Katie Morgan thrives off being busy, making her a great EPIC Provider Training Coordinator with RiverView Health’s Information Technology (IT) Department. EPIC (electronic patient information center) is an electronic health records system. For all of her troubleshooting of unexpected glitches, customization of workflows for smoother patient care, and patience in training team members in the latest technology, Katie was recently awarded the Employee of the Month (EOM) honor for September.

It’s been six-and-a-half years since Katie started as a Patient Access representative at RiverView, working in the clinic and Diagnostic Imaging for three years before transferring to her current role. Speaking of staying busy, the Fertile native also coaches Crookston High School volleyball and is the club director for the Crookston Figure Skating Club. When she’s not coaching kids or training EPIC users, she enjoys being outside, lake life with family, any organized sport or activity, and walking in the woods around their farm south of Crookston with her and her husband Connor’s black lab, Daisy.

Weather doesn’t change her love of being outdoors; she enjoys all four seasons, always saying she likes “the next season the best.’’

Of her EOM honor, she shared: “I was so surprised by this award and the wonderful words shared by Caitlyn (Michno, director of Rehab Services). There are so many great employees at RiverView who deserve this award; I would never have thought it would be me! “I work with all departments here and I am supported by each and every one, and I have gotten to truly know and learn from everyone. My team in IT is small but mighty; they are exceptional in trusting me with making decisions, so I know I would not have been able to receive this award without them.

Leadership has created such a great work environment and supports employees’ lives outside of work. I am truly honored to be at RiverView; it is a great place to work!’’

Alfred “Al” Drew – OBIT

al-drew-obit-768x1024742273-1

Alfred “Al” Drew, 85, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully at his home after a long battle with lung cancer on Friday, November 1, 2024, with his loving family by his side.  Al was born in Eugene, Oregon on July 23, 1939, to parents, Steven and Ola (Criswell) Drew.  Al lived most of his young life in Eugene, Oregon, and became a truck driver shortly after High School.

This position not only took him to several different parts of the country, but also led him towards the love of his life, Alice Helget.  The two met one night by chance and would go on to spend 44 years together.  Al was a proud father of three when they met, his children Steven, Rebecca, and Constance “Connie” were happy to welcome Alice as their stepmom.  After marrying Alice, he fathered two more children, Angela “Angie” and Alfred Jr.

Alfred and Alice were married on July 7, 1980, in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and eventually settled in Gentilly, MN, where you could say, “God came knocking.”  A pastor of St. Paul’s Luther Church, as part of a welcome committee, came to the door and the couple felt led to this church.  Due to an unfortunate house fire, Alfred and Alice relocated to Crookston, where they made their home and raised their children.  Alfred was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith later in life, which was a very important aspect to his life.

Al’s children fondly remember going out on the road with their dad, memories they will carry in their hearts going forward forever.  His family will miss his jokes, he always had the best sense of humor.  Every time Angie would tell him she loved him, he would say it first and add, “Beat you this time!”  Al was never afraid to poke at someone he loved, of course, always in good nature; he loved Twinkies and always had to have his buttered bread, even with his sandwiches.  Al was a man of integrity and respect, and was always nitpicky about things being organized.  Alfred also had a deep love for the Vikings and the Twins; but more than anything else, aside from his children, he truly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  His family will always remember him changing diapers, warming bottles, and babysitting for his twin grandchildren, which he was glad to do after his retirement; his grandchildren will miss drinking “Papa’s” tea.

Al drove truck for thirty years before deciding to semi-retire; during that time, he worked at New Flyer and drove bus for Tri-Valley.  A few years ago, Al was sadly diagnosed with lung cancer and would spend the last years of his life bravely fighting the illness with his family’s support every step of the way.  They will always be grateful for the privilege of being by his side during that time, which they were up until his final moment.

May God Bless the Memory of Alfred Drew.

Al is survived by his wife, Alice Drew; Children: Steven Drew, Rebecca Drew, Constance (Steve) Wilson, Angela (Jeremy) Tronnes, and Alfred Jr. Drew; Grandchildren: Ian, Jessica, Dominik, Colton, and Elizabeth; Great-Grandchildren, Frank; a brother, Edward (Marilyn) Drew; as well as many other friends and family members.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Steven and Ola Drew; a sister, Barbara Butterfiled; a Great-Grandson, Gabriel; a former wife, Shirley; as well as many other relatives.

The memorial service honoring Al’s life will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 3:00 PM, with the Rev. Curt Peterson officiating.  Visitation with the family will be held 2 hours prior to the service.  Please join the family for lunch immediately following services for fellowship and a time of reflection.  The Memorial Service will be livestreamed, the link to which can be found by visiting Al’s obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com/obituaries

Former Ohio police officer found guilty in 2020 murder of Andre Hill

Columbus Ohio May 1^ 2022 A succession of police cars lined up in front of precinct.

A former Ohio police officer was convicted of murder Monday in the shooting of Andre Hill, a Black man who was holding a cellphone and keys when he was killed. Adam Coy, who served nearly 20 years with the Columbus police force, shot Hill four times in a garage nearly four years ago. Coy, who is White, was fired after the shooting.

Franklin County Judge Stephen McIntosh set a sentencing date of Nov. 25 for Coy, who is undergoing cancer treatments for Hodgkin lymphoma. Coy faces at least 15 years in prison, with the jury also finding him guilty of reckless homicide and felonious assault. Defense attorney Mark Collin later said they would be appealing the verdict.

Police body camera footage showed Hill, 47, coming out of the garage of a friend’s house holding up a cellphone in his left hand, his right hand not visible, seconds before he was fatally shot by Coy. Almost 10 minutes passed before officers at the scene began to aid Hill; he was pronounced dead at a hospital. Coy told jurors that he thought Hill was holding a silver revolver that turned out to be keys, testifying: “I thought I was going to die.”  However, after he rolled over Hill’s body and saw the keys that he realized there was no gun: “I knew at that point I made a mistake. I was horrified.”

Weeks after the December 2020 shooting, the city of Columbus reached a $10 million settlement with Hill’s family, the largest in city history. The Columbus City Council also passed Andre’s Law, which requires police officers to render immediate medical attention to an injured suspect.

Brian Steel, president of the police union in Columbus, said he was shocked by the murder conviction: “Your split-second decision can now be led to murder. It is absolutely insane. Officers are willing to die for their community, they are willing to die for this job. They do not want to go to prison for this job.”

U.S. Supreme Court to rule on racial dispute involving Louisiana congressional map

The United States Supreme Court is seen in Washington^ DC^ on July 01^ 2024.

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to to decide the ongoing legal redistricting dispute in Louisiana that could determine whether the state maintains a congressional map that includes two majority-Black districts after the 2024 election. The court’s decision to hear the appeal from a group of Black voters and the state marks at least the third time it will be involved in the legal battle over voting lines for Louisiana’s U.S. House districts that were drawn after the 2020 Census. The high court is expected to begin hearing oral arguments before the end of its current term in June; it will have no impact on this year’s election.

According to court filings on behalf of Phillip Callais and 11 other plaintiffs, Louisiana “should be ashamed” of using race in order to draw congressional district lines that “over-represents Black voters” which could result in the loss of GOP control in the House of Representatives.  However, state’s Solicitor General Benjamin Aguinaga wrote in court documents that Louisiana is “stuck in an endless game of ping-pong .. and the State is the ball, not a player, the state will be sued again no matter what it does.”

Louisiana’s Republican-controlled legislature had overridden a veto by Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards over the state’s new congressional map. However after state officials and voting rights advocates had made an emergency judicial request in efforts to finalize the state’s congressional district map in order to meet required legal deadlines, in May the supreme court cleared the way for Louisiana to use its current map with two majority-Black districts for this year’s election.

In January, Louisiana lawmakers approved a new congressional map to increase the number of majority-Black districts to represent the state’s population (which is nearly 1/3 Black). The approval came after a 2022 Supreme Court ruling reinstated Louisiana’s Republican-drawn congressional map, which froze a lower court ruling that says the Republican map violated the Voting Rights Act. Currently, the map leans towards Republicans in districts held by House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise.
