Red Lake County dominant in 22-6 win over Crookston Baseball

The Red Lake County Rebels scored five runs in the first inning and exploded for 17 runs in the third on their way to a 22-6 victory over the Crookston Pirates in the Jim Karn Classic played at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.

FIRST INNING-
Red Lake County started the game about as good as they could have hoped as Will Gieseke hit a line drive up the middle into centerfield for a leadoff single. Gunnar Halverson singled and Ben Gullingsrud walked. Gieseke scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Keggan Schmitz singled to right field and the Pirate fielder overran the ball and two runs scored as Schmitz advanced to third base on the play. Brock Seever walked and Brock Knott Knott singled to score two more runs for a 5-0 lead. Crookston’s Matt Contreras came in to pitch and Dawson Erickson reached on an error on a ground ball to third base, Colin Taggert reached on an error on the left fielder and bases were loaded with nobody out. Contreras finished the inning strong with a strikeout, an infield fly, and another strikeout to get out of the jam and Red Lake County led 5-0.
Crookston’s Contreras led off the bottom of the inning with a double and he advanced to third on a ground out. Gavyn Hlucny grounded out to second base and Contreras scored to bring the Pirates within a 5-1 deficit.

SECOND INNING-
Red Lake County’s first batter flew out before Schmitz was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Knott had a great at-bat while fouling several pitches off and drawing a walk. The next Rebel batter struck out and the half-inning was over.
Crookston’s Carter Fee led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Isaiah Donarski was hit by a pitch. The next batter struck out before Nolan Cassavant was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. The next batter flew out to centerfield and Red Lake County held on to their 5-1 lead.

THIRD INNING –
Red Lake County blew the game open with a 17-run and 10-hit third inning!! It started when a pitch hit Tagert to start the inning. Denny Lanctot walked and Gieseke singled to score a run. Halverson walked and Gullingsrud walked to score a run. Schmitz singled to score a run and Seeger singled to score two runs. Knott reached on a fielder’s choice and Dawson Erickson singled to score a run. Taggert stepped up to the plate for the second time in the inning and had an rbi single. Lanctot walked before Gieseke singled in a run. A run scored on an error and Halverson reached on a fielder’s choice before Gullingsrud knocked in a run. Bases were loaded when Schmitz and Seeger were hit by pitches to score two more runs. Red Lake County brought in Owen Chervestad to pinch and he laced a line drive to the right-center field gap for a bases-clearing double. After a strikeout, Bo Nelson reached on an error, Cain Cardinal singled and Gieseke singled to score another run for a 22-1 lead.
Crookston’s Parker Kelly started the bottom of the inning with a double and scored on a Hlucny double to get within a 22-2 deficit.

FOURTH INNING-
Red Lake County was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. Crookston’s first two batters struck out before Cassavant and Contreras walked. The next batter flew out and the inning was over.

FIFTH INNING-
Red Lake County was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. Crookston needed to score at least 11 runs to keep the game going and had a great start to the bottom of the inning. Hlucny singled and Greyson Ecker doubled to score a run. Carter Fee reached on an error on the third baseman and another run scored. Lucas Perala followed with a double to score another run. Aiden Delage recorded his first varsity basehit with an rbi single to bring Crookston within a 22-6 deficit. The next two batters were retired and the Rebels turned a double play on the last out to win the game 22-6.

Crookston drops to 2-5 on the year and will travel to Warroad on Tuesday to play a doubleheader. KROX will have the games on the radio. Red Lake County improves to 11-1 on the year and will host Roseau on Monday.
