Safety personnel from local businesses visit the Crookston High School Woods/Welding classes to talk about safety in the workplace as supplemental training to the safety lessons that teacher Travis Oliver provides on the different tools, machines, and materials they use in the classes.
“The goal was to bring some real life into the classroom setting, and so I reached out to a few local businesses and was lucky enough to line up guest speakers for class,” said Mr. Oliver.
Becky Kofoed, the Director of HR and Safety from Sunrich Products, a sunflower producer in Crookston, and Charles Edwards, the Safety Coordinator from DEE Manufacturing, an aluminum foundry and machine shop in Crookston. “Kofoed and Edwards took time away from their companies to visit with my students about safety practices that they have in place at the businesses they work for. Becky visited my Intro classes in Woods and Welding (3 classes), and Charles visited my 2nd year classes in Woods and Welding (2 classes),” said Mr. Oliver. “Becky spoke about what safety looks like at Sunrich, employee safety training, workplace hazards and preventive measures, required PPE, overview of accidents, and what the process looks like if someone gets hurt on the job. Charles spoke about the hazards that exist at DEE, the common injuries, types of training employees receive, and the required PPE.”
