Vatican says Pope Francis remains in ‘critical’ condition with early kidney failure

Pope Francis during his weekly general audience in the Paul VI hall. VATICAN CITY^ VATICAN - 18 JANUARY 2023

The press office for the Vatican said Sunday that Pope Francis, 88, has suffered from some kidney failure as he recovers from double pneumonia.  The Pope’s condition remained “critical” on Sunday, but according to the Vatican the pontiff hasn’t experienced any more “respiratory crises” since Saturday evening.

In its latest update on Sunday afternoon, the Vatican said the pope was given two units of concentrated red blood cells “with benefit and an increase in hemoglobin level. Thrombocytopenia has remained stable; however, some blood tests show an initial, slight, renal insufficiency, which is under control. High-flow oxygen therapy through the nasal cannula is continuing. The Holy Father continues to be vigilant and well oriented. The complexity of the clinical picture, and the time needed for the pharmacological therapies to produce results, mean that the prognosis remains uncertain.”

On the Pope’s official account on X, he shared on Sunday: “I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children. Thank you for your closeness, and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world!”

Pope Francis has reportedly remained in good spirits and is not on any life support machines apart from oxygen during asthmatic episodes. He has now been hospitalized for over a week, with doctors telling reporters that their biggest concern is that the bacteria from his lung infections could enter his bloodstream and cause sepsis. Gemelli Hospital doctors have stated that his illness is not life-threatening, with Dr. Sergio Alfieri sharing: “Is he out of danger? No. But if the question is ‘is he in danger of death’, the answer is ‘no’.”

Ukrainian Pres. Zelenskyy says he would give up presidency in exchange for peace or NATO membership

Volodymyr Zelenskyy^ President of Ukraine^ takes part in a joint briefing on the 33rd anniversary of the independence of Ukraine on August 24^ 2024 in Kyiv^ Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a press conference in Kyiv on Sunday he would be willing to step down from the presidency if doing so meant peace for Ukraine — adding he would also do so if it meant Ukraine would be granted NATO membership.

Zelenskyy made the comments on Sunday during a forum of government officials in Kyiv (marking the three-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine): “If it is peace for Ukraine, and if you really want me to leave my post, I’m ready. Alternatively, I can trade this for NATO membership, if such conditions exist, immediately, so we don’t have lengthy discussions. I’m focusing on Ukraine’s security today, not in 20 years. And I don’t intend to stay in power for decades. This is my focus and my greatest aspiration.”

Zelenskyy’s statements come amid an ongoing public dispute with President Donald Trump, after the U.S. and Russia resumed high-level talks last week with several senior Trump administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, met with Russian officials in Saudi Arabia. Trump accused Zelenskyy of being a “dictator without elections”. Their war or words escalated last week when Trump suggested that the Ukrainian president was responsible for starting the war between Russia. In response, the Ukrainian president accused Trump of living in a “disinformation bubble” and pushing Kremlin talking points.

When asked about Trump on Sunday, Zelenskyy told reporters in Ukrainian: “we are partners and I want him on our side  There is no space for emotions. I have pragmatic position. I can’t name these words a compliment, but what can I do? I am the elected president by 73% of Ukrainian people. After the martial law, there will be elections. Perhaps he will say something good about me. It is more important what Ukrainians think about me.”

Senate confirms Kash Patel as FBI Director in narrow 51-49 vote

The Senate Intelligence Committee examines the nomination of Kashyap Patel for Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. January 30^ 2025 - Washington DC

Kash Patel was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday afternoon to serve as Director of the FBI.

The Senate narrowly confirmed Patel along party-lines with a vote of 51-49; only two Republicans — Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — joined Democrats in voting to oppose Patel.

Collins explained her decision to vote against Patel’s confirmation, saying there is a need for an FBI director who is “decidedly apolitical” and Patel’s “time over the past four years has been characterized by high profile and aggressive political activity… [his] past statements and actions “cast doubt on Mr. Patel’s ability to advance the FBI’s law enforcement mission in a way that is free from the appearance of political motivation.”

Murkowski shared a statement saying her opposition to Patel “stem[med] from his own prior political activities and how they may influence his leadership,”adding that the FBI “must be trusted as the federal agency that roots out crime and corruption, not focused on settling political scores. Murkowski said she was “disappointed that when [Patel] had the opportunity to push back on the administration’s decision to force the FBI to provide a list of agents involved in the January 6 investigations and prosecutions, he failed to do so.”

FBI directors are appointed to 10-year terms but can be removed by the president. Chris Wray, whom the president appointed in 2017, resigned at the end of the Biden administration after Pres. Trump said he would be firing him upon taking office.

Mitch McConnell announces retirement from Senate, will not seek reelection in 2026

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) addresses the Republican National Convention at the Quicken Arena in Cleveland^ Ohio Cleveland Ohio^ USA^ July 19^ 2016

Former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday he will be retiring from the Senate, and will not seek reelection in 2026.

McConnell, who turned 83 on Thursday, announced in a floor speech where he reflected on his decades-long political career: “seven times my fellow Kentuckians have sent me to the Senate. Every day in between I have been humbled by the trust they place in me to do their business, right here. Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor for an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last.”

McConnell said that he still has “unfinished business to attend to,” and that the Senate must fight for national security priorities and greater resources for defense: “thanks to Ronald Reagan’s determination, the work of strengthening America’s hard power was well underway when I arrived in the Senate, but since then, we’ve allowed that power to atrophy, and today, a dangerous world threatens to outpace the work of rebuilding it. So lest any of our colleagues still doubt my intentions for the remainder of my term, I have some unfinished business to attend to.” McConnell added that he will leave the Senate “with great hope for the endurance of the Senate as an institution. There are any number of reasons for pessimism, but the strength of the Senate is not one of them.”

Following his speech, McConnell received a standing ovation from his colleagues on both sides of the aisle. McConnell is the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history. First elected in 1984, the Kentuckian intends to serve the remainder of his term ending in January 2027. McConnell has dealt with a series of medical episodes in recent years, including injuries sustained from falls and times when his face briefly froze while he was speaking.
