1-4-0.

Carol Violette – OBIT

carol-violette-obit-photo-765x1024709543-1

Carol Violette, 69, of Red Lake Falls, MN, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at Hillcrest Senior Living in Red Lake Falls, MN.

Service of the Word will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN, with Father Bob Schreiner officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

Carol Violette was born on December 3, 1954, in Red Lake Falls, MN, to Frederick and Harriet (Schmidt) Violette. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic grade school through 8th grade and graduated from Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls in 1972.

Carol moved to Duluth, MN, in 1975, where she resided for 34 years. While in Duluth, Carol worked in the food and beverage industry at St. Mary’s Clinic, Duluth Airport, and several other restaurants.

In 2008, Carol moved back to Red Lake Falls to care for her parents. While living there, she worked for 10 years at Seven Clans Casino in Thief River Falls, retiring in 2019.

Carol and her long-time partner Tom loved spending time at Tom’s family cabin. While some preferred kayaking and sailboats, Carol loved her little paddleboat. She would paddle it to an island by herself or with Tom, spending the day hunting for agates, swimming, campfires, and midnight paddleboat rides.

She and Tom shared three adopted cats who were the light of their lives: Pooder, Queenie, and Baby. She loved her family and friends unconditionally. She enjoyed game shows, puzzles, and crosswords and loved taking care of her little house and yard. Carol loved the ocean snorkeling and the outdoors.

She wanted to create a memory for children, so she used Halloween as a theme. It brought her joy to see and invite children through her tiny home for treats. When they are older, they might remember “that little” Halloween house.

This past year and a half, Carol enjoyed volunteering at the Hillcrest community where her father Fred resides. She enjoyed helping with bingo, supplying lots of the bingo prizes, and visiting with the residents and her dad prior to her residency there.

Carol is survived by her father, Frederick Violette; brothers, Wayne (Judy), Dale (Lana), Mark (Lisa), and Jim (Julie) Violette, all of Red Lake Falls; sister, Sally (Neal) Kapp of California; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

Carol is preceded in death by her mother, Harriet Violette; brother, Kevin; long-time partner, Tom; maternal and paternal grandparents; and her three cats.

Condolences may be sent at johnsonfuneralservice.com
