Soccer and Girls Tennis playoffs start next week. Section 8A Soccer starts Tuesday and Section 8A Girls Tennis starts in Fargo on Thursday. We are already at the end of a few seasons. Crazy. It goes by so fast. I just wish the winter season could go as quick.

In the file of “I thought I would never have to report something like this.” The Minnesota High School League and Minnesota Department of Education were in violation of Title IX for allowing males to compete in female sports and occupy female intimate facilities (locker rooms). The press release from the U.S. Department of Education is below.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED)’s Office for Civil Rights (ED’s OCR) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)’s Office for Civil Rights (HHS’ OCR) announced that the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) are both in violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX). The Noncompliance Finding (or Notice of Violation, “joint finding”) concluded that MDE and MSHSL violated Title IX’s prohibition on sex discrimination by allowing males to compete in female sports and occupy female intimate facilities.

The joint finding determined that, over the course of several years, MDE and MSHSL allowed male athletes to compete on the girls’ Alpine ski team, the girls’ Nordic skiing team, the girls’ lacrosse team, the girls’ track and field team, the girls’ volleyball team, and the girls’ fastpitch softball team.

ED’s OCR initiated its initial investigation after MSHSL publicly declared its intention to violate federal antidiscrimination law and President Trump’s February 2025 Executive Order “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.” In June 2025, ED elevated its existing investigations and HHS initiated a compliance review of MDE and MSHSL after a widely reported incident showed a male athlete from Champlin Park High School dominating a girls’ MSHSL softball match, leading Champlin to a state championship. The male pitcher overpowered female athletes during five consecutive matches, only giving up one earned run over the course of 35 innings and striking out 27 female batters.

“For too many years, Minnesota’s political leadership has found itself on the wrong side of justice, common sense, and the American people. Now the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota State High School League find themselves on the wrong side of Title IX by allowing males to compete in women’s sports,” said ED’s Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor. “The Trump Administration will not allow Minnesota or any other state to sacrifice the safety, fair treatment, and dignity of its female students to appease the false idols of radical gender ideology. Once an education program or entity takes federal funds, Title IX compliance becomes mandatory. And the federal government will hold Minnesota accountable until it recognizes that fact.”

“Minnesota permits male athletes to compete in sports designated for females, which denies females the equal opportunities under Title IX that they deserve in athletic competition,” said HHS’ OCR Director Paula M. Stannard. “Minnesota fails to recognize the fundamental biological differences between males and females—differences that justify single-sex teams and are essential to ensuring fair and safe competition for girls and women.”

ED and HHS have issued a proposed Resolution Agreement to MDE and MSHSL to voluntarily resolve their Title IX violations within 10 days or risk imminent enforcement action. The Resolution Agreement requires the following action items:

  • MDE and MSHSL must rescind or revise any guidance permitting males to compete in girls’ sports to comply with Title IX and to reflect that to the extent State law conflicts with Title IX, federal law preempts State law;
  • MDE will issue a statewide notice to all federally funded entities operating interscholastic athletic programs mandating their strict compliance with Title IX by separating athletics and intimate facilities based on sex;
  • The notice will require these entities to adopt biology-based definitions of “male” and “female” and remind them that non-compliance with Title IX places their federal funding in jeopardy;
  • MDE and MSHSL will submit updated Title IX training, procedure, and process materials for ED’s OCR and HHS’ OCR to review and approve, and will conduct the approved training to MDE and MSHSL personnel;
  • MDE will restore to female athletes all records and titles misappropriated by male athletes competing in female categories, and send each female a letter of apology on behalf of the State of Minnesota for allowing her educational experience to be marred by sex discrimination. MDE will demand in writing that MSHSL take parallel action; and
  • MDE will require each school and MSHSL to submit to MDE an annual certification that they have complied with Title IX.

Background

In June 2025, ED’s OCR elevated its Title IX investigations into MDE and MSHSL to the Title IX Special Investigations Team, a joint investigatory partnership with DOJ. The same month, HHS’ OCR initiated a compliance review based on the participation of the male athlete in a MSHSL high school girls’ softball championship. ED and HHS found that this male athlete has competed on the Champlin girls’ varsity fastpitch softball team since 2023 and each season led the program to a winning record against competing all-girls softball teams.

In addition to allowing male athletes to compete on several girls’ sports teams, MDE and MSHSL have several policies and guidance documents that incorrectly and unlawfully describe Title IX’s enforcement obligations. MDE’s 2017 “Toolkit for Ensuring Safe and Supportive Schools for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students” wrongly holds that “Title IX requires schools provide transgender students with the right to participate in…athletics in a manner consistent with their gender identity.” It further stipulates that “transgender and gender nonconforming students should be afforded the opportunity to use the restroom of their choice.” Additionally, MSHSL guidelines state that it “allows participation for all students consistent with their gender identity.”

Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance.

THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN
Thumbs up to Napheesa Collier for her exit interview after the Lynx season ended. The WNBA is unwatchable half the time because the officiating is terrible and the game is so physical. She spoke up respectfully and acted like the amazing player and person she is.

Thumbs down to Cheryl Reeves (Lynx coach). I have never been a fan because she is a terrible sport, and whenever they lose, it is somebody else’s fault. The way she acted when she got tossed out, dropping F-bombs at fans, just proved my feelings about her were correct. She had a beef, and some would say a legitimate complaint, but she still acted like a two-year-old.

Thumbs up to the Minnesota Wild on inking Karil Kaprizov to an eight year extension at 17 million dollars a year. You can’t say the Wild aren’t trying to win. I just hope they didn’t pay too much for that long. We all know what happened with Parise and Suter’s contracts and how bad that hurt the Wild.

Thumbs down to the Minnesota Twins. Firing Rocco Baldelli after they were in the hunt and then traded 40 percent of the roster????? Are you serious? The Pohlads need to sell the team ASAP.

Thumbs up to the New York Mets on spending ONE BILLION DOLLARS in the offseason and still didn’t make the playoffs!!! The thumbs up is to show just because you spend money, doesn’t guaruntee you will win. Although it is working well for the Dodgers, Yankees and Red Sox.

Sports work in mysterious ways. This year is the 25th anniversary of the legendary Les Drechsel’s passing. This will be the first year Crookston and Red Lake County (Red Lake Falls and RLCC) have played each other in football in recent history. If you don’t recall, Drex was a hall of fame football coach and A.D. at Crookston High School, where he won a state championship in 1980. After retirement from Crookston after the 1991 season (I still remember when I found out he was retiring. He came into the locker room – the old CHS boys locker room in the basement of the old Central High School gymnasium and told our freshmen football team that he was retiring and boys were crying because we wanted to play for Drex. You don’t get freshmen boys that emotional over many things). After retiring, there was an opening at Red Lake Falls, and Drex decided to take the head coaching job at Red Lake Falls. I still remember having Drex at Coach’s Corner on KROX talking Red Lake Falls football each Saturday morning. He coached current head Coach Brian Remick who took over the reigns when Drex retired again.
So it is kind of a full-circle moment. While the game won’t be one for the ages as Red Lake County is the HEAVY-HEAVY favorite to win the game and likely running time. But it will be fun to see the two teams battle 25 years after the passing of the man, the myth, the legend……Drex…..fittingly at L.E. Drechsel Field in Red Lake Falls. I just might wear a baseball cap to see if anybody flips it off my head like Drex always did when I was little.

Congratulations to Red Lake Falls’ Shandi Nelson on recording the 1,000th kill of her career in a big 3-2 victory over BGMR on Monday evening. It was a great high school volleyball match with RLF beating BGMR 16-14 in set five. Shandi was also crowned homecoming queen!

Congratulations to Warroad Girls Hockey’s Reagan Haley on committing to play hockey at Frankline Pierce. The defenseman had 33 points over the last two seasons.

SECTION 8A VOLLEYBALL

Section 8A Volleyball is starting to see a slight separation between the top and the bottom. Sacred Heart is still at the top of the standings with a solid 23-1 record. The only loss was to Ada-Borup 3-1 early in the season, but they have 3-0 or 2-0 wins over Fertile-Beltrami, Red Lake Falls, and Climax-Fisher and 3-1 wins over KCC and BGMR.
Ada-Borup-West plays the toughest schedule in 8A volleyball and is 13-6 on the year. They are 6-0 in section play. Their losses are to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Nevis, a 3-1 loss to #1 ranked in AA Hawley. They also lost to #1 in Class A, Minneota 2-0, #4 in Class A, Russel-Tyler-Ruthton 2-0, and #6 in Class A, Mabel-Canton 2-0. Five of their losses are to ranked teams.  And all the matches were close.  They already beat Sacred Heart 3-1 and if they win all their matches at the Alexandria tournament this weekend and finish by beating Climax-Fisher and Park Christian, they could possibly be the top seed.  They have the tiebreaker with Sacred Heart, so it will be interesting to see if they are within the tie-breaker margin at the end of the regular season.

Fertile-Beltrami is fighting for the third seed. They lost to Sacred Heart 3-0 and 2-0 and to Ada-Borup-West 3-1 in a tight match. Next weekend, they have matches against Lake-Park-Audubon, Climax-Fisher, Mahnomen-Waubun, RLCC, Fosston, and the Goodridge/Grygla tournament. If they finish strong, they should be able to lock the third seed.

The final two weeks of the regular season will be interesting as we see who will be the fourth seed with five teams fighting for the spot. KCC is leading, but Red Lake Falls, BGMR, Climax-Fisher, and Blackduck are all trying to catch them.
KCC has the tie-breaker with RLF after a 3-2 victory on September 18. KCC has a big match coming up at BGMR on October 7, and this weekend, they will be at the Perham tournament with some decent competition. If they do well there and beat BGMR, they will be assured of being the fourth seed.

Red Lake Falls looks like it might have the fifth seed locked up with a 2-1 win over Climax-Fisher and a 3-2 win over BGMR. However, they lost to KCC 3-2, which will prevent them from moving ahead of KCC for the fourth seed.

Climax-Fisher has three matches left and will likely go 1-2 with Win-E-Mac, Fertile-Beltrami, and Ada-Borup-West. Blackduck is right behind them, has four matches left, and will likely go 4-0 or 3-1.  I am guessing Blackduck will move ahead of Climax-Fisher in the standings and would have a better section record for the tie-breaker.

Again, this is all for entertainment purposes, and things can change a lot between now and the end of the season, but it is fun to try to figure out.

SECTION 8AA VOLLEYBALL

The Hawley Nuggets will undoubtedly be the top seed in the section tournament. They are the real deal, and what else can you say? There is a fight for the second seed between DGF and Roseau. The two teams haven’t played and won’t play head-to-head, so if they are within the tie-breaker, it all depends on what happens in the final two weeks of the season. Roseau has two matches with section opponents and should win both, and if they do that, they might have a chance, but they will have to cheer for East Grand Forks when they play DGF to get a win, which would help them move up. It is simple: if DGF wins the rest of their matches, they will be the second seed.
Frazee, Perham, East Grand Forks, and Wadena-Deer Creek are all fighting for the fourth seed. An EGF win over DGF would give them a big boost. Frazee also plays DGF, and a win for Frazee would give them a big boost. Some teams are also in tournaments the next two weekends, so there could be a lot of change.

The top two teams will get first-round byes in the tournament.

SECTION 8 9-PLAYER FOOTBALL

The season is winding down and it looks like KCC is going to be the top seed unless they get upset in the final two games. Stephen-Argyle has the second seed locked up. Goodridge-Grgyla has to be the best 3-2 team in the state. They lost to Stephen-Argyle 6-0 in a great game and the next week lost to KCC 28-24 in another great game. Both games were on the road. They will have an important game coming up on October 10 when they travel to take on the Northern Freeze. Whoever wins that game would be the third seed in the tournament. So that will be a big game for both teams. What is the difference between being the third or fourth seed?  If you go to KCC or go to Stephen-Argyle in the semi-finals!  So pick your poison.

SECTION 6 9-PLAYER FOOTBALL

Here comes Fertile-Beltrami, who are starting to play some Sectio 6 9-man games. They have taken over the top spot in the section after last week’s win. Fertile-Beltrami lost to Stephen-Argyle 50-30 in week one and lost to Goodridge-Grygal by two points. That is their only loss in over two years.

Fertile-Beltrami has Hacock and NCE/UH and should be able to win both of those games before they will likely have the battle for the top seed when they travel to Clearbrook-Gonvick on October 15 to wrap up the regular season.

Clearbrook-Gonvick has a tough end-of-season schedule. They lost to KCC 21-8 last week, take on Ortonville this week, and then end the season with Fosston and Fertile-Beltrami. If Clearbrook-Gonvick wins out, they would be the top seed.

Fosston is fighting for the second seed when they play Clearbrook-Gonvick next week. But, if they beat Clearbrook-Gonvick and the Bears then beat Fertile-Beltrami things will get wild!

SECTION 8A FOOTBALL

Mahnomen-Waubun pretty much sealed the top seed with a victory over Red Lake County last week. Once again, the Thunderbirds will be the top seed for the postseason. Red Lake County and Park Christian are battling for the second seed.
The teams will play on October 10 at Oklee, and the winner of that game should be the second seed. RLC also hosts Crookston this weekend, and they should win pretty easily. They will end the season at Polk County West on October 15. Simple: if RLC wins out, they are the second seed.

Park Christian has some tough opponents left in the final three weeks: Nevis, RLC, and Bagley. If they win the last three games, they will be the second seed. If they lose to RLC and beat Bagley, they will be the third seed. If they lose to RLC and Bagley, they will drop down to the fourth seed.

The rest of the seeds look to be set as Ada-Borup-West will be the fifth, Polk County West  will be the sixth seed, Cass Lake-Bena will be seventh, and Red Lake will be eighth.

SECTION 8AA FOOTBALL
Barnesville is on its way to being the top seed again this year and is 3-0 in section play. Pelican Rapids has one fewer win than Frazee, but due to the strength of its schedule, is ahead of them in the standings.
Pelican Rapids beat Thief River Falls and East Grand Forks, which has given them some extra points. They lost to Hawley (Hawley’s only win so far), Barnesville, and Park Rapids.
Pelican Rapids has Roseau, Warroad, and Staples-Motley left to play.
Frazee plays Wadena-Deer Creek, Lake Park-Audubon, and Otter Tail Central and it is possible that they go 3-0 the rest of the way and not be the second seed.

Warroad looks like they could make a run at the third spot. They beat Hawley so they have the tie-breaker with them, but they could pass Frazee if they win out, or even win two of three. They play Park Rapids, Pelican Rapids, and Barnesville.

It looks like Roseau will be the seventh seed unless they get a win. Crookston will get the sixth seed by default with wins over Cass Lake-Bena and Red Lake.

SECTION 8AAA FOOTBALL

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton is in the driver’s seat, and if they win out, they will be the top seed. On paper, the toughest game will be against Barnesville.
Minnewaska Area and Perham will battle for the second seed, and Minnewaska looks to be in the driver’s seat as of today. The teams don’t play each other, so there won’t be a head-to-head tie-breaker. Perham is ahead of EGF and beat them, so they have the tie-breaker there. The worst I could see Perham going is the third seed.

EGF seems to have the fourth seed locked up as long as they beat TRF this week. If they do that, they will be the fourth seed. If TRF beats EGF, they could be the fourth seed, but the Prowlers would have to beat Park Rapids too. After DGF, the rest of the six teams are all 2-3!!!

There are a lot of big games coming up and the seeds will likely go down to the final week of play.

SECTION 8A BOYS SOCCER

It looks like Pelican Rapids will be the top seed, but I am not sure on that yet.  Pelican Rapids and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy tied in their only meeting and Hillcrest will likely have a better section and overall record.  So stay tuned.  Also, Minnewaska Area beat Hillcrest Lutheran 3-2 in their only meeting!!!  1-3 seeds are still up in the air and we likely won’t know until the seeds come out on October 5!

Crookston will be the fourth seed after they beat EGF for the second time on Tuesday evening. East Grand Forks and Morris are close in the standings, but EGF has a better section and overall record so I am thinking Crookston will host EGF on Tuesday in the first round.

— — —

SECTION 8A GIRLS SOCCER
East Grand Forks has the top seed in the North locked up and will get a first round bye. The second seed isn’t that easy. Walker-H-A and Hillcrest Lutheran are virtually tied in QRF. They also split the two games they played during the regular season. It looks like WHA will get the second seed because they have a better Section and Overall record. Pelican Rapids will be the fourth seed and Crookston will be the fifth seed.

JOKES

A guy was on trial for murder and if convicted, would get the electric chair. His brother found out that a redneck was on the jury and figured he would be the one to bribe. He told the redneck that he would be paid $10,000 if he could convince the rest of the jury to reduce the charge to manslaughter.
The jury was out an entire week and returned with a verdict of manslaughter.
After the trial, the brother went to the redneck’s home, told him what a great job he had done and paid him the $10,000.
The redneck replied that it wasn’t easy to convince the rest of the jury to change the charge to manslaughter. They all wanted to let him go.

A man was walking along the street when he saw a ladder going into the clouds. As any of us would do, he climbed the ladder. He reached a cloud, upon which sat a rather plump and very ugly woman. “Screw me or climb the ladder to success,” she said.
No contest, thought the man, so he climbed the ladder to the next cloud. On this cloud was a slightly thinner woman, who was slightly easier on the eye. “Screw me hard or climb the ladder to success,” she said. “Well,” thought the man, “might as well carry on.”
On the next cloud was an even more attractive lady who, this time, was quite attractive. “Screw me now or climb the ladder to success,” she uttered. As he turned her down and went on up the ladder, the man thought to himself that this was getting better the further he went.
On the next cloud was an absolute beauty. Slim, attractive, the lot. “Screw me here and now or climb the ladder to success,” she flirted. Unable to imagine what could be waiting, and being a gambling man, he decided to climb again. When he reached the next cloud, there was a 400 pound ugly man, arm pit hair showing, flies buzzing around his head.
“Who are you?” the man asked.
“Hello” said the ugly fat man, “I’m Cess!”

‘We need a fourth for poker,’ said the friend.
‘I’ll be right over,’ whispered the doctor.

‘Oh yes, quite serious,’ said the doctor gravely. ‘In fact, there are three doctors there already!’

“That’s great,” said his uncle. “Do you know how to play it?”

“Oh, I don’t play it,” the little fellow said. “My mom gives me a dollar a day not to play it during the day and my dad gives me five dollars a week not to play it at night.

A professor of chemistry wanted to teach his 5th grade class a lesson about the evils of liquor, so he produced an experiment that involved a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms.
“Now, class, closely observe the worms,” said the professor while putting a worm into the water.
The worm in the water writhed about, happy as a worm in water could be. He then put the second worm into the whiskey. It curled up and writhed about painfully, then quickly sank to the bottom, dead as a doornail.
“Now, what lesson can we learn from this experiment?” the professor asked.

Johnny, who naturally sits in back, raised his hand and wisely, responded confidently, “Drink whiskey and you won’t get worms.”
