The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball will take on the Pelican Rapids Vikings in a Section 8AA matchup at the Pelican Rapids High School gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
Crookston is 5-14 on the year, while Pelican Rapids is 13-5.

Rose Ann Ulseth – OBIT

Rose Ann Ulseth, 58, of Crookston, passed away in Fargo, ND, on Friday, January 31, 2025.  She was born in International Falls, MN, on November 20, 1966, to parents, Frank and Connie (Richmond) Iraci.  A memorial Mass honoring Rose’s life will be held at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 2:00 PM.  Visitation with the family will be held one-hour prior to Mass.  Please join the family immediately following services for refreshments and fellowship.  Services will be livestreamed, the link to which can be found by going www.stenshoelhouske.com/obituaries and following the prompts.

2025 Grammy Awards: See the complete list of winners

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will honor the best recordings^ compositions^ and artists from September 16^ 2023^ to August 30^ 2024^ chosen by recording acad

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards returned to L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, February 2, with Trevor Noah hosting the ceremony for the fifth year in a row.

Kendrick Lamar earned five Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for his Drake diss track “Not Like Us.” Beyoncé won Best Country Album and took home the coveted Album of the Year award for Cowboy Carter, an award she has never won previously, despite being the most Grammy-nominated artist in history.

Sabrina Carpenter won three Grammys — including Best Pop Vocal Album for Short n’ Sweet; Charli XCX won three awards for her album Brat; and Chappell Roan won the Grammy for Best New Artist.

This year’s ceremony also centered on raising money for the victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. The Academy, along with its MusiCares organization, launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort to raise money for people in the music industry who were affected by the fires, raising and pledging more than $4 million so far.

Sec’y of State Marco Rubio meets with Panamanian President Mulino regarding Panama Canal

On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino to tour the Panama Canal, as the Trump administration makes a push for control of the critical canal. This is Rubio’s first international trip as secretary of state and will include stops in other Latin American countries, as well.

The Panama Canal serves as a shortcut between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. And although the U.S. led the construction of the major waterway that around 40% of the world’s cargo ship traffic now moves through, its control was given to Panama in 1999.

Trump has repeatedly stated that China has too much control of the Panama canal, and that the United States needs to be fully in charge of the vital transportation waterway for economic security; Panamanian President Mulino has refuted those claims, however, he stated on Sunday that his country would not renew an agreement to be part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and added that Panama would seek to work with the U.S. on new investments instead, including infrastructure projects. Mulino also reiterated on Sunday during his meeting with Rubio that his country’s sovereignty over the Panama Canal was not up for debate, and said he addressed the China concerns during their talks.

Victims in fatal crash of medical jet in Pennsylvania are identified

The six passengers traveling aboard the medical jet that crashed shortly upon takeoff  in Northeast Philadelphia Friday night have been identified. All those onboard the Learjet 55 aircraft, including a pediatric patient who recently finished treatment at Shriners Children’s Hospital, were killed in the crash.

A spokesperson for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance said Sunday they were all those on board were Mexican citizens, including the 11-year-old patient, Alentina Guzman Murillo, who was accompanied by her 31-year-old mother Lizeth Murillo Ozuna.  Also killed were Capt. Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, 46, and Copilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, 43, along with Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo and paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla, both 41. A person on the ground in a vehicle also died.

A spokesperson for Shriners Children’s Hospital said in a statement: “It’s extremely hard and extremely difficult, those that were involved directly in her care were very aware that she was going to be traveling home and there had actually been a sendoff for her today.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said Sunday (via CBS NEWS) that the number of injured victims increased from 20 to 22 individuals — five remain hospitalized, three of whom are in critical condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the medical jet departed from a base in Florida around noon and arrived in Northeast Philadelphia around 2:15 p.m., headed to Springfield, Mo.,with the final destination in Tijuana, Mexico. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told reporters there was no indication of a problem radioed to air traffic control before the crash, which left debris scattered across four to five city blocks near Roosevelt Mall. The NTSB said investigators are still looking for the plane’s cockpit voice recorder.

Beyoncé announces ‘Cowboy Carter’ concert tour

Beyoncé has announced she will embark on a tour in support of her “Cowboy Carter” album, taking place later this year. Beyoncé‘s last tour was the 2023 “Renaissance World Tour” for her album “Renaissance.”

The tour announcement came in two Instagram posts made over the weekend, with tour dates and locations yet to be announced. “COWBOY CARTER TOUR 2025,” she wrote on her social accounts and official website, along with a new photo. The first post was a video clip of an LED sign that bore the concert’s name, with the second post sharing an image of herself with bleached-blonde hair.

Earlier this year, the singer postponed an announcement planned for Jan. 14 due to the Los Angeles-area wildfires. Beyoncé released a statement Jan. 13 postponing the planned announcement: “The Jan. 14 announcement will be postponed to a later date due to the devastation caused by the ongoing wildfires around areas of Los Angeles. I continue to pray for healing and rebuilding for the families suffering from trauma and loss. We are so blessed to have brave first responders who continue to work tirelessly to protect the Los Angeles community. To join our efforts in supporting those impacted, please visit @BeyGOOD. The Crookston Pirate Dance team competed in the Section 4A Dance Championships in Hawley this weekend and finished seventh place in Jazz and 9th place in kick. The top three teams advance to the MSHSL State Dance Competition.

410 Ingersoll Ave to be considered for a Conditional Use Permit for a daycare facility at Mondays City Council Meeting

The Crookston City Council will meet on Monday, February 3, at 5:30 at City Hall in the Council Chambers.

There will be one presentation for the evening. Rani A. Bhattacharyya, Community Economics Extension Educator for the University of Minnesota Crookston, will present on The Crookston Retail Trade Analysis and Local Options Sales Tax.

The consent agenda for Monday’s Council meeting includes approval of minutes from both the City Council meeting on January 21 and the Roles and Responsibilities workshop on January 27, 2025. Also on the consent agenda are resolutions to approve City of Crookston Bills and Disbursements for $302,513.99, approve the Confidence Learning Center application for Lawful Gambling Premise at the Crookston Eagles, the approval of the City Council Committee Composition for 2025 (updated) and apply for a MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Federal Recreational Trail Grant Program to match the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant. Funds from this grant would cover some of the expenses of the Fairfax Trail Extension Project.  The application is due February 28, 2025.

There are two items on the regular agenda. The first is a resolution regarding a conditional use permit with respect to parcel 82.03775.01, real property address 410 Ingersoll Avenue, to allow a daycare/licensed childcare facility.  Emily Ricard runs a licensed daycare out of her home and wants to lease the property at 410 Ingersoll to run her daycare as she finds it difficult with space restraints to run efficiently out of her home.  Ricard has a lease agreement with property owner Jake Leas.  The property at 410 Ingersoll is located within a Heavy Industrial Zone. The item came before the Planning Commission of the City of Crookston on January 22, 2025, for review.  The Crookston Planning Commission recommends the Crookston City Council grant a conditional use permit to allow use as a daycare/licensed childcare facility. Ricard said at the Planning Commission meeting that this space would also allow her to take up to two more children into her daycare possibly.

The second item on the regular agenda is the closed session to discuss the City Administrator’s Performance.  The meeting will be re-opened for Council Reports and Adjournment.
