Three killed, 5 wounded in shooting at Glendale, Arizona restaurant

City of Glendale Police car Glendale Arizona 4/1/18

Three people were killed and several others injured after a shooting at a restaurant in Glendale, Arizona. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 at El Camarón Gigante Mariscos & Steakhouse in Glendale. Citing information from the Glendale Police Department, ABC News stated that at least nine people were hurt during the incident.

More than one shooter may have been involved in the attack; but as of press time, no suspects have been taken into custody. An eyewitness who spoke to Phoenix-based NBC affiliate KPNX said the restaurant had been hosting a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the time of the shooting. The event was described as family-oriented, with attendees of all ages present when the gunfire erupted. The witness said he had just exited the venue when he heard more than 20 gunshots fired in rapid succession, followed by another volley of roughly 10 shots after a brief pause. His vehicle was struck by stray bullets during the incident.

Officer Moroni Mendez, speaking to Fox 10, said that “we can confirm that several people were shot. The number of victims is approaching nine. I can’t verify that exact figure, but it’s definitely more than three at this time.” Despite reports of multiple assailants, Officer Mendez emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the community: “at this point, no arrests have been made. We do have a number of individuals detained, and we’re working to determine whether they’re suspects, victims, witnesses, or possibly connected in another way.” Mendez also noted that a conflict between “two rival groups” is one potential angle being explored: “we’re trying to piece together whether these individuals were acquaintances, relatives, allies, or adversaries.”

The Consulate of Mexico in Phoenix posted to social media early Monday that “Derived from the events that happened tonight in ‘El Camarón Gigante,’ in the city of Glendale,” any Mexican people who require “consular assistance or protection” in connection to the incident can contact their office.

At least three dead, several missing after migrant boat capsizes near San Diego

Authorities have confirmed that at least three people have died and multiple others are missing after a boat carrying suspected migrants overturned off the coast near San Diego on Monday. Rescue operations are ongoing, with the U.S. Coast Guard, lifeguards, and sheriff’s deputies assisting in the search for other possible victims. Officials believe the vessel was part of a human smuggling attempt, though the exact number of passengers remains uncertain.

Per Fox News, the circumstances leading up to the incident are unclear. Coast Guard officials said they did not know where the 12-foot boat was coming from before it flipped. Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris Sappey said in a statement that “this appears to be a migrant smuggling operation — strictly human smuggling, no narcotics involved — coming from south of the border,” and also noted that at least two children were among those aboard the vessel.   In an official statement, the U.S. Coast Guard reported that nine individuals remain unaccounted for following the capsizing of the boat near Del Mar.

One person who had been on the overturned panga — a small, open boat with an outboard motor — told rescuers there were 18 people aboard. However, it is still unclear how many remain unaccounted for, or whether any individuals managed to swim safely to shore at Torrey Pines State Beach.

Encinitas Deputy Fire Chief Jorge Sanchez said that in addition to the three confirmed fatalities, four individuals were taken to nearby hospitals via ambulance for treatment: “we’re continuing a thorough search to ensure no one else is still out there in the water. At this time, we don’t have further updates on those missing or found.”

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is also involved in the response, assisting with the incident near the 200 block of Stratford Court.  They said its deputies are assisting the Coast Guard “with providing life-saving measures related to a maritime event on the beach near the 200 block of Stratford Court.”

Crookston Ways and Means holds planning session for City Administrator

cityofcrookstonlogo204682

Crookston Ways and Means met Monday night following the City Council meeting in the council chambers. The agenda for Monday’s Ways and Means was a planning session for the City Administrator for the upcoming year.

Mayor Stainbrook opened up the meeting, asking the council members to discuss what items they would like to see City Administrator Shoobridge take on in the next year.  There was some good discussion, and Shoobridge explained that the council did have things they would like to see him do. “We have getting our comp plan completed, quarterly budget meetings, looking at a focus in child care, places for families, and an understanding of amenities that the residents use or would like,” says Shoobridge. “We talked about parks, their equipment, possibly reducing some mowing requirements with some wildflower gardens and areas that we can discontinue or charge with our mowing because our parks department does over 400 acres of mowing every week in the summer months.”

The Ways and Means Committee discussed how they are going to approach next year’s budget season with regard to the city’s cash reserve balance or lack thereof. Shoobridge made it very clear that putting money into the reserve is a top priority that needs to be taken very seriously. Council members also asked that Shoobridge be more descriptive on budget line items and that he provide the council with financials so that they know when the city is nearing budget or over budget on any budget items.

City Council declares at-large vacancy and opens up applications until noon on May 15

cityofcrookstonlogo-1342129

The Crookston City Council met Monday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall in the Council Chambers. During Presentations and Public Information Announcements, Mayor Stainbrook made a proclamation declaring May 2025 Mental Health Awareness Month. Cindy Strom, RN, and Program Director at Riverview Health, Senior Life Solutions, was in attendance tonight to hear the proclamation and receive a signed copy. “I came down for the Mayor to sign our proclamation to make May Crookston Mental Health Awareness Month,” says Strom. “Mental health covers a wide gamut of people. It can be adolescents, middle-aged, or older people. I am currently working with the geriatric population, 65 and older, but I really just want to raise awareness of mental health and stamp out the stigma.”

Approved within the Consent Agenda for Monday were the City Council Minutes from April 21, 2025, and the City of Crookston Bills and Disbursements of $218,987.44. The consent agenda also approved the license renewals for 2025 Cement Masons Craig Plante Construction and JD Concrete LLC, accepted a donation for the Crookston Sports Center in the amount of $15,354.46 for the Crookston Parks and Recreation Sports Center for the flooring for the walking path from Crookston Area Community Fund, a donation from Bruce Erdmann in the amount of  $20 for Kids First Program in Memory of Issac Perala, and a donation from Fin and Fit in the amount of $10,000 for the Crookston Community Pool. The last two items on the consent agenda were a resolution calling for a public hearing on “Regulations of Cannabis Businesses” in the City of Crookston and a resolution declaring the Crookston Watch as the official paper for the City of Crookston.

With the late addition of one item to the agenda for Monday night, there were three items the council needed to attend to. The first was a resolution regarding the approval of the non-commercial hangar lot lease template for Crookston Municipal Airport. City Administrator Jeff Shoobridge explained to the council that the updated template will allow a private entity to build a hangar at the Crookston Airport. “We have a private entity that is looking at building a hangar there, they will own the hangar and we are going to give them a 20-year lease,” says Shoobridge. “What the council approved is just a template for the future, so if we have other entities that also want to build a private hangar, we already have a process and a template in place.” Shoobridge explained that the private owner will build the building, they will have a 20 year lease and at the end of the 20 years they will have the option to renew, transition the hanger to the city or demolish the building if it is not in good repair, which will be at the city’s discretion. The council unanimously approved of the lease template.

The second item was a resolution declaring a vacancy for the City Council Member Tim Menard, who had held one of the two at-large positions but recently resigned for health reasons. “We do have a vacancy on the city council for those who are not aware. It is an at-large seat, so that means anyone who is a registered voter in the city is eligible to put in for that,” says Shoobridge. “It is open from now until noon on the 15th of May, that’s a Thursday, about a week and a half away.” City staff will assemble and provide to the council all the applicants, and the council is anticipated to hold interviews for the position from all of the applicants at the meeting on the 19th of May, Shoobridge says. “Mark your calendars, and we will fill that spot that evening, and then at the following meeting, we’ll be able to swear them in and move forward with the full council again.” The council unanimously approved declaring the vacancy on the City Council.

The third item, which was added to Monday night’s agenda, was a resolution regarding approving the payment of property taxes and assessments to Polk County on City-owned properties. It was explained to the council that in preparing last year’s budget, there were many line items in previous budgets that really were not filled in. When the city received this year’s tax statement, the city identified several properties that were not properly budgeted for. “We just wanted to clear it up. While we do have enough in the budget to cover this payment, for the first installment, the second half, we don’t have quite enough budgeted to cover that amount,” says Shoobridge. “We wanted to get the council’s permission to spend that money outside of the budget. It’s a housekeeping item as we move forward with the new budget.” Shoobridge says that because of when he came on board last year, and with the rush to get the budget together, the council knew there would be some holes or areas where the council would have to make some amendments. The total amount owed to Polk County for 2025 is $90,845.40. The city budgeted $52,410 for payments for 2025. The council unanimously approved payment outside of the 2025 budget in the amount of $38,435.40 to cover the difference.
