The Crookston School Board met on Monday afternoon in the Crookston High School Choir/Orchestra room.
POST SECONDARY EDUCATION OPTION CONTRACT WITH UMC
The board approved the Post Secondary Education Option contract with the University of Minnesota Crookston for the upcoming school year. Students enrolling in PSEO must have a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and a UMC GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Tuition will be billed to the Crookston School District at the rate of $248.37 per credit, which includes books, supplies, and all other established course charges. “It’s the standard rate set by the state, and that’s something that students can take advantage of, so they have college credits or university credits to move on to further their education, and the school district pays for that,” said Superintendent Randy Bruer. “So you could probably go into a university, and you’re a sophomore or a junior if you’re staying on task with all of your credits. It’s a good program that started many years ago.“
The board approved salary lane advancement requests for Lon Boike, Elizabeth Erickson, Brandon Lee, Erin Marsyla, Brandon Neibauer-Adams, Megan Parenteau, Monica Parenteau, Stacy Olson, Tanya Reitmeier, Dixie Sele, Sandra Sorenson, and Renee Tangquist, effective September 1, 2025.
PERSONNEL ITEMS APPROVED
The board approved several personnel items, including Kent Erickson’s resignation as custodian at the high school, Madilynn Thomsen and Kathy Anderson’s resignations as paraprofessionals, and Ben Parkin’s resignation as head baseball coach.
The board approved Karen Reierson’s status change from Kitchen Helper to Kitchen Helper/Clerk at Highland School and Marianne Isaacs as a paraprofessional. Another approved item was Joseph Gullekson’s employment as an elementary teacher at Highland School. The addition was needed due to an increase in enrollment at Highland School. “We added another teacher because on our registration day, we added another 23 students that I know of to this date,” said Superintendent Bruer. “So that’s encouraging. I hope we can see a few more walk in the door. That’s always a positive sign for a school district.”
CYBERSECURITY GRANT APPLICATION-
Superintendent Bruer said he applied for a Minnesota Department of Education Cybersecurity Act grant that could bring up to $60,000 to the district. “This school district invested about $40,000 in one area, and we put some vaping sensors and cameras in our restrooms. We have also paid for cybersecurity insurance. All those things apply to what this grant is, so we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out, but the total that we can get back from this is between $50,000 and $60,000,” said Bruer. “Obviously, that would be a nice bunch of money to have. You bet. That could be the price of a new teacher.“
