Polk County Commissioners approve moving forward with bike paths west of Crookston and Maple Lake

polk-county-government-493767

The Polk County Commissioners met this week at the Polk County Government Center.

SHERIFF’S REPORT
Polk County Sheriff James Tadman told the board that his department had 715 calls in November. The top five calls were 205 for civil process, 104 traffic stops, 87 for school patrol, 26 for animal complaints, 25 for property damage, and 23 for public assistance.

HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
Polk County Engineer Richard Sanders brought several contracts and payments for approval by the board.

The first item was the diesel fuel quotes, and Fertile Oil Company was the lowest responsible bidder. The bid was $2.23 per gallon for the first quarter and $2.29 per gallon for the second through fourth quarters. The quote was 27 cents per gallon less this year than last year, for a total of $136,500. The board unanimously approved the contract.

The second item was a payment of $21,620 to Angus Township after the construction of the roundabout on Highway 75 and County Highway 21 forced more traffic on township roadways. The payment is for an extra blading and gravel invoice to restore the roadways to pre-construction condition. The payment was approved.

The bridge on County Highway 6 over the Lost River has a defective beam, and it will need to be replaced. Sanders asked for the board’s approval of an engineering contract with Widseth for bridge design services for County Highway 6 and another bridge in Chester Township over the Lost River. The location is west of Trail. The contract is for $42,698 and was unanimously approved by the board.

The next item on the agenda was engineering plans for reconstruction/mill and overlay plans for placement of a multi-use trail/bike path along the north side of County Highway 61 from Highway 2 in Crookston past Minakwa Golf Course to Highway 75 bypass. They are looking to place a multi-use trail and more. “We want to reconstruct out by the golf course in an urban section with curb and gutter, storm sewer, bike path along the north side, lighting along the north side,” said Sanders. “It may be the same exact section that is currently east of Highway 2, which is 40 feet between the curb and gutter. We will have the five-foot berm and a 10-foot bike path/pedestrian path out to the west limits of Crookston. We will light the stretch, and that will help to know you’re coming into town at night, and it will help slow down traffic in the 40 mph zone.”

Widseth will do the engineering for the proposed project for $62,960, with completion by May 1, 2025. The board approved the contract.

Sanders brought the resolution of the Polk County bridge replacement priority list (pictured below) and asked for approval of the bridges to help get funding for the projects. The board approved the list.

Sanders said they are in the process of applying for an active transportation grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Sanders asked the commissioners to approve a resolution supporting the County Highway 12 multi-use trail project and grant application. Polk County Highway plans to construct County Highway 12 from County Highway 41 to County Road 231 (near the Pavillion) in 2026. As part of the construction, they are looking at constructing a multi-use trail along the south side of the road. Maple Lake Association favors the trail from Maple Bay to the Pavillion. “I have been working with the Maple Lake Association for at least two or three years trying to figure out how to provide paths along Maple Lake, and this is the stretch that we feel needs to be the first chunk,” said Sanders. “We hope to work on other areas around the lake in the future.”

Police launching investigation after 5 family members are found dead in Utah home

West Valley City. Utah. USA as seen on map

Police are launching an investigation after five family members, including three children, were found dead in a home in Utah on Tuesday. Another minor, age 17, was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound; authorities said that the victims were all shot to death.

A concerned family member discovered the injured 17-year-old boy in the garage of the home Tuesday afternoon, which led to the discovery of the five bodies. The family member had grown concerned after not being able to contact the woman who lived at the residence for some time, and police were dispatched to the house. However, they were unable to make contact with anyone inside and found no emergency. The next day, the family member returned to the house after the woman who lived there failed to show up for work, and gained entrance to the residence via the garage, where she found the injured 17-year-old boy.

According to Roxeanne Vainuku, a spokesperson for the West Valley City Police Department, the deceased victims have been identified as a 42-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, an 11-year-old boy, 9-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl. The circumstances surrounding the deaths were unclear as of Wednesday, and Vainuku said at a news conference:  “Absolutely horrific. This is something that certainly will weigh heavily on investigators in this case,” adding that authorities do not believe there is a suspect on the loose, and believe the shooting is something that was “isolated to this home.”

According to CBS affiliate KUTV, Vainuku said that due to the fact the 17-year-old “is injured and he’s in the hospital, there are some challenges in communicating with him and finding out more information. In any case where people have died, loved ones have been lost, we want to make sure that we do the most absolute thorough job possible so that we can bring justice to the victims.”

1 person killed, nine others hospitalized in Maryland mass shooting

BALTIMORE^ MARYLAND - JULY 29^ 2023: Baltimore Maryland police department sign on police cruiser

A shooting in Baltimore County, Maryland, Tuesday left one person dead and nine others wounded, police said.

Baltimore County Police Department officials responded to the area of Loch Raven Boulevard in Towson around 7:15 p.m. following multiple reports of a shooting, and confirmed in a post on X that the incident took place on Tuesday, Dec. 17, shortly before 7:15 p.m. local time. Baltimore County police wrote in an update on X: “9 people have been transported to area hospitals 1 person is deceased. Around 7:15 p.m. officers responded to the scene following multiple reports of a shooting. This is considered a mass shooting.”

The Baltimore Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene, the agency confirmed to ABC News. Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski called the event a shocking tragedy: “This type of violence is rare in Baltimore County. This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County. These types of incidents are really unheard of here, so it really shocks the conscience.”

Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough later shared at a press conference that one person died at the scene and nine others were taken to local hospitals with injuries, and that authorities believe the incident was targeted: “When officers arrived, they found a vehicle on its side and in flames. Multiple victims were discovered, and the fire department was alerted to provide assistance. This appears to be intentional. We believe the individuals involved knew each other, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

The investigation is still in its early stages. Police are trying to piece together what led to the crash and shooting. Evidence of gunfire was found on the façade of a nearby building, and shell casings were recovered from the area.
