Pirate Girl’s Soccer Draws With Pelican Rapids on Senior Night

crookston-vs-pelican-rapids364757

It was a defensive struggle at KROX Radio Stadium Thursday evening as the Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team and Pelican Rapids ended their game with a scoreless tie.

FIRST HALF
Crookston got started early, taking a possession into their offensive third just twenty seconds into the game. They would remain on offense for the majority of the half. Crookston was able to test Vikings goalkeeper Ashley Zavala early and often, firing off nine shots. Pirates head coach Sarah Reese says quality passing resulted in the shot attempts from Crookston. “I think technically, we played a really good game. We passed well and saw the open shots,” she said. Zavala responded well, however, as nothing made it her. Crookston’s best chances to score in the first half came from the corner kicks. Of the five attempts, there were two good shot chances for the Pirates. One of them was missed wide right off the hip of Brooklyn Waldal. Another saw Maddie Harbott get tangled up with the keeper in front of the net, but Zavala made a heads-up save before Harbott could take a shot. “We noticed (Zavala) was going down early, and we weren’t taking advantage by stepping to the side for the open net,” said Reese, “We were urgently trying the shot, and despite the quantity, we did not have the quality of shots.” Pelican Rapids was able to generate some offense in the middle of the half, but shot one out of bounds and the other into the gloves of Crookston goalkeeper Naomi Johnson.

SECOND HALF –
The Pirates wanted to continue pressuring the Viking defense to start the second half, but it was the Viking offense that started to come to life instead. The Pirate defense stayed aggressive though, interrupting many Pelican Rapids passing lanes and allowing Johnson to see minimal shots. Most of the Viking shots came from the corners, with Johnson having to do very little to make saves. Johnson was tested late in the half on a breakaway from Sadie Funk, but made a great save in front of the net. Crookston’s offense showed some fight as well, as they created shots late in the game as well. Anna Heldstab was unable to connect on a long shot late and Zavala made a close save on another Pirate attempt through a crowd of defenders. The pressure and drama for both sides ramped up in the final five minutes of play, as penalties added up for both sides. The Vikings had two free kicks within striking distance, but the Pirate defense held strong on both occasions. “We had a couple of bad touches in the last couple of minutes that led to the free kicks,” Reese said, “but we had great team defense. We lined up a wall, we communicated, and our defense executed wonderfully.” Crookston had the ball in the final minute, but the Viking defense kept Crookston near the sidelines and prevented the Pirates from getting a shot.

Crookston is now to 2-8-1 on the season, while Pelican Rapids is now 4-5-2. The Pirates play their regular season finale against Melrose on Saturday.

CCT to Perform “The Glass Menagerie” October 10-13.

Crookston Community Theatre will perform The Glass Menagerie at the Polk County Museum in Crookston on October 10, 11, 12, and 13. The performances will be at 7:30 each night, and tickets are available online. Seating is limited, as the theatre is small, so it is a good idea to get online soon to ensure you have seats for this classic Tennessee Williams Play.

We were given a short summary of the play by Beth Carlson, who plays the mother (Amanda)  in the production. “It’s a very classic tale which only includes four people, The Mother (Amanda), The Daughter(Laura), who has a little bit of a disability, the Son(Tom), who is the narrator who then comes into the story, and a Gentleman Caller (Jim O’Connor).” The story is about Amanda trying to get her daughter, who is somewhat disabled and very, very shy, married.

Carlson says it’s very relatable because it’s a story about family.  “Even though it’s set pre-war, 30’s, the things they are dealing with are family things,” says Carlson. “You are going to find yourself going, oh, that mother is crazy, but I kind of feel her pain.”

Sandy Perkins, Production Coordinator for The Glass Menagerie, says there are still tickets available. The theatre at the Polk County Museum seats about 60 people, so don’t put off getting your seats reserved. When asked why they chose to do The Glass Menagerie at the Museum, Perkins said, “It was a space that we felt would be very appropriate for a small production like this.”

Don’t miss your chance to see a Tennessee Williams classic, The Glass Menagerie, directed by Joyce Johnson, at the Polk County Museum on October 10, 11, 12, and 13.

crookston-airport-thumb978176

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced they secured significant federal funding for infrastructure improvements at Crookston Municipal Airport. The grant provides $455,192 for a new 418-foot taxiway to provide airfield access to the site of a future hangar, bringing the airport into conformity with current standards. This grant funds the final phase, which consists of construction.

“Crookston Municipal Airport is an essential link for residents and businesses in Polk County and beyond,” said Klobuchar. “This federal grant will make needed infrastructure updates to ensure the airport can continue serving travelers for years to come.”

I’m glad to see the Biden-Harris administration once again delivering for travelers in Minnesota and around the country,” said Smith. “Small and regional airports like the Crookston Municipal Airport are vital parts of their communities, and this funding will go directly towards making much-needed infrastructure updates to the runway and surrounding areas.”

This funding is from the Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which provides federal grants for airport infrastructure projects such as runways, taxiways, signage, lighting, and markings.

Pres. Biden, VP Harris visit Georgia, North Carolina to survey damage from Helene

President Joe Biden and the Vice President Kamala Harris. August 1 2024

In separate visits to Georgia and the Carolinas, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Southeast region of the U.S. on Wednesday to survey damage wrought by Hurricane Helene, which is confirmed to have killed 177 people thus far. Hundreds of people remain unaccounted for following Helene’s destruction, with more than 150,000 households have registered for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The president said Tuesday that the cost of the massive storm could stretch into the billions of dollars: ‘We have to jump start this recovery process. This is urgent.’  Biden visited North Carolina taking an aerial tour of some of the hardest-hit parts of the state; while nearly 200 miles to the south in Georgia, Harris was in Augusta to survey Helene’s damage.  Harris shared: ″I’ve been reading and hearing about the work you’ve been doing over the last few days, and I think it really does represent some of the best of what we each know can be done. Especially when we coordinate around local, state, federal resources to meet the needs of people who must be seen, who must be heard. I am now listening.”

Before departing the White House, Biden announced he had directed up to 1,000 active-duty troops to support the North Carolina National Guard. Biden said in a statement: “These soldiers will speed up the delivery of life-saving supplies of food, water, and medicine to isolated communities in North Carolina — they have the manpower and logistical capabilities to get this vital job done, and fast. They will join hundreds of North Carolina National Guard members deployed under State authorities in support of the response.”

Wednesday’s visits by Biden and Harris come shortly after former President Donald Trump traveled to devastated Valdosta, Georgia, to see Helene’s destruction firsthand.
