The Crookston Pirate Softball could not keep up with the Northern Freeze in their final regular season game of the year, as they fell 15-5 in 5 innings in the Agassiz Playoffs played in Greenbush.
FIRST INNING-
Rilynn Aubol got the leadoff spot for this game and took the first pitch of the game to right center field for a leadoff double. Then, after a groundout, back-to-back wild pitches scored Aubol to put the Pirates up 1-0. Two strikeouts and a groundout would quickly end the inning after that.
The Freeze looked to respond, and after an out, a hit by pitch and an error put two on with one away. Then, a Pirate error scored the tying run, making it a 1-1 game. An RBI groundout after this made it 2-1, and a passed ball would make it 3-1 Freeze, which would stick as the inning concluded.
SECOND INNING-
Brylee Darco led off the top of the 2nd inning for the Pirates with a triple down the right field line, and after a strikeout, Brea Lessard drove in the run with a groundout to cut the lead to 3-2. Another groundout would end the inning.
The Freeze got a leadoff walk in the home half of the second inning. After an out, Ireland Klasen would reach second on a stolen base, then back-to-back passed balls allowed her to score, giving the Freeze a 4-2 lead. Two strikeouts by Emily Bowman would end the inning.
THIRD INNING –
Madi Bruggeman would reach on an three-base error with two outs in the 3rd inning, but she would be stranded there, as Kambelle Freije popped out to shortstop to end the inning.
The Freeze exploded on offense in the 3rd inning. A double and walk put runners on the corners, and an RBI groundout would then make it 5-2 Freeze. After a wild pitch made it 6-2, a hit by pitch would end Bowman’s day in the circle, and Ally Wagner would come in to replace her. She would walk the first two batters she faced to load the bases, and back-to-back errors would score 3 runs, making it 9-2 Freeze. The Freeze would get their 6th and final run of the inning on yet another RBI groundout, and a popout would end the inning at 10-2 Freeze.
FOURTH INNING-
Peyton Demerais would walk to lead off the 4th, but her courtesy runner would be called out for leaving early trying to steal. The next two Crookston batters would be retired in order.
A single and a walk with one away put the Freeze back in business. Then, a two-base error scored both runners, giving the Freeze a 12-2 lead. With two outs, another Pirate error scored the third and final run of the inning, making it 13-2 Freeze through 4 innings.
FIFTH INNING-
Crookston needed at least 2 runs to stay alive, with Brynna Kopecky on first and two outs, Bowman tripled down the third base line to make it 13-3, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 13-4. Bruggeman would then reach on an error and score on a passed ball to make it 13-5, before a groundout ended the inning.
Ally Wagner got two strikeouts to start the home half of the 5th inning, but then the wheels came off. Three straight walks loaded the bases, a passed ball scored the first one to make it 14-5, and then one last Pirate error put it away, and the Freeze would win 15-5 in 5 innings.
Crookston drops to 6-14 on the season.
