Exceptional care close to home – that’s one way to describe the services offered by RiverView Health’s Infusion Services Department.
“At our critical access hospital, every infusion is guided by clinical expertise and delivered with the kind of personalized care only a close-knit team can provide,’’ shared Jami Revier, director of Surgical Services and Outpatient Infusions and Procedures. “We may be small in size, but we are mighty in heart, skill, and dedication—delivering exceptional care, one infusion at a time.”
Infusion therapy is a method for delivering prescribed medications, fluids, or nutrients directly into the bloodstream through a needle or catheter. Because infusion therapy bypasses the digestive system, medications are absorbed more quickly and potentially more effectively than when taken orally.
Advantages of infusion therapy include faster onset of recovery as higher doses of medication are allowed, potentially fewer side effects, and greater flexibility in treatment options.
Many conditions are treated through infusion therapy, including cancer, infections, autoimmune disorders, and nutritional deficiencies. Some of the high-quality, convenient treatment options RiverView offers include
- Antibiotic infusions for treating various bacterial infections.
- Blood transfusions to replace blood lost due to surgery, injury, or certain medical conditions, or when the body isn’t producing enough blood.
- Infliximab (Remicade) infusions to treat several autoimmune diseases, primarily Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Intravenous (IV) fluids applied directly into a vein to restore or maintain hydration and electrolyte balance, or to deliver medications, nutrition, or blood products.
- Intramuscular injections delivering medication deep into the muscle tissue, allowing for faster absorption into the bloodstream.
- Subcutaneous injections administering medication beneath the skin, into the fatty tissue layer, allowing for slow absorption into the body.
- Iron infusions discharged directly into the bloodstream via an IV line, typically used to treat iron deficiency anemia.
Infusion therapy is available in RiverView’s outpatient procedure area weekdays from 8 am to 4:15 pm. Weekend or after-hours infusions are administered in the Emergency Department or inpatient setting.
