Scruffy Tails is Partnering with BISSELL Pet Foundation for Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope Event

BISSELL Pet Foundation is hosting its Empty the Shelters—Holiday Hope reduced-fee adoption event from December 1 to 17. Scruffy Tails Humane Society is on board and ready to help ensure no pet is in the shelter this holiday season.

More than 400 organizations in 45 states are participating. In the past, this effort has helped more than 300,000 pets find loving homes, making Empty the Shelters the largest funded adoption event in the country. During the event, BISSELL Pet Foundation sponsors reduced adoption fees so shelters can charge $50 or less to take deserving pets from kennels to the couches in their new homes.

Scruffy Tails Humane Society will participate in Empty the Shelters from December 1-14 and currently has eight dogs and multiple cats up for adoption. By participating, Scruffy Tails will be reimbursed for each pet adopted, which allows families to bring home a fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered pet.

We stopped out to Scruffy Tails to speak to Shelter Manager Erin Wilson, and she told us that all but one pet in the shelter was up for adoption during the event.  The youngest in the shelter, Pirate, the adorable kitten, is too young to be neutered in time.  Wilson encourages people to come out and see the animals, hoping to find them all homes. “Our goal is to try and get all of the animals out; that way, we can get new ones in,” says Wilson. “We do have a lot on our surrender list, and with it being winter, there is a lot for cats, wanting to get cats in off the streets.”

Wilson has provided photos of all animals up for adoption and a short bio on each one. I visited with many of the animals while I was at Scruffy Tails, and I hope that everyone reading this will also take some time to visit. Whether you are looking for a companion for a pet you already have, a companion for yourself, or a family pet, this is the perfect time. Visit Scruffy Tail Humane Society and help Empty the Shelters this holiday.

MnDRN is asking hunters and recreationists to report bear den locations

minnesota-department-of-natural-resources-featured523538

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is asking hunters and other recreationists spending time outdoors this fall to report the locations of occupied bear dens they encounter in and around the Brainerd and Duluth areas. Bear researchers with the DNR and University of Minnesota Duluth hope to fit an additional number of bears with GPS tracking collars this winter.

“Getting a few bears collared in winter would really help these studies,” said Andrew Tri, Minnesota DNR bear project leader. “It would allow us to get a whole year of movement data, which we can’t do with bears that we catch and collar in mid-summer.”

The purpose of this research is to document bear movements on the landscape (both rural and urban) and assess the age of first reproduction in these two study areas.

Anyone finding a den in either area should obtain a GPS location (if possible) and call DNR bear research in Grand Rapids at 218-328-8879 or 218-328-8874.

The Minnesota DNR has had a decades-long study on bears collared in the Chippewa National Forest and at Camp Ripley Training Center to assess survival, reproduction and movement. Assessing the age of first reproduction is critical to keeping tabs on the bear population and effectively set harvest quotas.

“Bears can cause conflicts when they live near people, and collaring and tracking bears in the Duluth area will help us better understand how they are using the developed landscape,” said Michael Joyce, UMD wildlife ecologist. “Ultimately, we would like to use the information we gather to help reduce human-bear conflicts and promote coexistence.”

Bear research provides a better understanding of factors that cause populations to change, enabling the Minnesota DNR and partners to better manage and conserve this species.

Separate from the bear den study, the Minnesota DNR also has an online tool that allows people to report bear sightings. The bear sightings tool and more about bear management in Minnesota are available on the Minnesota DNR website (mndnr.gov/bear).

Trump selects Tiffany Trump’s FIL Massad Boulos as senior adviser on Middle East

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen billionaire businessman Massad Boulos, the father-in-law to his daughter Tiffany Trump, as his senior adviser on Middle Eastern affairs.

Trump announced on his Truth Social media platform that Boulos, father of Trump’s son-in-law Michael Boulos, will serve as White House senior adviser on Arab and Middle East affairs. Born to a Christian family in Lebanon, Massad Boulos runs Nigeria-based Boulos Enterprises, which produces and distributes mechanical equipment and motorcycles. Michael Boulos has been married to Trump’s daughter Tiffany since 2022.

Trump said in his announcement of the selection: “I am proud to announce that Massad Boulos will serve as Senior Advisor to the President on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs. Massad is an accomplished lawyer and a highly respected leader in the business world, with extensive experience on the International scene. He has been a longtime proponent of Republican and Conservative values, an asset to my Campaign, and was instrumental in building tremendous new coalitions with the Arab American Community. Massad is a dealmaker, and an unwavering supporter of PEACE in the Middle East. He will be a strong advocate for the United States, and its interests, and I am pleased to have him on our team!”

During the presidential election cycle, it is said that Boulos helped Trump by courting Arab American voters and met in September with Mahmoud Abbas – the leader of the Palestinian Authority who had barred Palestinian officials from meeting with the Trump administration during his first term as president. Boulos, however, told The New York Times after the conference with Abbas that it was purely a personal meeting, adding that he did not advise Trump about it before or after.

Fire officials say that a home explosion in Jefferson City, Missouri over Thanksgiving weekend left the residence in shambles, with six people inside injured – three critically. Jefferson is the state capital, located about 133 miles west of St. Louis.

According to a press release from Jefferson City Fire, the explosion occurred on St. Louis Road in Jefferson City early Saturday morning at 2:44 a.m. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Jefferson City Fire said in the release: “Rescue operations were particularly challenging due to the extensive structural collapse and significant debris. The team had to carefully tunnel through layers of debris to reach the final occupant, who required intensive extrication.” Photos show the explosion left the home almost completely leveled, with responders saying they discovered the six individuals among the debris upon arrival. All six of the individuals were safely removed from the residence by 5:52 a.m.

Emergency responders said of the six individuals injured in the blast, two were transported to Jefferson City Airport and flown to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, with the remaining four people transported by ground to University Hospital. Fire officials also said that two pets were rescued from the collapsed home and are now in the care of animal control.

ABC News’ Missouri affiliate KMIZ reports that Cole County EMS Chief Eric Hoy told the outlet that three of the victims are listed in critical condition and received critical life support. The other three have moderate injuries and are in stable condition.
