The Augustana Vikings swept the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team in a Northern Sun Conference match played at Gary Senske Court in Lysaker Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
SET ONE –
The teams exchanged points to start the match with ties at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 before UMC took a 7-5 lead after two Viking attack errors. Augustana came back to tie the set at 8-8 before UMC’s Madison Carsten (Jr. Wadena-Deer Creek HS) and Lexi Scharold kills for a 10-8 lead. Augustana responded with a 5-1 run for a 13-11 lead. UMC tied the set at 15-15 on a Carsten kill before Augustana went on an 8-1 run for a 23-16 lead. After UMC scored two points, the Vikings answered with two kills to win the set 25-18.
SET TWO-
UMC jumped out to a 3-1 lead with an Augustana attack error, a Carsten kill, and an ace. The Vikings responded by taking a 6-5 lead. After each team recorded a point, and then UMC’s Carsten had another kill, the Golden Eagles regained the lead with a Viking attack error for an 8-7 lead. Augustana went on a 6-2 run to take a 13-10 lead. Augustana had a service error before scoring five straight points for an 18-11 lead. UMC tried to battle back and got within a 23-19 deficit before an attack error and a Viking kill for a 25-19 Augustana victory for a 2-0 lead.
SET THREE-
UMC started the third set well, scoring the first six points, sparked by three Carsten kills. After a Viking attack error, Emma Malek had a kill, followed by another attack error for a 6-0 Golden Eagle lead. Augustana answered with a 5-1 run. The Vikings battled back to tie the set at 9-9. UMC’s Carsten had a kill before Augustana took over the rest of the way and ended the match on a 16-5 run to win the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
UMC drops to 6-4, 0-2 in NSIC play and will travel to Minnesota State Moorhead on Tuesday. Augustana improves to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC.
