RiverView Health is reminding those 45 and older to schedule a screening colonoscopy

dr-vibeto-colonoscopy-services-at-rv-1-scaled-e1745335539605-1024x710411290-1

Butt Seriously…Get a colonoscopy at RiverView Health.

You may have seen RiverView’s latest colonoscopy campaign on billboards or social media. The initial goal is to catch your attention. The ultimate goal is to get you in for a routine screening that could save your life.

If “butt” doesn’t get your attention, maybe the facts will: In the United States, colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and the fourth-leading cause in women, according to the American Cancer Society. It’s expected to cause about 52,900 deaths in 2025. The good news in the fight against colorectal cancer is that death rates have been dropping in older adults for several decades. Screening colonoscopies are reported to be a big reason for this shift. Colorectal polyps are now being found more often by screening colonoscopies and removed before they can develop into cancers. Screening also results in many colorectal cancers being found earlier, when they are likely to be easier to treat.

When caught early, colorectal cancer is 90% treatable. However, in people younger than 50, death rates increased by 2.4% per year from 2012 to 2021. For this reason, the recommended screening age was decreased to 45 in 2021. Statistics show that if everyone 45 and older were screened regularly, as many as half of the deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided.

Screening Time

Brian Grunhovd, of Fertile, had his first colonoscopy in January at RiverView Health. Having no family history of colorectal cancer, Grunhovd’s trigger for the screening was simply the fact that he was 45, and his primary care provider, Erika Beckett, CNP, recommended it while he was having his annual appointment in December. Fast-forward just a few weeks, and he had completed his pre-procedure appointment with Dr. Brett Vibeto, a general surgeon at RiverView, who would perform the colonoscopy. After a day of preparation, which Grunhovd reported was much easier than he anticipated; he was in Crookston for the procedure on Jan. 23. From start to finish, he spent about 2 ½ hours at RiverView. He felt well enough to go out for dinner that evening.

During Grunhovd’s procedure, Dr. Vibeto removed one polyp and sent it to be biopsied. Fortunately, the report returned stating that the polyp was benign, giving Grunhovd the “all clear.”  However, because a polyp was present, Grunhovd will need to return for a repeat colonoscopy in seven years. The timeframe for colonoscopy screenings is every 10 years if nothing was found in a patient’s previous screening.

Colonoscopy vs. Other Screens

“Colorectal cancer screening is important, whether it’s a colonoscopy or Cologuard,” Dr. Vibeto stated. “It’s a vital part of health maintenance.”

Cologuard is a stool DNA test for colorectal cancer that RiverView offers. While Cologuard may be more convenient and less invasive, a positive result (indicating potential precancerous polyps) requires a colonoscopy for further evaluation and potential polyp removal. According to Dr. Vibeto, about 30% of patients have polyps. Cologuard is also less accurate than a colonoscopy. However, Dr. Vibeto recommends any screening tool for colorectal cancer. “As long as someone is doing something, it’s important. All screenings are good,” Dr. Vibeto shared.

Summing up his experience, Grunhovd said he was happy with how quickly he was scheduled for his pre-procedure visit and the colonoscopy. The entire process took only weeks. “Overall, the prep was pretty easy, I came in for the procedure, fell asleep, and that was it,” he reported. “Peace of mind is probably the best part about getting screened. Now I know I’m clear.” Talk to your primary care provider to determine when you should start screening. You may need to begin screening earlier than 45 if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, or have a personal history of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s Disease.

You do not need a referral for a colonoscopy unless your insurance requires it. Call 281.9595 to schedule a pre-procedure appointment or for more information. Butt Seriously…get a colonoscopy at RiverView Health.

Guy Miles Remme – OBIT

Guy Miles Remme, 72, of Neillsville, MN, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his beloved family on Friday, November 8, 2024.  He was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on May 11, 1952, to parents Myron and Helen (Schumacher) Remme.

Guy was nothing short of man who held integrity and respect to the highest standard and demonstrated that when he entered the United States Marine Corp. in 1969, receiving an honorable discharge from service in 1972, having earned the nickname ‘Tut’ while serving.  Shortly after he was relieved of his duties, he married the woman he would spend the rest of his life with, Marilyn Nelson; the couple married on November 15, 1975 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

They had three children:  Christopher, Nathan and Summerlee Remme, who they all raised them in Grand Forks.  For 20 years, Guy worked for North Dakota State Mill and Elevator, making his way to Head Miller.  The value of hard work was always important to Guy, but aside from hard work, he found value in the simple things in life that brough him a great deal of joy.  Like golfing; if he wasn’t working you could find him on the golf course with his best friend, George Perrin.  Whether it was before work or after work, you could find the two on the green almost every day.  Loyalty was important to Guy; he and George shared a friendship that lasted more than fifty years.

Guy was also loyal to his family; at his core he was most certainly a family man.  Guy cherished being a father and grandfather.  He and his wife eventually moved to and settled in Neillsville, MN, where they lived the remainder of Guy’s life.  His family will miss his big sense of humor, his bluntness, how they could never sit in his chair, and how he was as a person; Guy would give you the shirt off of his back, even if he didn’t know you.  Even though he is no longer with us in body, they will continue to carry love and respect for him forever and always.

May God Bless the Memory of Guy Miles Remme.

Guy is survived by his wife, Marilyn Remme, of Neillsville; sister Trudy Boleen of Mankato, MN; Children:  Christopher (Michelle) Remme of Bismarck, ND, Nathan (Kasey) Remme and Summerlee Thomas (Remme) of East Grand Forks, MN; and 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and beloved dog, Romeo; Friends:  George Perrin, Roxy Hecht, and Reannen Blake, as well as many additional relatives and friends who will remember him fondly.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Myron and Helen Remme and two brothers.

A celebration of life will be planned for Guy Remme at the American Legion Post 157, East Grand Forks, MN, at 2:00 PM on May 3, 2025.

Passengers safely evacuated after Delta flight catches fire at Orlando airport

Boeing 737 and 757 Delta parked on Orlando International Airport on September 4^ 2012

A Delta Airlines flight with more than 200 passengers on board caught fire Monday in Florida while on the runway, with the passengers forced to evacuate onto the tarmac at Orlando International Airport after one of the plane’s engines caught fire.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Delta Airlines Flight 1213 was preparing for takeoff from OIA at approximately 11:15 a.m. when the fire broke out in the tailpipe of one of the two engines of the aircraft, an Airbus A330. Following standard safety procedures, the crew initiated the evacuation after the flames were spotted.

Emergency slides were deployed, and all 282 passengers (along with 10 flight attendants and two pilots) exited the aircraft safely. The flight was en route to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta. Delta confirmed there were no immediate reports of injuries, and a replacement aircraft was arranged to complete the journey for affected passengers. An Orlando International Airport spokesperson confirmed the fire was extinguished after emergency crews responded quickly to the scene.

Delta said in a statement Monday: “We are grateful for our customers’ understanding and sincerely apologize for the disruption. We thank our customers for their patience and sincerely apologize for the situation. Safety is our top priority, and our teams are working diligently to ensure passengers reach their destinations as quickly as possible.”

The exact cause of the engine fire is still unknown. Delta stated that its maintenance team would inspect the aircraft, and the FAA has launched an investigation.

Gunman in 2019 El Paso Walmart attack pleads guilty to capital murder

Flowers^ posters^ toys and other memorabilia left for the victims of the Walmart shooting on 3 August 2019. El Paso^ Texas / USA - August 2019

The man responsible for a racially motivated attack that left 23 people dead at a Walmart in El Paso in 2019 entered a guilty plea to capital murder charges in a Texas state courtroom on Monday. His guilty plea means he will receive an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole. At the federal level, he has already been handed 90 consecutive life sentences after pleading guilty to hate crimes and firearms violations.

Patrick Crusius, now 26, formally admitted to the crimes in court on Monday. Crusius admitted to intentionally targeting Hispanic people on August 3, 2019, when he opened fire at a busy Walmart in the border city, filled with shoppers from both the U.S. and Mexico.

Judge Sam Medrano asked Crusius during the proceedings if he was pleading guilty solely because he was indeed guilty; Crusius replied without hesitation: “Yes, your honor.”  Crusius was then directly addressed in court by Judge Medrano, who condemned his actions and emphasized the strength and unity of the El Paso community in the aftermath: “You came here to spread fear and destroy lives, targeting a community that would have embraced you. Instead of sowing division, you brought people together. Instead of silencing them, you amplified their voices. El Paso stood tall — more united, more courageous.”

According to El Paso County District Attorney James Montoya, the death penalty was taken off the table after prosecutors consulted with the victims’ families, many of whom expressed a desire to bring the case to a close. Defense attorney Joe Spencer revealed that Crusius had long struggled with schizoaffective disorder — a condition associated with hallucinations, delusions, and severe mood disturbances — and that he had fallen under the influence of radical content online.

At the time of the shooting, Crusius was a 21-year-old college dropout from near Dallas. Authorities say he drove over 700 miles to El Paso, posted a white supremacist manifesto online referring to a so-called “Hispanic invasion,” and then opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle in and around the Walmart. The victims included a 15-year-old student athlete, elderly grandparents, immigrants, a retired bus driver, a teacher, skilled tradesmen, and multiple Mexican citizens who had crossed the border on everyday shopping trips.
