The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team battled for three sets, but ran out of gas in the fourth set in a 3-1 loss (25-19, 25-18, 24-26, 25-13) to the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons in a Northern Sun Conference match played at Nemzek Hall in Moorhead.
SET ONE –
UMC jumped out to a 3-1 lead after a Madison Carsten (Jr. Wadena-Deer Creek H.S). Crookston had a 5-2 lead after a pair of Dragon attack errors. Moorhead countered with an 8-1 run fueled by five kills for a 10-6 lead. The teams played even the rest of the set, and with the Dragons leading 21-18, they scored three straight points with two kills and a UMC error. After a UMC kill from Emma Malek, Moorhead’s Brielle Riess blasted a kill for a 25-19 victory for a 1-0 lead. Riess had five kills in the set.
SET TWO-
Moorhead jumped out to a 3-1 lead to start the set. UMC battled back and trailing 5-2, they went on a 5-0 run with kills from Muth and Carsten and the Golden Eagles led 7-5. The lead didn’t last long as Moorhead answered with a six-point run for an 11-7 lead. UMC chipped away at the deficit and got within a 17-15 deficit before Moorhead went on a 6-0 run for a 23-15 lead. UMC was gifted two points on Moorhead attack errors, and after the teams exchanged points, the Dragons won the set 25-18 to take a 2-0 lead.
SET THREE-
The set was tied at 1 and 2 before UMC scored two points with a Carsten kill and a Moorhead error for a 4-2 lead. UMC continued to build on the lead, and after kills from Carsten and Carizma Muth and a Moorhead error, the Golden Eagles led 7-3. Moorhead countered with a 7-1 run with four kills for a 10-8 lead. There were ties at 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, and 24 before UMC’s Lex Scharold and Carsten had kills to win the set 26-24 to get within a 2-1 deficit.
SET FOUR-
Moorhead took any thoughts of a UMC comeback away with an 8-1 run to start the set. The Dragons cruised the rest of the way for a 25-13 victory to win the match 3-1.
UMC drops to 6-5, 0-3 in NSIC play and will. MSU-Moorhead improves to 8-3 on the year and 2-1 in the NSIC.
