A single tree can offer shade, wildlife habitat, and a place for neighbors to gather. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites all Minnesotans to celebrate Arbor Day and Arbor Month by planting trees and connecting with their neighbors under this year’s theme, “Plant It Forward: A tree planted today grows a stronger community tomorrow.”
“Trees are more than just a backdrop on our neighborhood walks,” said Nikki Henger, DNR forestry outreach specialist. “They build community and a sense of place, cool our cities, and clean the air. When we plant a tree, we’re investing in our neighborhoods and our future — we are planting it forward.”
Arbor Day is observed on the last Friday in April, but the celebration doesn’t stop there. Minnesota is one of just a handful of states that dedicates the entire month of May to celebrating trees and all they do to enhance our quality of life. May’s mild temperatures and rainfall also create ideal conditions for planting and helping young trees take root and thrive.
This Arbor Month, the DNR encourages Minnesotans to plant it forward. Join a community tree planting, host a planting day, add a tree to your yard, or care for a nearby tree by adding mulch or water. People also can check to see if their communities are part of the Tree City USA program. If so, there’s likely a nearby Arbor Month celebration to enjoy.
Here are a few tips to remember when planting a tree:
Choose the right tree and location.
Plant it right – Loosen roots, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and make sure the top of the root ball is level with the ground.
Visit the DNR website (mndnr.gov/arbormonth) for more planting tips. Also, follow the DNR on social media and post about planting it forward by using the hashtags #PlantItForward and #ArborMonth2025.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle baseball team lost 3-2 and 7-6 to the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader played in Duluth.
GAME ONE –
FIRST INNING Sawyer Satrom was the baserunner of the game, as he singled with one away. Even though UMC got a two-out walk to put two on, UMD starter Braylen Buttweiler got out of the inning, getting two groundouts and a strikeout to end the frame. After back-to-back foul outs to start the inning, the Bulldogs got a one-out walk before a popout ended the inning quickly.
SECOND INNING UMC got a one-out single from Kyler Miller, but Buttweiler once again avoided any more baserunners and kept the Golden Eagles scoreless. UMD got things underway quickly in the bottom of the 2nd inning with back-to-back singles to get two on with no one out. After a sacrifice bunt, Caden Klebba hit a sacrifice fly, putting the Bulldogs on the board with a 1-0 lead. Then, Nick Thompson and Sam Kliber got back-to-back RBI hits, putting the Bulldogs up 3-0 as the inning ended.
THIRD INNING UMC got a one-out walk from Sawyer Satrom, but nothing else, and went down quietly in the 3rd. UMD went down in order in the third inning.
FOURTH INNING UMC got a two-out single from Kyler Miller in the 4th, but the three other batters were retired to prevent any threat. Josh Dykhoff would strike out the side for UMC in the 4th inning.
FIFTH INNING After a quick out to start the 5th, UMC got a single from Debilzen, and a double from Satrom, and Dykhoff was walked intentionally to load the bases. However, no one could come through; Debilzen was thrown out on a force play and Kobe Senn grounded into another force play to end the inning with UMC still off the scoreboard. Dykhoff would strike out two more and get a groundout for another quick and easy inning.
SIXTH INNING UMC finally broke the scoreless drought. Kyler Miller singled, Aaron Wensloff walked, and then with runners on second and third with two outs, Debilzen singled in both runners, cutting the lead down to 3-2 as the game headed to the bottom of the 6th inning. For the third inning in a row, UMD was shut down in order by Josh Dykhoff.
SEVENTH INNING In the seventh, UMC got a double from Americo Sculati with one away. After that, KObe Senn hit one up the middle for a base hit, but Sculati was held at third base. This proved to be consequential, as the next two batters for UMC were retired, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 win.
