In early April, KROX sat down with Community Development Director Karie Kirschbaum, Professor of Marketing at the University of Minnesota Crookston, Al Fattel Anas, and Associate Professor Eric Castle, to chat about a project they collaborated on to highlight the trail system in Crookston.
On Wednesday, April 30, the Professors and their respective classes presented to the public on their completed semester-long project at Valley Technology Park. The project, “Crookston On The Move: Connecting the Community Through Trails,” covered topics such as increasing trail usage, recommendations for future expansion, and identifying where trails are and their current conditions.
The students used a survey to gather information from the community on what they would like to see happen with our trails, how they can be improved, what residents like about the trails, and more. The students were very thankful for the community involvement, as it greatly benefited their project.
The project presentation was very professional, and the students took the work they did very seriously, as many of them use the trails in Crookston daily. City of Crookston Marketing Coordinator Keenan Devier thanked the students for their hard work and dedication and said that he would bring what they did to the city staff and council to use as a resource for future planning.
One person is dead and 14 others injured when a house party in southeast Houston turned deadly early Sunday morning after gunfire erupted.
According to CBS Houston affiliate KHOU, Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu said that emergency calls began flooding in around 12:50 a.m., reporting gunshots at a residence in the area. Officers responding to the scene said they could still hear gunfire as they arrived. When they reached the location, police discovered several people with gunshot wounds outside the house.
Cantu stated that the incident started during a family gathering, when an individual who was not invited had been told to leave- and that person allegedly responded by opening fire. Others at the party reportedly drew their own weapons and returned fire. Cantu said there were multiple scenes officers were investigating, and many of those who were injured were scattered at various spots around the home where the party was happening.
Members of the Houston Fire Department provided medical aid to victims in the parking lot of a nearby restaurant. One fatality was confirmed, and several of the injured were listed in critical condition and undergoing surgery. Some individuals took themselves to hospitals for treatment, Cantu noted.
Houston Police Department spokesperson Jody Silva said that, nearly 12 hours after the shooting, no arrests had been made. Police detained multiple people but were not immediately certain if they had the shooting suspect in custody as the investigation continued Sunday morning, according to Cantu.
Two people have been arrested in connection with an alleged bomb attack plot at a free Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The arrests were part of Operation Fake Monsters, a joint investigation led by the Brazilian Justice Ministry, Federal Police, and digital intelligence services. The operation aimed to preempt any threat ahead of the singer’s historic performance on Saturday night.
Police in Brazil said on Sunday that the suspects — one adult male detained in Rio Grande do Sul and a teenager arrested in Rio de Janeiro — were allegedly planning to use improvised explosives, including Molotov cocktails, to target the event. No explosives were found during the operation. Authorities stated the two suspects were part of an online group that promotes hate speech and attempts to recruit other teenagers while encouraging acts of violence. One of the suspects was also found in possession of child pornography, according to authorities.
Despite the threat, the concert proceeded without incident. On Sunday, a spokesperson for Lady Gaga said the pop star and her team “learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning. Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks. Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”
Lady Gaga posted about the show Sunday on Instagram, but did not address the alleged bombing threat: “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you. An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history. I wish I could share this feeling with the whole world—I know I can’t, but I can say this—if you lose your way, you can find your way back if you believe in yourself and work hard. You can give yourself dignity by rehearsing your passion and your craft, pushing yourself to new heights— you can lift yourself up even if it takes some time. Thank you Rio for waiting for me to come back. Thank you little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster.”
The Rio event on Saturday was the biggest show of the pop star’s career that attracted more than 2 million fans to Copacabana Beach.
