There was a Crookston Park Board Meeting on Monday, April 14, at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall in the Conference Room. After the minutes from the February 10th meeting were approved, the board moved to the Regular Agenda.

On the regular agenda for the meeting were updates on the Crookston Sports Center. “We did some CSC updates. What’s going on is me, along with Scott Butt, Shirley Iverson, and Corky Reynolds, talked about new things going into the CSC,” says Parks and Re Director Jake Solberg. “Just some things like a maze board, a tic tac toe board, and little fun activities for kids.” These activities are being made possible by donations from both the Crookston Community Fund and Rydell of Grand Forks. The two businesses donated $7,500 each with the intent that the $15,000 be used to bring more activities to the CSC for the younger kids while they are there with their families for games and events. Solberg talked to the board about the items he wants to purchase with the funds.

The board was also updated on the turf being put down in the CSC and the new flooring that will be installed this spring. The Legacy Fund makes both of these projects possible. “Another item from the CSC is from the Legacy Fund. We got some turf and are also putting in some new flooring in the entire arena, upstairs, on the top level,” says Solberg. “More to come on that, but that is one of the items we discussed.” The board was also updated on how Spring/Summer Registration has been going since it opened. “Registration is kind of slow right now. You know, we are only open for another roughly three weeks,” says Solberg. People need to register. May 4 is the last day we are open, and then registration closes. If you have not registered, please get online. If not, you can call us at 218-281-1242; that’s our office.”

That covered the agenda for the meeting.  The board did discuss a few other items before adjourning the meeting. The first was the Crookston Pool.  It recently came to Solberg’s attention that a heat exchanger at the pool was not working correctly, and the pool water was not being heated. “One of the heat exchangers is clogged, so this week, it will be getting fixed,” says Solberg. “The water is just getting colder daily as there is no heat pushing in to warm up from the boiler, but it should be getting fixed this week, and we’ll go from there.”

Lastly, Solberg was asked to let the board know how the Pickleball Tournament at UMC this past weekend went. He reported that the tournament had 32 teams from all over the state and North Dakota and that it was a success, raising $1600 for the Pickleball Clubs and Men’s Volleyball Club Team at UMC.

The next Parks and Rec Board Meeting will be on Monday, May 12, at 4:30 p.m.

Celebrate the Young Child event to take place at Washington School on Earth Day

img_7761-768x1024562171-1

Every year, the Celebrate the Young Child Collaborative puts on three events for the youngest children in the Crookston community in an effort to support the children and their families at this critical time in their growth. The third event for Celebrate the Young Child is coming up on Tuesday, April 22, and we caught up with Early Childhood Coordinator Gina Gunderson to find out what is planned for it.

This third and final event of the year usually takes place at Crookston High School, but this year, it will be taking place at Washington School. “It’s actually going to be at Washington School this year, which is new; it’s typically been at the High School,” says Gunderson. “We are hoping for a nice day so we can be outside and play. We have our great playground and green space.”

The event falling on Earth Day made for creative planning. “We are excited that it falls on Earth Day this year, so we decided to just go with that theme and embrace the magic of nature on Earth Day,” says Gunderson. “We will be doing a lot of hands-on activities that focus on the amazing earth we have.”

What else can you look forward to while participating in the Celebrate the Young Child Earth Day event? “We offer a light meal during the event,” says Gunderson. “Lots of community resources. We will have booths here so families can walk around and see what great resources we have in our community while their children are playing.”

Families with children aged birth to age eight are encouraged to attend the Celebrate the Young Child event.  There is so much information available to families at these events and lots of activities to keep the children busy. “ Our Celebrate the Young Child Collaborative consists of Polk County Public Health, the Crookston Public Library, RiverView Health, Our Savior’s Lutheran School, UMC, and Crookston Public Schools,” says Gunderson. “They all bring an activity to do as well. Riverview typically does an obstacle course, which is a really big hit. I think head start will bring sensory tables again; we usually have the parachute here. We’ve done face painting in the past, but this year, we are going to do Earth Day tattoos.”

Mark your calendar if you have children ages birth to eight, and make sure to come and attend this fun, free, family-oriented event on Tuesday, April 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Washington School.

Suspect in custody after overnight fire at Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home

Gov. Josh Shapiro speaks as Treasury Secretary Yellen introduce IRS Tax Tool to Pennsylvania residents during visit. Philadelphia^ PA USA^ July 30^ 2024

Pennsylvania State Police said during a news conference that a person is in custody regarding the fire set to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s official residence in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on Sunday.  Police had stated that the arsonist had caused a “significant amount of damage” to Shapiro’s home.  Shapiro said during a news conference that he, his wife, their four children, two dogs and another family that had celebrated Passover on Saturday were inside the home when they were awakened by state troopers.

Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris said at a Sunday afternoon news conference that they have identified the man in custody as Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, PA. Balmer is said to have used a homemade incendiary device and evaded police who knew there had been a breach, with authorities stating that the suspect hopped over a fence surrounding the property and forcibly entered the residence before setting it on fire.

Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo said that forthcoming charges will include attempted murder, terrorism, attempted arson and aggravated assault, and emphasized that the investigation into the fire is ongoing.

PA State Police had earlier said in a statement: “On April 13, 2025, at approximately 2:00 a.m., members of the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded to the Governor’s Residence, located on North Front Street, Harrisburg City, Dauphin County, for the report of a fire. While the investigation is ongoing, the State Police is prepared to say at this time that this was an act of arson. While the fire was successfully extinguished, it caused a significant amount of damage to a portion of the residence. The Governor and his family were present in a different part of the residence. They were evacuated safely and were not injured. There is a reward of up to $10,000 offered through PSP Tips for the arrest and conviction for the individual(s) responsible. Anyone with information should call 1-800-4PA TIPS (1-800-472-8477). No additional information will be released at this time. However, this is a fast-moving investigation, and details will be provided as appropriate.

In a statement posted to social media, Shapiro wrote: “Last night at about 2AM, my family and I woke up to bangs on the door from the Pennsylvania State Police after an arsonist set fire to the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg. The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire was on the scene and while they worked to put out the fire, we were evacuated from the Residence safely by Pennsylvania State Police and assisted by Capitol Police. Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished. Every day, we stand with the law enforcement and first responders who run towards danger to protect our communities. Last night, they did so for our family – and Lori and I are eternally grateful to them for keeping us safe. @PAStatePolice is on the scene leading this investigation and will keep the public updated.”

The Governor and his wife share four children together, Sophia, Jonah, Max and Reuben (Sophia and Jonah are legal adults, and Max and Rueben are minors). Just hours before the attack on the residence, the governor – who is Jewish – offered Passover well wishes and shared a photo of his Seder table on social media, writing on X: “From the Shapiro family’s Seder table to yours, happy Passover and Chag Pesach Sameach!

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said in an X post that he was “relieved” the governor and his family were safe, adding that “the Office of Attorney General stands ready with any resources needed to find the culprit of this senseless act of violence.”

White House releases results of President Trump’s physical, stating he ‘remains in excellent health’

President Donald Trump BEDMINSTER^ NEW JERSEY - 19 NOVEMBER 2016

The White House released the results of President Trump’s annual physical on Sunday, with White House physician Capt. Sean Barbabella detailing in a memo that the president remains in “excellent health.” The president underwent his annual physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday, which included diagnostic and laboratory testing.

Trump, 78, had his last known comprehensive examination in September 2023, in which he released limited details. Mr. Trump’s last annual physical as president occurred in June 2020, with the White House stating he weighed 244 pounds, and his blood pressure was 121/79.  Trump’s latest physical states that the president weighs 224 pounds, and his blood pressure was 128/74.

Trump exhibits “robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and general physical function,” according to the report from  Barbabella, who said he also performed a comprehensive neurological examination, which revealed “no abnormalities in his mental status.”

The report revealed that Trump underwent a colonoscopy in July 2024, which “revealed diverticulosis and a benign polyp.” Gastroenterologists recommended that the president should have a follow-up colonoscopy in 2027. The president passed his Montreal Cognitive Assessment with a perfect score of 30 out of 30, the same score he received on that assessment in 2018. He was also screened for depression and anxiety and had “scores within the normal range for both,” and Barbabella noted in his diagnostic summary that Trump has scarring on his right hear from a gunshot wound, referring to the assassination attempt on the president in Butler, Pennsylvania, last summer.

Barbabella concluded that: “President Trump’s days include participation in multiple meetings, public appearances, press availability, and frequent victories in golf events. President Trump exhibits excellent cognitive and physical health and is fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”
