The East Grand Forks American Legion Baseball team had a solid showing at the State Division 1 State Tournament last weekend in St. Michael. In the first round, they beat St. Michael 8-6. In the second round, they beat Hopkins behind a Parker Erickson pitching gem, 1-0 in nine innings. In the third round, EGF beat Osseo 6-0 to advance to the semi-finals. The semi-final game was a dandy, but Grand Rapids beat EGF 8-6. In the championship game, Shakopee beat Grand Rapids 13-9. Shakopee and Grand Rapids advance to the Central Region Finals in Fargo.
Just to prove rankings mean nothing – EGF and Grand Rapids were NOT ranked in the top 20 in the final poll of the season.
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton American Legion Baseball competed in the Division II state tournament. DGF lost to Luverne 9-6 in the first round. In the consolation semi-finals, DGF lost to Esko 15-4 in five innings, and they ended the tournament with a 6-4 victory over La Crescent to finish 7th place. Bob Motzko is cookin (as the kids say). What a week it has been.
oorhead is a D-1 Hockey producing machine. The latest was Spud Boys Hockey player Wyatt Cullen announcing he will play for THE University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Men’s Hockey team. He will join Lakeville North center Gunnar Conboy and former Grand Rapids goalie Carter Casey.
Cullen (only 16 years old) has some pretty good genes. His dad, Matt Cullen was a former Spud and St. Cloud State hockey player and played 21 years in the NHL. His grandpa is a former Spud Boys Hockey coach. Cullen is a shrimp only 5’8 and 146 pounds, but can play as he was on the U.S. National Team Development Program’s Under 17 squad and had 9 goals and 39 assists in 88 games. He couldn’t play in Moorhead anymore because in 2023-24, he scored 68 goals and 98 assists in 60 games for the Moorhead Bantam AA team!!!!!!!
A few days later, Brooks Cullen followed and decommitted from Michigan State and chose the Gophers. Brooks had 48 points last year while leading the Spuds to a State Class AA Championship. The good news for Gopher fans is that there is another Cullen in the pipeline, too. Joey Cullen is a consensus Top 10 American-born forward! The latest signing comes from Luca Jarvis of Stillwater. He had 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points in 30 games while leading Stillwater to the Class AA championship game last season. He will play in the USHL for Youngstown this upcoming season.
The question is…..Why put W. Cullen if only one Cullen will play for the Gophers? We will see if the Gophers can steal one from Sparty.

Moorhead Spud Girls Hockey player Olivia Kortan has committed to play hockey for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. Kortan was named the 2024-25 Class AA Herb Brooks Award winner and led the Spuds with 47 (22 goals and 25 assists) points this past season. The Spuds defenseman Anika Stromme committed to Minnesota State Mankato and goalie Taylor Kressin signed with Ohio State. A pretty impressive crew for the Spuds.

The Polk County Commissioners met on Tuesday at the Polk County Government Center.
REZONE REQUEST FOR THE FORMER PIONEER MEMORIAL CARE Jay Coughenour asked the commissioners to rezone approximately 5.69 acre parcel of land from the Agricultural Zoning District. Coughenour is looking at turning the old 50,000 square foot Pioneer Memorial Care assisted living facility into a substance addiction and behavioral residential treatment facility, which will be called the Center For Hope. Coughenour said Polk, Norman, and Mahnomen Counties have identified mental health and addiction services as their greatest unmet need in recent community assessments. 57 percent of Beltrami County arrests involve substance abuse. Minnesota faces a statewide shortage of 3,500 treatment beds, leaving many without access to care, and no residential treatment facility exists within 100 miles of the northern border, creating a critical gap in services.
Coughenour expects the Center For Hope to create 50-plus new jobs.
“A detailed operational plan of the business must be submitted to the Planning and Zoning Department for the proposed treatment facility to be rezoned,” said Polk County Planning and Zoning’s Jacob Snyder (Assistant Environmental Services Director). “The business must conduct background checks for admissions so as not to admit violent or sex offenders into the facility to protect the well-being of the students attending the Win-E-Mac school district, which is located 1,200 feet north of the proposed treatment facility.” The commissioners unanimously approved the rezoning request.

MAPLE LAKE PAVILLION TO HOST THE FABULOUS ARMIDILLOS RiverBottom LLC, the owners of the Maple Lake Pavilion, requested a large gathering permit on August 31 for when it hosts the Famous Armadillos on Labor Day weekend. They expect over 1,000 people to attend, so a large gathering permit is required from Polk County. “We do the permit to make sure there are acceptable sanitary, police, fire, and other health and safety considerations have been met by the applicant,” said Snyder. The Irishman’s Shanty will serve alcohol, and there will be additional food trucks.
The commissioners unanimously approved the permit.
PICTOMETRY PAYMENT REQUEST Polk County uses EagleView for the flyover for Pictometry software and licensing, and the cost for the next three years is $90,400. 70 percent comes from the buffer funding, which is to help enforce buffers in the county, 15 percent ($13,560) comes from the Highway Department budget, and Property Records will pay for 15 percent of the cost ($13,560). The money will come from the Recorder’s Compliance Funds, as various departments of the Taxpayer Service Center use the imagery. “
The commissioners unanimously approved the payment.

During National Wellness Month, the American Red Cross encourages people to prioritize their personal health and well-being while helping to save lives with a blood donation. Donors of all blood types – especially those with type O positive or B negative blood – are asked to make an appointment now to prevent a further drop in donor turnout.
In August, the Red Cross will provide free A1C screening – a test commonly used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes – for all donors who make a successful blood, platelet or plasma donation. Fasting is not required for this test, and donors will be able to view their confidential results one to two weeks after their donation in the Blood Donor App or their donor account at RedCrossBlood.org. Donors will receive one A1C test result in a 12-month period.
August also brings changes in routines. Back-to-school plans, the start of fall sports and final summer vacations may be top of mind right now, but patients can’t wait. Making and keeping donation appointments can be the difference in a patient’s treatment journey.
Help save lives and empower your health! Schedule a time to give now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Those who come to give Aug. 1-28, 2025, will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of choice. For details on both offers, visit RedCrossBlood.org/Test.
How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
Amplify your impact − volunteer!
Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross is to become a volunteer blood donor ambassador at Red Cross blood drives. Blood donor ambassadors help greet, check in and thank blood donors to ensure they have a positive donation experience.
Volunteers can also serve as transportation specialists, playing a vital role in ensuring lifesaving blood products are delivered to nearby hospitals. For more information and to apply for either position, visit RedCross.org/GiveTime.
