The UMC Women’s Soccer team hung with the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets for most of the game, but were unable to stop their offensive output and lost by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
FIRST HALF
Both teams played a defensive stalemate in the first 10 minutes of the first half, where only BHS got a shot on goal, which was saved easily by Phoenix DeBrusk (Fr., Thunder Bay). Then, in the 13th minute, the Yellow Jackets had a breakaway opportunity, but DeBrusk sprawled out to make an amazing save. From there, BHS stormed ahead on offense, outshooting UMC 9-2. UMC did not get a shot on goal in the half, but held the Yellow Jackets to no more shots on goal until the 45th minute, where Audrey Sillanpaa, a first half substitute for the Yellow Jackets, beat DeBrusk to put BHS up 1-0 in the final minute of the first half, which is a score that would stand at the half.
SECOND HALF
The second half contained a lot more offense for both teams. UMC got a golden opportunity with a penalty kick in the 50th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Seven minutes later, in the 57th minute, BHS had a penalty kick opportunity as well, but that one also missed. Both teams started taking more shots on goal, including the first three for UMC. However, the Yellow Jackets would be the ones to find paydirt first, as Peyton Hill scored in the 60th minute to make it 2-0 Yellow Jackets. UMC needed an answer, and they got one from Julia Finch, who scored in the 64th minute to cut the lead down to 2-1 with the first goal of UMC’s regular season. Two minutes later, the Yellow Jackets missed another penalty kick, giving the Golden Eagles even more life. However, they only got one more shot on goal in the entire game, and BHS scored two more times in the final 10 minutes to pull away fro a 4-1 victory.
UMC drops to 0-1-1 on the season, whereas BHS improves to 1-0-1.
