The Highland Park, Illinois parade shooting suspect has changed his plea to guilty on the first day of the trial (per Chicago ABC affiliate WLS). The trial was expected to last three to five weeks, and see nearly all shooting survivors take the stand.

Shooting suspect Robert E. “Bobby” Crimo III, 24, pleaded guilty at the start of the trial to all 21 counts of first-degree murder (three counts of each person killed) and 48 counts of attempted murder. He is accused of killing seven people and injuring dozens of others in the mass shooting at a 2022 Fourth of July parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park. (from NBC News.). He is now scheduled to be sentenced on April 23; he faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

Crimo was arrested several hours after the Independence Day shooting and confessed to firing more than 80 rounds into the parade crowd from a nearby rooftop.  After leaving the murder weapon from the Highland Park shooting in an alley near the scene, prosecutors said Crimo was armed with a second rifle and 60 rounds of ammunition while in Wisconsin. Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Chris Covelli stated at the time that Crimo “seriously contemplated using the firearm he had in his vehicle to commit another shooting in Madison. Following the attack, Crimo exited the roof, dropped his rifle, and he blended in with the crowd and escaped.” He was dressed as a woman on the day of the attack and wore makeup to hide his facial tattoos to blend in with the crowd, according to prosecutors.

Crimo had originally pleaded not guilty in August 2022 to all criminal charges after he was accused of opening fire from a rooftop during the parade. Crimo was expected to accept a plea deal in June 2024, but later rejected the deal and keep his plea of not guilty.

Those killed in the attack were married couple Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35; 88-year-old Stephen Straus; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78, Eduardo Uvaldo, 69, Katherine Goldstein, 64 and Jacquelyn Sundheim, 63.

2 killed, several injured after vehicle drives into crowd in Mannheim, Germany

Mannheim^ Germany^ September 15^ 2024 View over the area including Ludwigshafen during a flight in a small plane

At least two people were killed and several others were seriously injured when a German man drove a vehicle into a crowd of people in the western  city of Mannheim, Germany on Monday, during an annual carnival celebration. Mannheim has a population of 326,000 and is about 52 miles south of Frankfurt.

In statements posted on social media, Mannheim police confirmed an ongoing operation after “a 40-year-old suspect drove a car into a group of people who were in the Planken area of Mannheim city center. Two people were killed and five seriously injured.” Police stated they “were able to arrest the 40-year-old German suspect from Rhineland-Palatinate [about 90 miles from Mannheim]”. They said “at the current stage of the investigation, it is not assumed that there is a political background” to the incident.

The incident came as crowds gathered in cities across Germany for parades to mark the Christian Carnival season, on what Christian Germans mark as Rose Monday, the highlight of their carnival season that takes place on Shrove Monday, before the Lenten period begins on Ash Wednesday.

Video footage from the Planken shopping district area near Paradeplatz Square in the center of Mannheim showed shoppers standing outside an area cordoned off by police tape and strewn with debris. In addition to the two people killed, 10 people were injured, five seriously. Police have not said if the driver under arrest deliberately plowed into the crowd or whether it was accidental.

Story by Hunter Plante (UMC Athletics)
For the second year in a row, Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball has a player named to an All-NSIC team. Reid Grant was named to the Second Team All-NSIC earlier today. Grant joins his backcourt partner from a year ago, Blaize Sagna, as back-to-back All-NSIC team members.

It’s the first time in program history that the Golden Eagles have had two different players named to an all-conference team in back-to-back years.

Antwan Kimmons of Concordia-St. Paul was named the NSIC Player of the Year. Kimmons averaged over 24 points, six rebounds and five assists per game this season for the league-leading Golden Bears. Luke Haertle of Winona State was named the Newcomer of the Year and Creighton Morisch of Sioux Falls was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year.

Matt Fletcher was named the NSIC Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Bears to a 20 win season.

What a year it was for Grant. The senior from Johnston, Iowa started all 28 games for the Golden Eagles and was top-five nationally in minutes played per game and had five games this season playing 40 minutes or more, including a school record 47 minutes played against UTampa earlier this year. Grant led the Golden Eagles in minutes played (1032), minutes played per game (36.9), field goals made (159), field goals attempted (429), three-point makes (62), three-point attempts (203), points per game (16.3) and assists (125). Grant was also top-10 in the conference in a number of those categories.

Grant finished the season with 22 games with more than 10 points, including a stretch to end the season where he finished in double-figures in 12 of the Golden Eagles final 13 games. Grant scored a career-high 35 points against Wayne State College. Grant also set a school record for assists in a game with 11 against the Spartans of Tampa.

Climax-Fisher Boys Basketball falls to Northern Freeze in Section 8A play-in

m6486026

The Climax-Fisher Knights boys basketball team’s season came to an end on Monday as they were defeated by the Northern Freeze by a score of 82-39 in Karlstad in a Section 8A play-in game.

FIRST HALF –
The Freeze made sure to start with a bang, feeding Avynn Ryba early, and the 6’5 center proved to be a near unstoppable force for the Knights, especially when he was working in tandem with Alex Bray, who is 6’3. Both players dominated the post, and Bray made two 3-pointers early to give the Freeze an Early 12-5 lead. At 17-7, Climax-Fisher called a timeout hoping to reset, but the Freeze took advantage of the break and continued to push. Trig Anderson hit a 3-pointer off the bench to spark an 8-0 run out of the timeout to put the Freeze up 18. After Tyler Evitts cut the lead down to 14, The Freeze exploded again, and ended up finishing the half on a 21-6 run. Their defense was stifling and they outrebounded the Knights by nearly double, and that allowed them to take a 48-19 lead into the intermission.

SECOND HALF –
As the second half started, the Knights began play without Tyler Evitts, who picked up his third foul, and then a technical foul, putting him at 4 fouls before the first half came to an end. As a result, the Freeze had a drastic height advantage, and continued to take advantage of it with layups and drive-and-kick plays. At 68-28, the Freeze began emptying their bench, and the Knights chose to put Evitts back in, but he committed a charging foul and fouled out with 12:27 remaining in the game. That eliminated any and all hope that the Knights had remaining, and the Freeze continued to pull away. Both teams got every member of their varsity roster into the game, with the Freeze compiling 30 of their 82 points from the bench. All in all, the Freeze outscored the Knights 34-20 in the second half and cruised to an 82-39 win.

Climax-Fisher’s season ends with a record of 3-23. Northern Freeze improves to 12-14 and will take on Fertile-Beltrami on Thursday.

South Carolina governor declares state of emergency as wildfires erupt across South and North Carolina

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster address the crowd at the Trump Rally at the North Charleston Coliseum. North Charleston^ SC - February 28^ 2020

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a State of Emergency as thousands of South Carolina residents remain under an evacuation order after wildfires have affected as least 1,200 acres across the state.

The South Carolina State Fire Marshal said Sunday that firefighters were battling 175 wildfires that erupted across South and North Carolina amid windy and dry conditions, threatening homes and prompting evacuations, in an ongoing response operations to more than 175 wildfires that have burned a combined 4,200 acres across the state — including blazes burning in Horry, Spartanburg, Oconee, Union and Pickens counties.

One of the biggest wildfires raging Sunday morning was threatening residents in the Carolina Forest near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in Horry County, as well as the quick-spreading fire in the Carolina Forest which has burned more than 1,200 acres by Sunday morning and was threatening the communities of Walker Woods and Avalon, according to the South Carolina Forest Commission. The fire was 0% contained, officials said.

Governor McMaster said in a statement: “This State of Emergency ensures that our first responders, who are working tirelessly and risking their lives to protect our communities from these wildfires, have the resources they need, Dangerous wildfire conditions require that a statewide burning ban remain in effect until further notice. Those who violate this ban will be subject to criminal prosecution.”

As of March 1, 2025, the South Carolina Forestry Commission issued a State Forester’s Burning Ban for all counties. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, prescribed burning and campfires: “While a majority of the current wildfire activity is concentrated in the Pee Dee region, the rest of the state is experiencing a dramatic uptick in wildfires, straining the capacity of Forestry Commission firefighters and local emergency response personnel to respond.”
