UMC Volleyball falls to #17 Wayne State in NSIC opener

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team opened up Northern Sun Conference (NSIC) play on Friday night and struggled against the #17 ranked Wayne State (Nebraska) 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-9) at Gary Senske court at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston. 

SET ONE –
The match was back and forth at the start with ties at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 before UMC’s Carizma Muth had a kill for a 6-5 lead. Wayne State responded with an 11-4 run to take a 16-10 lead. UMC’s Muth had another kill to bring the Golden Eagles within a 16-11 deficit before Wayne State ended the set on a 9-2 run to win the set 25-13. 

SET TWO-
The second set was back and forth early on with Wayne State scoring the first two points before UMC’s Muth Adrienne Venditto had kills for a 2-2 score. Wayne State answered with two points before UMC’s Lexi Scharold and Emma Malek had kills for a 4-4 tie. There were ties at 5, 6, and 7 before Wayne State pulled away and outscored the Golden Eagles 18-6 to win 25-13.

SET THREE-
Wayne State put any thoughts of a UMC comeback out of the question with a 6-0 run to start the third set. The run ended with two Wayne State attack errors. Wayne State bounced back with two points before UMC’s Muth and Madison Carsten had kills to get within an 8-4 deficit. Wayne State had an 11-6 lead when they finished the match on a 14-3 run for a 25-9 victory to sweep the match for a 3-0 victory. 

UMC drops to 6-3 on the year and 0-1 in NSIC play and will host Augustana on Saturday. Wayne State improves to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC.
