UMC Club Hockey gets back on track with win over Saint John’s

dsc01705-300x200765902-1

The University of Minnesota-Crookston men’s club hockey team soared to a 13-0 win over Saint John’s University at the Crookston Sports Center Friday evening. UMC outshot the Johnnies 70 to 10 in the contest.

FIRST PERIOD
UMC would win the opening faceoff and never look back. The Golden Eagles maintained steady puck control throughout the game’s opening stages, and fired many early shots. The first goal of the evening was scored by UMC just under 8 minutes into the period. Tristan Morenault lasered it in off assists from Jackson Dodds and Aiden Morelli. The Johnnies would get a couple of fast break chances, but two saves by Golden Eagles goalie Tyler Swanson kept the game at 1-0. UMC would put in another goal at the 8:24 mark, as Fox Dodds hit from close range. The Golden Eagles weren’t finished yet, as Tristan Morenault scored his second goal of the evening just under 11 minutes into the game to extend the lead to 3. UMC well controlled the next two minutes, and the Golden Eagles scored a fourth goal at the 13:16 mark. Tyler Lorenz and Ben Hines assisted Mitchell Coleman on the score. UMC’s Dylen Neubauer joined the box score with his first goal of the night coming 16:04 into the period, extending the lead to 5. Saint John’s was able to get off a few shots late, but they were unable to cut into UMC’s lead. UMC’s strong puck control led to them outshooting the Johnnies 30-5 in the period.

SECOND PERIOD
The Golden Eagles started the second period down a man but were able to kill off a penalty committed late in the first period. Just 1:21 into the period, UMC continued to build on their momentum, as Anthony Foster scored to make it 6-0. Saint John’s Michael O’Rourke was called for slashing, and moments later, Sam Mancino committed another penalty for the Johnnies. UMC capitalized on the 5-on-3 with another goal. Fox Dodds added the special teams score on assists from Mason Romfo and Logan Syrup. A second power play goal would make it 8-0 for UMC, as Mitchell Coleman scored his second of the night. Saint John’s decided to swap goalies, as Cole Nelson came in to relieve Ben Monsivais just under 5 minutes into the period.  UMC’s unrelenting offense further controlled the puck, and put the game farther out of reach when Jackson Dodds scored to make it 9-0 at the 12:14 mark. Saint Johns could sneak a few shots but with no success. However, UMC tacked on goal number 10 in the period’s final minutes, as Ben Hines scored his first of the night. UMC would heavily outshoot Saint John’s again during the period, while holding the Johnnies to only four shots.

THIRD PERIOD
The action finally slowed down to start the third period. UMC’s Alexander Bailey would be called for slashing, but the Johnnies missed their only shot in the power play. After the penalty, the teams traded possessions, and the Golden Eagles shifted into more of a keep-away mode. About halfway through the period, the Johnnies would be penalized again, as Carson Border was called for tripping. Saint John’s killed the penalty despite a few close calls. UMC would tack on a late score to make it 11-0 as Fox Dodds put in his third goal of the evening. The Golden Eagles would commit a penalty with about three minutes remaining, but they would further extend the lead on a shorthanded goal from Tyler Lorenz. Lorenz crossed over the goalie and put it through the five-hole to extend the lead to 12-0. In the final minute, UMC added their final goal of the night, a top-shelf shot from Griffin Sonstegard to make it 13-0.

The Golden Eagles improve to 11-4-0, and Saint John’s falls to 2-9-0 ahead of Saturday afternoon’s rematch.

New photos of ‘person of interest’ released in shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

New York City^ NY^ USA - August 20^ 2022: A NYPD Police car in New York City^ USA.

The New York Police Department released two new photos of the ‘person of interest’ in the ongoing manhunt for the masked gunman who shot dead UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a  New York City hotel on Wednesday, in what the NYPD are calling a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack.”

NYPD released the first unmasked images Thursday of the individual wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting, and asked the public for help identifying that individual. The images were taken from a hostel in the Manhattan Valley area of the Upper West Side. Authorities described the gunman as a white male who wore a tan-colored jacket, a black face mask and black-and-white sneakers, and carried a gray backpack.

Additional evidence in the case was discovered, in which shell casings found at the scene had the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” written on them. officials said they are examining whether the words relate to a possible motive involving insurance companies and their responses to claims. ABC News reported that officials said they are examining whether the words relate to a possible motive, with the alliteration  a comment on the tactics that opponents say insurance companies use to delay or deny policyholders’ claims.

Thompson, 50, didn’t travel with any personal security detail despite known threats against him, and was staying at the nearby Marriott hotel across the street before heading to the Hilton Midtown Hotel for the UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference. The CEO was shot multiple times before 7 a.m. ET Wednesday, by the masked gunman who fled on a bike and headed to Central Park before police arrived. Authorities recovered three live rounds and three discharged shell casings from the scene.

Police have asked anyone who might know something about the shooting or the gunman to either report what they know to Crime Stoppers or submit tips anonymously online. The NYPD is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the suspect’s arrest and conviction.

Judge rejects Boeing’s $243M plea deal tied to fatal 737 Max crashes

The latest Aircraft by Boeing. Newly Made Aircraft Boeing named as Boeing 777X its a new variant with variable wingtips. aircraft demonstrating above Dubai. 14-11-2023

A federal judge on Thursday rejected a plea deal between Boeing and the Justice Department, after they agreed to plead guilty to a fraud charge and pay more than $243 million to resolve cases linked to two fatal plane crashes, which killed a total of 346 people in 2018/2019.

According to court filings, Judge Reed O’Connor rejected Boeing’s plea agreement, citing criticism from victims’ family members that Boeing’s deal to have an independent monitor oversee its compliance and safety programs was a “sweetheart deal”. The Judge has given both Boeing and the Justice Department 30 days to update the court on how they plan to proceed in the case.

Boeing agreed to plead guilty to a fraud conspiracy charge in July and pay a fine of $243.6 million, as well as invest about $455 million in compliance and safety programs and implement a third-party monitor to track the company’s compliance with regulations. O’Connor argued that the agreement had improperly required prosecutors to consider diversity and inclusion when selecting the monitor, a consideration that minimized the position’s role, stating “these provisions are inappropriate and against the public interest.” O’Connor also disagreed with the monitor answering to the Justice Department rather than the court, saying the provision would “erroneously marginalize” the court.
