The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team won two singles and one doubles match on Tuesday afternoon, but lost 4-3 to the Bemidji Lumberjacks in Bemidji.
The match was a competitive one with most of the matches being tight battles, including second and third doubles going three sets with each team winning one of the three set matches.
Crookston’s wins came at first singles with Ashlyn Bailey beating Bemidji’s Liz Peterson in the first set 6-4 and cruised to a 6-1 second set victory. The second victory came at fourth singles with Lauren Tull shutting out her opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. The third Pirate victory was at second doubles with Madelyn Anderson and Logan Brekken winning a thrilling three set match with the Pirates winning the first set 6-3. They lost the second set 6-3 to force a third set. The third set was a dandy and the Pirates outlasted the Jacks to win 10-7.
Some other highlights – Bemidji’s Bailey Rupp, daughter of Crookston High School grad Stephanie (Boll) Rupp played at second singles and beat Emma LaPlante. Unfortunately, Rupp’s cousins Chloe and Grace Boll didn’t get an opportunity to play against each other. Crookston had a three set loss at third doubles. Lucy Smith and Grace Boll won the first set 7-5 before losing the second set 6-2. In the third set, the Lumberjacks won 10-5.
Crookston drops to 6-6 on the year and has three big matches at the Thief River Falls Quad on Thursday as they take on Staples-Motley, Wadena-Deer Creek, and Thief River Falls.
